Around The League In 30 Trades – Pt. 3:  Last week we started looking at each team in the NBA and which roster pieces might be on the move at the NBA Trade Deadline. Last Tuesday we hit on the first ten teams and Friday we hit on the middle ten, so let’s wrap this up today with the final ten teams as the 2012 NBA Trade Deadline is just ten days away

Oklahoma City Thunder:

Who Is Likely On The Move?: Lazar Hayward, Cole Aldrich, Nazr Mohammed, Daequan Cook

The Thunder are not likely going to make a move of any kind, however historically the Thunder have been opportunistic around the trade deadline and in the off-season. If some talent shakes loose and they can get better as a result they have shown a willingness to make trades.

Sources close to the process point to Thabo Sefolosha’s tendon issue in his right foot as the situation to watch. If the Thunder feels the injury will cost Thabo more than the month of rehab and rest initially suggested they may try and flip unused or secondary parts to bring in a defensive minded guard to fill the gaps.

The Thunder are being guarded about the severity of Thabo’s injury, so if the Thunder make a deal, it might be because they know more than they are letting on.

The Thunder are highly unlikely to move any of their core pieces, so scratch James Harden off your wish list. If the Thunder do anything it likely will involve a non-core asset, but sources close to the process say the Thunder are not actively engaged in anything more than surveying the landscape.

Orlando Magic:

Who Is Likely On The Move?: Dwight Howard, Hedo Turkoglu, Jameer Nelson, J.J. Redick, Glen Davis, Jason Richardson, Chris Duhon, Quentin Richardson, Ryan Anderson, Daniel Orton, Von Wafer, Justin Harper

With ten days remaining until the trade deadline the story out of Orlando has not changed. The Magic say they are not trading Dwight Howard.

How serious they are about that stance will be tested in the next ten days. Sources close to the process say they feel like they have enough of a hold on Dwight to have better than a 50/50 chance of keeping him for at least one more year if not longer and that’s enough for them to stay the course.

If the list of players on the move above looks like the entire roster, you are right, because everyone is moveable for the right upgrade in trade.

The Magic have been linked to a number of high profile trade targets but are finding almost no interest in the assets the Magic have to trade.

The Magic have almost no shot at Steve Nash and even less of a shot at Monta Ellis. That could change in ten days, but as of today neither player is realistic for the Magic.

The Magic are working aggressively to try and shake something loose but it takes assets to make a deal and what Orlando has to offer is not overly attractive to most teams. The Magic may have to wait for someone to get a little desperate and opt to sell low.

Magic center Daniel Orton is a safe bet to be moved as he serves no role in Orlando and desperately wants a chance to play. He may not return much, but moving him even for a draft pick opens up a roster spot that could be used in a two-for-one type deal.

The Magic’s hottest trade chip might be Ryan Anderson, but more and more teams wonder how much of Ryan’s success is based on how Orlando plays. There is no doubting Ryan’s ability to shoot, but teams may not be as willing to give real players in a deal centered around Ryan if they cannot replicate his success in their system.

JJ Redick and Jameer Nelson both have trade value, but even combined neither is bringing back an A-tier talent.

The Magic are trying to make moves, however this is not a new stance for the Magic, they have been trying to make moves all season. They just need a team to want to make a deal and that may or may not happen in the next ten days.

Philadelphia 76ers:

Who Is Likely On The Move?: Craig Brackins, Andres Nocioni, Louis Williams

Before we get too far into this let me preface that the Philadelphia 76ers are unlikely to make a trade of any kind. They do have a couple of guys they would move, but their posture going into the deadline isn’t one of looking for major change.

Lou Williams is having a great year and that’s going to put the 76ers in a tough spot this summer. Lou has an Early Termination Option in his deal and scheduled to earn $5.35 million next season. It’s a safe bet that Lou is hitting unrestricted free agency and that puts Philly in the spot of having to either overpay to keep him or to move him before the deadline.

The 76ers continue to say moving Lou Williams is not in the plan, but there is risk if they don’t.

The 76ers have a two game hold on the Atlantic Division but have lost seven of their last ten games. Boston is closing the gap pretty quickly which puts Philadelphia on the clock.

The 76ers did not pick up the final option year on Craig Brackins so he is a trade chip and the team would love to get out of Andres Nocioni’s deal, although the final $7.5 million on his pact is a team option, so in essence he is a $6.5 million ending contract.

The 76ers have been mentioned in a lot of scenarios involving Andre Iguodala; however the 76ers keep saying they won’t move Iggy.

The 76ers have five games remaining before the trade deadline. If the downward trend continues there is a real chance the 76ers get active in the trade market. If they turn things around there is a chance they sit things out.

The 76ers have trade chips, the question is will they use them.

Phoenix Suns:

Who Is Likely On The Move?: Steve Nash, Josh Childress, Channing Frye, Hakim Warrick, Robin Lopez, Shannon Brown

Before we get too far on the Phoenix Suns, let’s get the Steve Nash story out of the way.

The Suns say unless Steve Nash asks to be traded, they plan to keep him and want to re-sign him in the off-season. Steve Nash says he is not asking for a trade, but if the Suns moved him he’d understand but that he couldn’t imagine jumping ship on his teammates and friends.

Neither side seems like they want a trade, however that has not stopped teams from calling. But the word is that Phoenix is not trading Nash, so unless that changes in the next ten days, Nash may end the season where he started it.

Nash is cheap by NBA All-Star standards at $11.6 million this season and word is the Suns would do another two-year deal with Nash at or around the same dollar amount.

The Suns do have players they’d love to cash out – Josh Childress, Hakim Warrick and Robin Lopez are the top names. League sources joked that you just need to make an offer and you might get one of them.

Channing Frye and Shannon Brown have been mentioned a few times as well so there is no shortage of trade chips.

The Suns are miserably bad, so they may come to the realization that its time to blow things up, but considering the team has just $31.8 million in salary commitments, they will be free agent players next summer and having Nash to run the show is a lot more attractive than not having him.

It won’t be surprising to see the Suns trade Nash; however they keep saying they won’t. What is more likely is that the Suns deal smaller parts and try and set up their roster and their draft for next year.

It will be interesting to see how this plays out, because teams in Phoenix’s spot usually cash out.

Portland Trail Blazers:

Who Is Likely On The Move?: Marcus Camby, Raymond Felton, Gerald Wallace, Jamal Crawford

The Portland Trail Blazers are starting to implode and that’s got worry ownership and management.

The Blazers have some moveable trade chips, the question is are the Blazers buyers or sellers?

Marcus Camby and his ending $12.8 million contract might return some nice pieces that have years on their contracts, however ownership loves Marcus so will he be allowed to be moved? Marcus is still playing well and a number of playoff teams would love to have Marcus even at his age.

Raymond Felton has fallen out of favor with just about everyone in Portland. He has been shopped around a little. He’d love to be traded, and the Lakers have expressed some level of interest. Raymond may not be the perfect answer for the Lakers’ woes, but if Portland decides to dump and the Lakers cannot find a better deal there could be a match.

Felton is an expiring contract worth $7.56 million, so he is not a long-term risk.

Gerald Wallace has a $9.5 million player option next year and sources say his camp has made it clear that if healthy he’ll opt for Free Agency if only to secure longer term money. That’s means Portland has to decide whether to trade him now or risk losing him to the open market.

As HOOPSWORLD reported yesterday, Jamal Crawford is on the block. In part at the Blazers request, but there is no doubting that the situation Jamal finds himself is not exactly what he signed up for as a free agent.

Sources close to Crawford say he has not asked for a trade, but wouldn’t be opposed to a deal either, especially if it landed him in a less chaotic situation.

There have be reports of unrest inside the Blazers’ locker room and with the team having lost seven of their last ten games and 12 of their last 20 games – major roster shake up seems likely in Portland especially with the team now being four games out of the Playoff picture.

Portland has six games remaining before the trade deadline, if the downward trend continues, look for a fire sale in Portland.

Sacramento Kings:

Who Is Likely On The Move?: Jason Thompson, John Salmons, J.J. Hickson, Hassan Whiteside, Francisco Garcia

With a new arena all but agreed to in Sacramento, the Kings can now start focusing on their future.

The Kings have some trade chips, but the question is how much interest is there in guys on one of the worst teams in the league?

John Salmons can be had, but his remaining two years and $15.66 million in guaranteed money are tough to justify in trade, unless it’s a swap of bad contracts.

Francisco Garcia is in a similar situation. Cisco is owed $5.8 million this year and $6.1 million next year and has a team option worth $6.4 in 2013. It’s not a terrible deal, but for a guy that’s missed 107 games over the last four seasons, he’s serviceable, but not a great trade chip.

Word is the Kings have explored trading Jason Thompson and JJ Hickson, both are young guys with some upside so keep an eye on those two.

Hassan Whiteside has not amounted to much for the Kings and with DeMarcus Cousins and Chuck Hayes holding down the front court Hassan could likely be had for a song.

The Kings have trade chips, but like a number of teams, how valuable do other teams view them and do they really improve the teams they land with?

San Antonio Spurs:

Who Is Likely On The Move?: James Anderson, T.J. Ford

To be honest, the Spurs are not active at all in the trade market. They are listening to what’s out there because you have to do that at the trade deadline, but they have not had meaningful discussions with anyone according to league sources.

If the Spurs have something cooking, they are doing a great job keeping it quiet.

League source pegged Anderson and TJ Ford as expendable chips on the Spurs roster, but neither makes much in terms of salary and neither means much in the big picture.

If the Spurs make a trade it will be surprising, so don’t count on much coming out of San Antonio in the next ten days.

Toronto Raptors:

Who Is Likely On The Move?: Jose Calderon, Andrea Bargnani, Leandro Barbosa, Jerryd Bayless, James Johnson

The Raptors have a ton of trade chips, the question is will they pull the trigger now or wait until the draft to start re-shaping for the future.

The Raptors are six games out of the playoff picture and have been winning 32% of their games. That’s not exactly the recipe for a playoff run.

Jose Calderon is having a great year and after two years of believing no team would take his contract, more than a couple of teams have called about Jose so the time might be now to dump the $9.7 million he is owed this year, if only to clear the $10.5 million he is owed from the cap next year.

Raptor’s coach Dwane Casey has been extremely vocal that trading Jose would be a step backwards for the team on the court, but given where they stand in the big picture the draft pick obtained from tanking now is worth more than Jose going forward.

Andre Bargnani’s name gets mentioned a lot with the Raptors, but league sources say the Raptors continue to turn away offers on Bargs. The belief is he was a borderline All-Star this year before getting hurt, and once he is paired with this year’s first round pick Jonas Valančiūnas next year he’ll get even better.

Leandro Barbosas is an ending contract and there is considerable interest around the league in LB, so look for him to be a name mentioned a lot in the next ten days.

Jerryd Bayless will likely be a restricted free agent this summer, so Toronto has to decide if he is their future plans. Jerryd has trade value so he is a name to watch as is James Johnson.

Neither Bayless nor Johnson will return much, but they are chips the Raptors could cash to infuse the roster with new blood or extract draft picks for their troubles.

Expect the Raptors to be active around the trade deadline. Their season is going nowhere and they finally have guys playing to the level of their contracts, so this might be the ultimate sell high situation for Toronto.

Utah Jazz:

Who Is Likely On The Move?: Al Jefferson, Devin Harris, Paul Millsap, Raja Bell, Jamaal Tinsley

The wheels have started to come off of the Utah Jazz, they have lost seven of their last ten games and 12 of their last 17 games.

The Jazz have been sniffing around the trade market for a while, so expect them to be active at the deadline.

With Derek Favors starting to show the promise of his draft status and Enes Kanter needing more floor time the Jazz have some choices to make.

The Jazz would love to dump Devin Harris and the $9.31 million he is owed this year along with the $8.5 million he is owed next year.

There is talk that the team would be open to moving Al Jefferson and his hefty contract too. Al is owed $14 million this year and $15 million next year. But for a 6’10 big man that’s averaging 18.5 points and 9 rebounds per game, that’s good value, so don’t expect Jefferson to be moved for bad contracts.

Paul Millsap is arguably the most coveted Jazz player; he has a reasonable contract with $8.1 million owed this year and a final year worth $8.6 million next year.

Raja Bell and Jamaal Tinsley have both been mentioned in trade scenarios involving the Jazz as both would like to be moved to bona fide playoff teams if the Jazz are going to break up their squad.

The Jazz have some of the best trade assets in the field, the problem is they are going to require someone to take Devin Harris as part of a transaction and that might be hard to pull off.

The Jazz have six games remaining before the trade deadline. If their season continues to slip away, they may lower their price on some players simply to position themselves for next season.

Washington Wizards:

Who Is Likely On The Move?: Andray Blatche, Nick Young, Mo Evans, Roger Mason

The Wizards are going nowhere fast and they know it.

The obvious player the Wizards would love to trade is Rashard Lewis and the $22.13 million he is owed this year. The problem is Shard has earned enough of the incentives over the course of his deal that more than $15 million of his $22.69 million next year is fully guaranteed. So scratch that one off the list.

There have been reports that the Wizards have been aggressively shopping Andray Blatche. Good luck finding a team that’s willing to take on the remaining three years and $23.37 million owed after this season.

Andray is not viewed well around the league, and sources inside the Wizards locker room peg him as a key reason for the team’s dysfunction, so unless the Wizards are willing to take on a bad contract for Andray, it’s unlikely that they can move him.

Nick Young is a viable trade chip, but because he took the Qualifying Offer this year after failing to land a major free agent offer, he has the right to veto any trades.

Sources close to the process say Nick would welcome a trade, so that may not be much of an issue but he’ll have the right to veto if the situation is not right.

Mo Evans and Roger Mason are solid veteran trade chips; neither earns much so deals involving them won’t return much, even if combined together.

The Wizards are actively involved in the trade market, but given how bad things have gone chemistry-wise, most teams may avoid the risk of introducing a bad apple to their own situation.

So there you have it… All 30 NBA teams are in the books.

By way of disclaimer… keep in mind the trade market is a fluid ever changing place. The deals NBA teams turn away on Monday can become attractive on Thursday.

As the trade deadline gets closer, teams that want to make changes tend to come down to earth and just because a team is talking to other teams does not mean they are ready to break apart their roster.

A common theme among league executives is that with the compressed 66 game schedule teams are fighting through, is there really enough practice and development time to integrate new players and pieces.

Teams that need parts are more willing to take the risk than teams that are just looking to bolster their squad.

The 2012 NBA Trade deadline is March 15th, as with most deadlines there will be a lot more chatter about deals than actual transactions.

Coming Down To Earth:  From the very beginning of New York’s Linsanity, I cautioned everyone to just let Knicks’ guard Jeremy Lin be Jeremy Lin. The numbers and success that Jeremy had early on were going to come down to earth and yesterday in Boston things came back to earth as all things tend to do.

Jeremy had 14 points on 6-of-16 shooting with 5 assists, 4 rebounds and 6 turnovers. To make matters worse Jeremy was torched by Boston’s Rajon Rondo who had 18 points, 17 rebounds and 20 assists.

To be fair, Rondo torched more than just Jeremy, he torched everyone in a Knick jersey, but the game you saw yesterday is the game most NBA teams saw in Jeremy Lin when they passed on him.

Knicks’ coach Mike D’Antoni did his best to explain the learning curve Jeremy is undergoing, but that’s not going to stop the attacks Jeremy is going to face after such a meteoric rise to fame and celebrity.

“The thing about Jeremy is that he’s gonna make some mistakes,” D’Antoni said to Ben Rohrbach of WEEI. “He’s got a learning curve. There’s no way you can throw him in there the first time he ever does it and expect it to be perfect, but he finds a way to be very positive in the end of games. He hit the big 3 and a couple of other shots. It was good, and he’s gonna be good. It’s just a matter of going through some learning experiences.”

Knicks’ teammate Amar’e Stoudemire said the Celtic’s game plan for Jeremy was part of being a focal point of a team and that Jeremy will see more of this as the season progresses.

“When you become a good player, man, the scouting report is out,” explained Stoudemire. “That’s something that Carmelo and I face our whole career, so it’s something that he’s going to have to get used to. We’re going to help him. We’re going to get him open on screens. Teams are going to try to apply pressure and get out on screens, try to trap him, create havoc, but having such a talented team around him, he’s going to be Ok.”

Jeremy has handled all of the spotlight and pressure with amazing character and poise, and even after the loss last night Jeremy again tried to lower the expectation level as he has since this started.

“I’m definitely a target, but I think that’s fine, because we have such a well-rounded team,” said Lin. “But it’s just going to take time. It’s my whatever 11th, 12th game — I don’t really know. It’s early on, so I’m learning a lot and absorbing information right now.”

In the other locker room Boston’s Kevin Garnett said he was proud of his team’s resolve, especially that of Rajon Rondo who has been the subject of trade rumors lately.

“I saved the [box score], just as a witness that I was here, and I actually got to see this up front and center,” Garnett said. “The thing about Lin is I think everybody who’s at the point guard position is going to be excited to play the kid, and Rondo was nothing short of that today. I could see it. I could tell. I’ve been around him long enough to know when he’s motivated and when he’s more than motivated, and tonight was one of those nights.”

“You could see it on his face, just like when he was playing Deron Williams,” said Garnett. “If you want to be anything in this league, you have to play against the opposition at your position. The trade talks really, really is a good motivating factor for him. If you know Rondo, he’s a ‘I’ll show you’ type of person, and he’s very, very motivated, and that’s what you love about him. This game had enough juice on it for him to come out and play the way he played. I’m happy for him.”

The Celtics now find themselves in 7th place in the East having won four straight games.

The Knicks however have come back to earth a little and have settled back into the eighth seed.

Jeremy Lin will have good games as the season goes on, but equally like most players who get their first starting job in the NBA, he’ll struggle a little too especially as teams game plan for him.

Jeremy is going to get crushed in the media when he struggles… the back page of the Boston Herald today asks “Lin Who?”. That’s how it’s going to be when a player is thrust onto the big stage like Jeremy was.

Everyone comes back to their average over a long enough span. That’s doesn’t make Jeremy Lin anything more than a typical NBA player.

They all come back to their average, and they all come down to earth at some point.
