Mike James ‘Shocked’ to Hear Name Called
Several times against lesser teams, Rose’s absence because of toe and back injuries has been easily overlooked. Other times, like in the second quarter and second half Thursday against the Celtics at the United Center, it is glaring.
Then Mike James checked into the game.
The third-string point guard, who was playing in the D-League at this time last week, twice rescued the Bulls during their 89-80 victory against the Celtics.
James wasn’t the only hero — just the most unlikely.
“[James] brought toughness to our team,” Luol Deng said.
“I was shocked when Coach called my name,” James said. “He said it maybe four or five times. I had to make him say it one more time just to be sure. But it’s about being ready, about being prepared. When your number is called, you have to contribute however you possibly can.”
