We didn’t plan on writing another post about Marshall Henderson, but when the biggest star of the NCAA tournament gets into a Twitter war with a fake account he thought belonged to a rival Kentucky player, things change.

The account @12harrow does not belong to Kentucky sophomore Ryan Harrow. Henderson, a star Ole Miss guard, appeared not to know that. So when @12harrow began peppering Henderson’s @nativeflash22 account with insults after the Rebels’ upset win against Wisconsin on Thursday, Henderson believed it was really coming from Harrow.

Fake Harrow’s first tweet:

The fake Harrow didn’t stop. He told Henderson to get to a Final Four before talking so big and reminded Henderson about Kentucky’s 87-74 win against Ole Miss earlier this season.

Henderson promptly responded with a profane, over-the-top comeback:

Let that be a lesson to all those who want to step to a boss.

Henderson’s replies remained on his Twitter page for approximately 45 minutes before being removed. We grabbed a screenshot of them in anticipation of their removal. Issuing vague online threats to people real or imagined is generally frowned upon.

The Courier-Journal’s Kentucky beat reporter, Kyle Tucker, quickly pointed out the Harrow account was a fraud.

But, we wondered, how did a fake Ryan Harrow account, one that seems like it could reasonably belong to a Kentucky freshman, get 23,000 followers in the first place? Having a following that big gives instant legitimacy to a fake account. It’s not hard to see why Henderson would have been duped.

Apparently, injured Kentucky freshman Nerlens Noel once retweeted something from the fake Harrow account without realizing it was a hoax. That helped the fake Harrow account gain legitimacy.

The Harrow page has been confirmed as a fake by Kentucky’s sports information director.

As of 6 p.m. on Friday, the real Ryan Harrow has just one post on his actual Twitter account. It’s from January and had nothing to do with Marshall Henderson.
