So the superstition goes: Bad news comes in threes.
For the Miami (Fla.) men’s basketball program, the first two bits of bad news were two tough losses — the first, a 69-50 thrashing at the hands of Arizona, and the second, an overtime loss to Indiana State.
The third piece of bad news will last a bit longer. The school announced Sunday night that senior center Reggie Johnson will miss 6-8 weeks because of a left thumb fracture. That time frame will mean the ‘Canes will play most of their ACC season without their third leading scorer and top rebounder.
Johnson missed Miami’s last three games after injuring himself in practice before the Diamond Head Classic in Honolulu, according to the South Florida Sun-Sentinel; the Hurricanes went 1-2 in his absence.
In the seven games he’s played this season, Johnson averaged 12.6 points, 10.1 rebounds and 1.9 blocks a game. He is shooting 42.6 percent from the field and 71.4 percent at the line.
If his rehab goes according to plan, it looks like there’s a chance Johnson could return for Miami’s game against Florida State on Feb. 13. He should definitely be back for the ‘Canes’ biggest game down the stretch, a March 2 date with Duke.
Miami (8-3) returns to action against La Salle on Wednesday night.
