With the Conference Finals in full swing the secondary news this time of year is typically centered around the upcoming draft and the free agent market, but this season has led to plenty of coaching vacancies and there are some top quality candidates on the market.
There are currently six Eastern Conference franchises in the market for a new sideline general, three of those teams made the playoffs in 2013.
Let’s take a look at how the coaching market is shaping up for teams without a signed head coach for next season.
Note Phil Jackson and Stan Van Gundy have publicly stated they are not pursuing a coaching vacancy at this time.
2012-13 Record: 49-33, second place Atlantic Division
The Nets fired Avery Johnson after 28 games this season then elected not to give the keys to the franchise to interim head coach P.J. Carlesimo. According to reports, the Nets reached out to Phil Jackson in early May but the 11-time NBA champion coach turned down a return to the sidelines and is instead looking to secure a front office role.
The Nets are rumored to have interest in Indiana Pacers assistant coach Brian Shaw, but his team is currently in the Eastern Conference Finals. Memphis’ head coach Lionel Hollins has also drawn interest, but is in the same situation as Shaw (but in Western Conference).
Former league coaches Larry Brown, Scott Skiles and Jerry Sloan have also had their name included in the speculative bucket over the past month.
2012-13 Record: 44-38, second place Southeast Division
The Hawks have not ruled out re-signing Larry Drew to a new deal but have also given the coach a blessing to find outside employment.
The team has reportedly interviewed three candidates so far; Spurs assistant Mike Budenholzer, Nate McMillan and Stan Van Gundy.
President of basketball operations Danny Ferry has been rumored to also have interest in former Duke teammate Quin Snyder, who is currently coaching overseas and Euroleague veteran Ettore Messina.
2012-13 Record: 38-44, third place Central Division
The Bucks have interviewed Atlanta’s Larry Drew and veteran coach Jerry Sloan, who later removed himself from consideration.
There are reports indicating the Bucks are waiting until Memphis’ season is over to talk with Hollins who may not be asked to return next season by the club’s new front office regime. Hollins once served as an assistant coach in Milwaukee under Scott Skiles before heading to Memphis.
Los Angeles Lakers assistant Steve Clifford is another name to watch as Milwaukee’s search plays itself out.
2012-13 Record: 34-48, fourth place Atlantic Division
With former head coach Doug Collins transitioning into a consulting role with the team, the Sixers aren’t in a rush to make a quick hire and vow to remain patient for the right coach.
All-Star guard Jrue Holiday has publicly stated he would like assistant head coach Michael Curry to get a strong look from management during the process. Houston Rockets assistant coach Kelvin Sampson’s name was also mentioned early in the process.
2012-13 Record: 29-53, fourth place Central Division
The Pistons are back in a familiar position, working the coaching wire. The team has had eight different coaches since 2000. The team is working Phil Jackson, serving as an advisor, during the hiring process. The Pistons are looking to have a coach in place by July 1 according to reports.
Oklahoma City assistant coach Maurice (Mo) Cheeks has reportedly been interviewed for the vacancy. Nate McMillan is also rumored to have interviewed with the Pistons over the past month.
With Jackson involved in the process, the common belief is Pacers assistant Brian Shaw will get a strong look before a final decision is made. Shaw played for Jackson and also served as an assistant on his coaching staff.
2012-13 Record: 21-61, fourth place Southeast Division
Team owner Michael Jordan is in the process of trying to change the perception of the team in the local community and the next head coach will be a huge part of this process.
The Bobcats fired Mike Dunlap after one season after the coach tripled the franchise’s victory total over the prior campaign. The club also submitted paperwork to change its name to the Hornets.
Lakers assistant Steve Clifford has interviewed with the team, while Rockets assistant Kelvin Sampson has also discussed the vacancy with the franchise. Jazz assistant Jeff Hornacek and former league assistant Quin Snyder have also received interest from the team during the process.
Former Suns head coach Alvin Gentry also received an interview in early May.
Carmelo Anthony Has Shoulder Injury, No Surgery Required
New York Knicks star forward Carmelo Anthony struggled to find his shooting stroke during the playoffs finishing at 41 percent from the floor, down from 45 percent during the regular season. Anthony’s accuracy behind the three-point line also suffered during the playoffs dipping from 38 percent to 29 percent.
But there may be an underlying reason for Anthony’s slippage.
According to USA Today’s Sam Amick, Anthony suffered a small tear in his left shoulder in an April 14 clash versus the Indiana Pacer.
The injury won’t require surgery and the expected recovery time is three to four weeks.
Although his stat line remained gaudy (28.8 points, 6.6 rebounds), Anthony’s struggles on the offensive end of the floor during the postseason was one of the main reasons the Knicks were sent home by the Indiana in the Eastern Conference Semifinals.
The fact the injury won’t require surgery is positive news for the Knicks who suffered numerous injuries to their lineup in the race leading to the postseason.
