The Denver Nuggets will have some key help on Sunday as they attempt to strengthen their hold on the third seed in the Western Conference playoff race. Nuggets coach George Karl announced that point guard Ty Lawson will return to the starting lineup Sunday evening as his team faces the Portland Trail Blazers.
In an additional welcome piece of news for Karl’s Nuggets, Blazers head coach Terry Stotts told reporters that All-Star forward LaMarcus Aldridge will sit out with a sore right ankle. Rookie center Meyers Leonard will start in his place, with regular starting center J.J. Hickson moving to power forward.
Lawson sat out eight of the Nuggets’ last nine games with a heel injury, but returned to the court in a bench role on Friday in Denver’s 108-105 loss to the Dallas Mavericks. Sunday will mark his first start since the injury.
Aldridge has missed four games in late March and early April as he’s battled ankle problems, although he returned to the starting lineup last friday to face the Houston Rockets. Fellow starters Nicolas Batum and Wesley Matthews are also out for the Blazers.
The Nuggets have the chance to win their 22nd consecutive home game to improve on their 36-3 record at the Pepsi Center, the best home record in the league. The Trail Blazers have lost their last 10 games, and will look to avoid tying a franchise record with 11 straight losses.
