The NBA announced Thursday the participants in All-Star Saturday festivities. The competitors will be playing for points Feb. 16, when the events take place. Eastern Conference captain Dwyane Wade of the Miami Heat and Western Conference captain Chris Paul of the Los Angeles Clippers had a role in selecting the teams.
This is the first time the NBA has tried an overall points competition between the conferences.
Perhaps because of the captains or the competitive twist, the selections veer from the traditional big names, instead opting for more specialized players. Here’s the full list:
Slam dunk contest
In which players showcase creativity with dunks.
Three-point contest
In which players make three-pointers from five different spots around the arc.
Skills challenge
In which players dribble around obstacles, make tricky passes and end with a layup.
Shooting stars contest
In which one NBA player, one NBA legend and one WNBA player trade shots from different spots on the court, going for speed.
