Minnesota Timberwolves point guard Ricky Rubio won’t be making his highly-anticipated season debut tonight against Denver, but it won’t be long before he’s back.

Rubio, who has gone from a Spanish teen sensation who turned heads while facing Team USA in the 2008 Olympics to becoming one of the NBA’s most exciting young players, has been out since tearing his ACL and MCL on March 9. While a Timberwolves official said Rubio continues to reassess his situation daily, his return will most likely come in Saturday’s home game against Dallas rather than Friday’s road game at New Orleans.

The T-Wolves (9-9) have managed to stay in playoff contention not only without Rubio, but without franchise centerpiece Kevin Love. The fifth-year forward missed the first nine games of the season after breaking his right hand on Oct. 18. Veteran point guard Luke Ridnour has been handling Rubio’s lead guard duties for Minnesota, which has won four of its last six games.

But Rubio’s return will be a major boost to a team that entered the season expecting with high expectations. He was a Rookie of the Year candidate for most of last season, when Minnesota’s playoff hopes were dashed by an onslaught of injuries that included Rubio’s ill-fated collision with the Lakers’ Kobe Bryant.
