Minnesota Golden Gophers forward Trevor Mbakwe is debating leaving the program for the NBA, despite being granted a sixth year of eligibility. Minnesota must find an open scholarship for Mbakwe if he wants to return after missing most of 2011-12 season after tearing his ACL in November. The 6-foot-8 forward averaged 14 points in seven games with the Golden Gophers this season.”I’m sure if the NCAA is willing to give someone a sixth year, they’re probably willing to work with us along those lines as far as scholarships are concerned,” Minnesota coach Tubby Smith told reporters. “We expect everybody back that’s in our program this year to be back next year.”Minnesota plays Washington in the NIT semifinals Tuesday.
