McDermott not the best in MVC?
by Scott M Gleeson, USA TODAY Sports
USA TODAY Sports caught up with player of the year candidate Doug McDermott for its weekly Mid-Major Player Diary.
Doug McDermott’s biggest problem is that he’s too humble. He’s arguably the best college basketball player in the country, and if Cody Zeller doesn’t play up to expectations this season, he likely earns that title. But McDermott has trouble conceding he’s even the best player in the Missouri Valley Conference. Yes, you read that right.
When asked about the strength of the Missouri Valley Conference and an under-the-radar player who demands national attention, McDermott provided a “no-brainer” answer.
“Colt Ryan of Evansville hands down. He’s (Evansville’s) go-to guy, he just does everything as a scorer. He can shoot the crap out of the ball. He dropped 43 points on us last year. (Pause). And no, I wasn’t guarding him.”
And on the depth of the Missouri Valley Conference this season, McDermott is campaigning for more NCAA bids than previous seasons:
“I think the Valley is stronger than it’s been in a while. I think three or four teams will get into the NCAA tournament this year and that’s how it should be. We have a very balanced league. Illinois State and Northern Iowa bring almost everyone back, you can’t ever count out Wichita State, and Evansville is a team that could sneak up on everyone.”
