LA Lakers To Trade Pau Gasol?

According to multiple reports, the Los Angeles Lakers are on the verge of trading All-Star power forward Pau Gasol, something the team has been working to do since before the start of the 2011-12 NBA season.

The team actually traded him once already, a deal that would have sent him to Houston and landed Chris Paul in LA as part of a three-team deal with the Houston Rockets and New Orleans Hornets. That trade was nixed by NBA Commissioner David Stern, who is also currently the named owner of the Hornets.

Since then the Lakers have continued to work the phones to gauge interest in Gasol, and now it sounds like a trade is imminent.

Yahoo’s Adrian Wojnarowski tweeted this afternoon that the Houston Rockets were the ones possibly acquiring Gasol, though which pieces were involved was still very much up in the air. Roland Lazenby corroborated the trade, saying it was imminent, but he didn’t know which team was getting Gasol from the Lakers.

Houston’s interest has been consistent and ongoing. They would like to send Luis Scola and other pieces to LA, though they have been unwilling to part with the Lakers’ first choice: point guard Kyle Lowry. The Rockets previously discussed sending Kevin Martin to LA, but the Lakers weren’t thrilled with that idea, given Kobe Bryant’s presence.

The Minnesota Timberwolves have also expressed interest in Gasol, but walked away from the table when the Lakers wanted Kevin Love back in the deal. Derrick Williams and Luke Ridnour have been of interest to the Lakers, and LA is also interested in Michael Beasley. Something could still happen there, even if the Wolves are a third team involved in the deal.

The Boston Celtics have also had discussions with the Lakers regarding a possible Rajon Rondo swap involving Pau Gasol, but those talks didn’t seem to advance too far into the process.

The Golden State Warriors have also had some level of discussion with the Lakers, according to HOOPSWORLD’s Eric Pincus, but the Lakers were interested in Steph Curry, and the Warriors are not ready to make that move.

The Atlanta Hawks could also get into the mix, with Josh Smith reportedly asking for a trade, but the Hawks can’t afford to pay Gasol unless something else significant goes back to LA.

Stay tuned as we continue to monitor this story . . .
