St. John’s men’s basketball coach Steve Lavin made a surprise return to the bench in Wednesday’s game against Lehigh.

Lavin, who underwent surgery for prostate cancer on Oct. 6, made a dramatic appearance by walking out onto the floor at Carnesecca Arena while students started to chant his name.

He made his first appearance at a team practice Tuesday but gave no indication he would be back on the bench Wednesday night, saying there was no timetable for his return.

Assistant coach Mike Dunlap coached the Red Storm in Monday’s season-opening victory over William & Mary.

St. John’s improved to 2-0 Wednesday with a 78-73 victory over Lehigh in the 2K Sports Classic.

Lavin, a former coach at UCLA and analyst at ESPN, guided St. John’s to a 21-12 record and NCAA appearance last season.
