Michigan point guard Trey Burke wore some eye-catching new basketball shoes at Monday’s news conference that the Wolverines will debut for Tuesday’s big matchup with Ohio State at the Crisler Center.
The shoes, which are almost blindingly maize, are part of Michigan’s “bleed-out” uniform that will be almost entirely maize. The uniform color scheme is part of the school’s “maize-out” effort, in which fans who attend the game are being asked to wear maize-colored clothes.
It will be the first time Michigan’s basketball team wears a “bleed-out” uniform.
On his radio show, Michigan coach John Beilein briefly addressed the all maize jersey-and-shoes combination.
“They brought us some shoes earlier in the year and they had a green tint to them,” he said. “They were yellowish color … so we said no. They brought back these beautiful shoes, and our kids are (excited), that are truly a bright maize. They’re excited to wear them.”
Was this Beilein’s idea to wear them Tuesday?
“I do very little of that area,” he said. “The players, the captains, (equipment manager) Bob Bland, Adidas, our assistant coaches, (director of basketball operations) Travis Conlan. I’ve got enough on my plate (to avoid) where the fashion goes.”
