Memphis Coach Questions McMillan Firing

The Portland Trail Blazers became the fourth NBA team to change head coaches this season when they fired Nate McMillan on March 15.

Count Grizzlies coach Lionel Hollins among the people who believe the decision might have been a mistake.

“It’s disappointing because I thought he had done a good job,” Hollins said Thursday night before the Griz took on the Blazers in the Rose Garden.

“But I could see it coming. Once the public statements by (guard) Raymond Felton were made, something had to give and usually it’s the coach that’s giving; that’s sacrificed.”

“I don’t know what all of their issues were,” Hollins said of the McMillan situation. “But sometimes when you start bringing in veteran players who haven’t been groomed in the way that Nate groomed LaMarcus Aldridge and other young guys, veterans tend to want to do it their way. It’s a different mentality. It’s a tough deal when you start bringing in guys from the outside to a young nucleus.”
