Mavs GM: ‘We haven’t gone backward’
Mavericks general manager Donnie Nelson joined Galloway and Co. on 103.3 KESN-FM to discuss the Mavericks’ offseason moves. Here are some highlights:
On why they allowed Tyson Chandler, Caron Butler and J.J. Bare to leave:
You can’t have your cake and eat it, too. If you want to re-sign those guys, then you’re not going to have a chance at the big boys this summer. So if we want to continue to do special things, kind of like we did last year, you’ve got to be in play with those opportunities. We certainly haven’t taken a step back. We feel like we have the firepower in a different way. We probably need to bolster the frontcourt a little bit, but we’ve got one of the most versatile front lines in the league, we felt really good about Brendan Haywood being our starting center [last year] until Tyson just had a special year. We don’t have Tyson, but I think that we haven’t gone backward.”
