The Kings and Virginia Beach:  Yesterday news broke of a possible deal for the Sacramento Kings that would have them relocating to Virginia Beach on the east coast.

Before we get too far along on this, everyone involved has now since denied the initial story, which painted the situation as all but done, mapping out a chain of events that would start with a Tuesday council meeting in which Comcast-Spectacor (the former owners of the 76ers) and LiveNation (a concert and event promoter) would present plans for a state of the art arena that would come with a “guarantee” of a professional sports team as the primary tenant. That tenant was reported to be the Kings.

Since that story broke, most of the parties involved were quick to point out that the Kings were never mentioned specifically to them, and that many of the details that were said to have been agreed to, such as how this venue would be funded, have not been discussed.

For the Kings part they released a statement saying, they would not comment on rumors and they have been contacted by a number of situations.

“The Kings organization over the last several years has been approached by numerous parties and cities interested in buying and relocating the franchise. The franchise is not going to discuss which cities have approached the organization and are not going to comment on every rumor.”

The initial report suggested that the Kings would be in Virginia Beach next week; however, they are denying that they will be part of anything.

Sources close to this situation continue to say that the Kings are exploring their options, but that Virginia Beach isn’t any further along than other options under consideration.

It will be interesting to see how this thing plays out, as Comcast-Spectaor isn’t a joke of an organization and after pocketing several hundred million divesting large portions of their stake in the 76ers, there is real money behind this id.

The meetings on this proposal are expected to take place on Tuesday, so you can bet there will be a lot more media attention on that meeting than originally expected.

Just Piling On:  One of the stories that captivated the NBA landscape in the doldrums of the August was the idea that Nike’s new LeBron X shoe would enter the marketplace with a whopping $300 price tag. This simply is not accurate information.

While there will be a Nike LeBron shoe priced near $300, it is not the shoe Nike is hoping everyone will buy. The commercially released shoe is expected to street with a much more expected $180 price tag.

As I covered in my chat yesterday, the LeBron X shoe that’s caused the buzz isn’t a normal shoe. It’s going to feature Nike’s + technology.

The Nike+ tech is part of a new revolution in the shoe business were sensors are being inserted into the products to help the user retrieve data about how they perform. It’s this Nike+ tech that’s driving up the cost of the shoe and will only be available in very limited quantities.

The idea behind the tech is pretty revolutionary so of course they want to pair it with their hottest basketball star, but to put it out that the LeBron X is going to be $300 is not an accurate assessment of the situation. A better way to say it, is that the $180 style will have a limited version equipped with Nike+ that will go for $290, but that isn’t nearly as sensational is it?

Throughout the story people have pointed to LeBron as though he has some say in how Nike prices its products, including the products with his name on them. That’s not how it works; especially not for LeBron.

LeBron’s deal with Nike is a flat endorsement deal. They pay him a fixed rate and then try and use his brand to sell more product than they are paying him.

To blame LeBron for the price of his signature shoe is simply piling on, and it’s clear that in how this story was covered, that’s exactly what this was and that’s a shame.

IN RELATED  As if we didn’t have enough gadgets in our world, the shoe companies want to put some in your shoes or in your worn apparel.

As we covered above Nike has a product line called Nike+. Adidias has miCoach. They all basically do the same thing. They allow the user to measure themselves based on how they perform using the product.

How far did you run? How high did you jump? How did that compare to the last time you ran or jumped? How does that compare to your friends? How does that compare to your favorite athlete?

You simply attach a “doggle” adapter to your smart device and launch the app and the shoes synch with the device and now you have advanced metrics on how you train or how you play the game.

Think about this in the context of the NBA Game. Imagine if there was a sensor in players shoes or built into their jersey. Imagine if this sensor could measure how hard a player was playing or help coaches understand in-game fatigue and drop off. What if they could use this information to develop substitution patterns?

Think about what this kind of information could do to the media view of the game. What if you could see how fast a player was running on a fast break play? How high did that guy jump on a dunk? Did that guy really take a charge or was it a flop?

The sports world loves advanced analytics – we scour combine results during the NBA draft trying to glean nuggets of differentiation. Imagine if you could truly compare foot speed of players based on hyper accurate data from the shoes they wear?

The use for this stuff becomes mind-blowing, especially when you back away and look at how the data could be used.

Are you dogging it in practice? The shoes don’t lie. You say you’re not hurt, but the shoes say your performance still isn’t where it normally is.

Want to build yourself into a video game, just enter your stats into the console and there is a hype realistic version of you in the game.

This isn’t pie-in-the-sky either, there are products doing this stuff right now. There are things in the works around this tech that are making their way into college and NBA teams this year.

They say technology changes everything, and some of this tech is going to change how we measure and value sports performance.
