Welcome back to the weekly college basketball mailbag, which will cover a topic we never expected to write about — TCU’s upset of No. 5 Kansas. (What?!)
Our college basketball reporters Nicole Auerbach and Eric Prisbell will also discuss the best conference in the country, the lack of star power in the game and some individual team resumes.
Before we dig in, just a reminder to send them questions for next week’s mailbag on Twitter to @NicoleAuerbach and @EricPrisbell.
Let’s begin:
@corybrenneman: In light of the abhorrent Kansas-TCU 1H last night, what’s the worst half of basketball you’ve ever witnessed?
Auerbach: In person? Whenever I think of painful basketball, I immediately think of Georgetown-Tennessee from earlier this season. I think it was 18-16 Tennessee at halftime, and the final was 37-36 with neither team scoring in the game’s final four minutes. Both halves were brutal and slooooooow. Georgetown didn’t score a field goal in the final 10 minutes of the first half, allowing Tennessee to go on a 7-0 run (that hardly felt like a run) and take that halftime lead. Eric was at last night’s game so he will probably say that one, but mine would have to be one of the worst halves I’ve seen by both teams combined. The interesting thing is that both teams continued to have low-scoring games throughout the season…but I still don’t believe any of their games featured both teams struggling so much at the same time.
Prisbell: Last night’s first half performance by Kansas was an abomination. No other way to spin it. That was the worst shooting effort I have ever witnessed at the Division I level. Kansas made 3 of 22 shots, but as Bill Self told me, “We had three assists on those baskets!” The other unsightly half that comes to mind was during the BCS national title game media hoops game in January of 2008 in New Orleans. Everyone had stayed up really late the night before, you know, eating good, fatty foods — the New Orleans meals that come with a free angioplasty — and drinking lots of soft drinks. … [For more on Mailbag: Kansas disaster, Big Ten's best teams and more, click here.]
