NBA Chat With Eric Pincus 6/5/12

Welcome to NBA Chat with HOOPSWORLD Senior Writer Eric Pincus.  I am completely overloaded early with questions!  Thanks for a fantastic turn-out.  I’ll have to shut off the question function, but stay tuned for plenty of answers . . .

Eric covers the L.A. Lakers, Clippers and NBA at large.

  1. David Rivas

Who do you think should Sacramento Kings select?

    • Eric Pincus

Conference Finals rolling – draft coming. Today we chat:

      David,

I’m not sure yet, still doing analysis but I’m not sure I like Andre Drummond in Sacramento. If they can get Thomas Robinson, that’s a win.

  2. Edward Lee

Hi Eric! I was wondering why Von Wafer has problems staying with teams. He seems to be a decent player though. Is it a question of his attitude on and off court?
    Thanks

    • Eric Pincus

Von is a scorer, first, second and third. He looks for his shot and that’s what he does. That can be hard to fit into a team game given he doesn’t pass, rebound or defend especially well. In the right situation, I still think Wafer can help a team.

  3. Rico

Do you think the Lakers give Rashard Lewis a look when and if he gets bought out (most likely). I think he could be a helpful stretch four who can still shoot the three ball. What’s your take?

    • Eric Pincus

I do. I think he’s a great fit and someone they have a real shot to get at the minimum. I can’t see any reason the Wizards don’t buy him out given they’ll save about $10 million to do so.

  4. Laker Consultant

    Eric,

Thanks for keeping us up to date on the Lake Show! Stephen A. Smith said the idea of Bynum to the Nets for Williams and Lopez is something the teams should explore. Given that D. Will & KB considered playing together during the lockout, is that a possibility?

    • Eric Pincus

I don’t believe the Lakers move Bynum for Deron Williams. I’m not sure the Lakers consider moving Bynum at all frankly – maybe for Dwight Howard but even that’s not clear.

  5. jesse

First off, thanks for giving us a closer look into our beloved basketball teams and a place to geek out on our passion!…So u mentioned last week that you witnessed last years draft and are convinced it is not rigged…can u please describe what you witnessed so that we common folk can understand how it works…i for one have a hard time swallowing how last years cavs lose lebron so humiliatingly, have a very public fit and then hit the lotto with clips’ 8th pick to end up with 1st & 4th, then this years hornets win the lotto right after being owned & sold by the NBA…just seems very peculiar but i trust your insight on this…please share…thank you

    • Eric Pincus

I didn’t witness the lottery myself in person, didn’t say that. I did say that select reporters every year, ones I know and trust, do witness it. Additionally every team that doesn’t win, and has every interest to call foul if there was some sort of cheating, they’re involved in the process. So too is an independent accounting firm. The only way it could be rigged would be with robot balls, etc. and the amount of people that would have to be involved to commit fraud, risking the very existence of the NBA as a league, just isn’t realistic.

The NBA had no incentive to give the Cavaliers the top pick. What happened with LeBron James didn’t give the NBA any incentive to give Cleveland anything. The Hornets were sold already, before the regular season even ended. There was no handshake deal to guarantee a first-round pick. It defies logic because there were multiple suitors going after the team and the price paid was in line with what it was worth, without that first.

It’s really easy to claim fraud because of circumstance but it’s not based on any rational reality. The tiny gain in fixing the lottery, put through the most simple cost/benefit analysis does not provide enough, within a million miles, of the cost should the league be exposed.

If you want to talk frozen envelopes in 1985, I’m going to only focus on my time as reporter in the NBA and since the current lottery ball system went into place. There hasn’t been any fraud.

  6. Vito Villegas

Hi Eric! I appreciate your answers to my questions and look forward to your chats every week. Do you think Brandon Roy is ever going to play again? If so, is ther a possibility of him playing with the Lakers? Also, who in your opinion should the Lakers use their Lamar Odom trade exception?

    • Eric Pincus

I hear that Roy wants to play again. He apparently feels he was pushed prematurely into retirement. I can’t say he’s back this season but I do think down the line he could be. The Lakers may be a possibility but there’s no way the Odom exception can be used. Roy, amnestied by the Blazers, cannot be acquired via sign and trade.

  7. Louis

How’s it going Eric? Theoretically, if Gasol was traded and the Lakers don’t take back as much salary(through a TPE) or manage to cut away enough salary this offseason to be just under the tax line, does the full MLE then become available this offseason?

    • Eric Pincus

If the Lakers get below the tax so that spending about $5 million via MLE doesn’t put them above the apron ($4 million over the tax), then yes, they’d have their full MLE.

  8. Dave

Is a front court of Biyombo and T. Robinson a good idea? Their both 6-9. Are they to small to play center. The most favorable comparison for Byiombo is Ibaka and the thunder acquired Perkins to guard the the Bynums and Howards of the NBA.

    • Eric Pincus

The Bobcats just need to bring in best talent available. There’s a considerable talent gap on that roster. Once the talent starts to develop, then it becomes a matter of chemistry and piecing together a roster that can win. If Robinson is the best player by their analysis (every team looks at things differently), then by all means.

  9. Leon

    Good afternoon, Eric,
I usually don’t get into the proposal of three-way trades, since you so often say that they are hard to pull off. However, seeing how Minny wouldn’t mind parting with their pick(18th), I have a proposal for you.

Houston receive: Pau Gasol, JJ Barea, & Minn. 18th pick
Minnesota receive: Kevin Martin, Courtney Lee, Steve
    Blake, & Hou. 14th pick
Lakers receive: Derrick Williams, Kyle Lowry, Brad Miller,
    & Martell Webster
I know it’s a multitude of moving parts, but Martin reunites with Adelman. Also, Houston finally gets Gasol. Lastly, the Lakers get younger, and more defensive minded at the point. Tell me your thoughts.

    • Eric Pincus

I think it’s “somewhat” reasonable to say that the Lakers with Gasol, Houston with Martin and the Wolves with various pieces might have the ability to execute a three-team trade. They’re hard to construct and rare. The issue in your scenario is that Lee is a free agent and thus can’t be dealt until July – and on his decision since he doesn’t have to agree to play in Minnesota. Additionally the Minnesota and Houston picks are made in June, so the timing on your package just doesn’t really work I’m afraid.

  10. Leon

    Eric,
I read that Stephen A. Smith thinks that Kevin Garnett could sign with the Lakers this summer. Would KG sign only for the taxpayers’ MLE? I find that hard to believe, even if he and Kobe are close. Do you see any chance of this happening?

    • Eric Pincus

Is there a chance? Sure. Do I expect it? No.

  11. John T

    Who says no?
Lakers trade PF Pau Gasol to Boston for SF Paul Pierce.

Then, you gotta believe Kevin Garnett signs with the Lakers (best friends with Pierce, lives in Cali, chasing a ship).

    Championship contenders?

    • Eric Pincus

I don’t see the Lakers targeting Pierce.

  12. Oleg

Good day sir! Die hard laker fan here. What are your thoughts on a Gasol for Ilyasova package trade? Maybe Ilyasova, Luc Mbah Moute and Jennings? If that’s to much get Udrih instead of Jennings. But the main piece should be Ilyasova. He’s a hustle player, good rebounder, a stretch forward and a no nonsense kinda person. The trade would also benefit the bucks with Gasol filling in the middle left by the Bogut trade. They would have their big 3 in Jennings, Elis and Gasol. Thank you sir!

    • Eric Pincus

Ilyasova would be a nice fit next to Bynum. I’m not sure the Bucks move Jennings though, I’m skeptical on that end – at least during this summer. of course Ilyasova would have to agree to that and the Lakers would have to come up with the right number for Ersan. It’s a stretch I would say across the board, starting with the Bucks adding in Gasol’s large contract.

  13. Michael

Any chance of the Suns trading Steve Nash to the Lakers for part or all of their 8.9m TPE?

    • Eric Pincus

If Nash specifically asked to go to the Lakers I think the Suns would consider it. I actually think Steve stays in Phoenix where he has a training staff he knows will keep him healthy.

  14. AL B

    What’s up E?
I’ve been thinking if a DJ and Mo Williams swap for Al Jefferson is viable?

    • Eric Pincus

Do the Jazz need to swap out one of their bigs . . . for another expensive big?

  15. evanhenrique(brazil)

Wich steps do you think the Clippers need to take in order to contend next year?

    • Eric Pincus

They need floor-spreaders, size at two-guard, defense, maturity, etc.

  16. VJ

Is there any possibility Clippers to trade Mo Williams to Paul Millsap or DJ and Mo to Al Jefferson?

    • Eric Pincus

Millsap/Jefferson – if they’re adding on DeAndre – that’s a team that has too much size and needs help at guard. Yes, Williams might be able to help but I’m not sure that’s the guard the Jazz have in mind.

  17. steppxxxxz

Seems Dragic should have a lot of interest around the league. Where do you think he might go? (Im assuming Lowry stays).

    • Eric Pincus

I’m not sure Lowry stays – the Rockets may opt instead to sign Dragic.

  18. Jeff V

Pincus lets have you as the clippers gm this offseason. Who would you sign and who would you trade for to build the clippers? Lets go sexy Pincus

    • Eric Pincus

I’m just laughing at the wording of your question.

  19. Adam

I know olshey got his contract extended. Do you know the numbers on the deal, how long can we expect olshey around.

    • Eric Pincus

Yeah, this question was submitted before all that craziness on Monday.

  20. Zeeshan

Biiger possibility? Nash to bulls or kid to bulls?

    • Eric Pincus

Kidd, especially if the Mavericks need to renounce his rights to maximize cap room – whereas as I said earlier I think Nash stays in Phoenix.

  21. luke

Better player when completely? Rose or Wade?

    • Eric Pincus

Wade is already starting to hit the back nine while Rose, if healthy, would be gaining rapidly. Alas we won’t see Derrick until what? All-Star break?

  22. Dan

Celtics vs Heat game 5! Who u got by how much?

    • Eric Pincus

I have HEAT, not sure score. I actually have Celtics winning the last two games and taking the series.

  23. matt from Oz

    Hi Eric,
Is Derrick Williams the starting SF for the Timberwolves next season? he showed some major upside in games, although probably not frequent enough.
i’d like to think the Wolves dee combining him with Love as their future, along with Ricky.
    Thanks Eric.

    • Eric Pincus

      I don’t think he’s a small forward. He’s better suited as a face-up four.

  24. 76ERS4LIFE

read on the internet that the 76ers trade iggy, thad and vucevic for gay and gasol. i don’t believe it but, do they have a shot at gay?

    • Eric Pincus

Let’s just say I’m not thinking that’s well sourced.

  25. NuggJim

Hey Eric, heard the Lakers had some interest in Al Harrington for their $8.9M TPE and a 2nd, any legs to this ?

    • Eric Pincus

He fits the “idea” of what the Lakers need. We’ll see what they get if they move Gasol – or if they stay pat and just add in role players.

  26. William Gaddis

Is it safe to say that a somewhat healthy Ginobli on 1 1/2 legs is still far better than Kevin Durant?

    • Eric Pincus

      I wouldn’t say that’s even remotely true.

  27. Iron

Hi Eric, enjoying your coverage and insight, as usual.

If indeed the Lakers are battling salary cap and luxury tax issues as much as – or more – than their apparent roster configuration limitations, even if they could engineer the acquisitions of Dwight Howard and Deron Williams, would they be willing to absorb the considerable financial penalties that would go along with having them join Kobe?

    • Eric Pincus

For the one-year that’d be an issue, yes they’d absorb that tax burden. Now what would that mean when it comes to re-signing Kobe as a free agent? That’s a tough call.

  28. javier garcia

Okay Eric, what’s the best package available for Gasol? Min,Hou or Chi? Maybe a package for the 2nd or 3rd pick? For Robinson. What would you do if you were Mitch?
    T

    • Eric Pincus

I don’t get the sense the Lakers are targeting a high lottery pick in this draft but everyone’s early in the process so we’ll have to wait and see.

  29. javier garcia

Eric would you package McRoberts & Blake to Portland for Matthews & S. Williams or to G.S. for D. Wright & 2nd round pick? Maybe something similar you’ve been pondering???

    • Eric Pincus

You can argue that from the Lakers side but from Portland or Golden State’s? I’m not sure. Wright might be a target for the Lakers actually . . .

  30. jon

love your chats. The $64,000 question: If the only way Kobe could win another championship was to channel his inner magic johnson and only average 12-15 shots a game, do you think would be do so? Would he even be capable of doing so? I know you probably have to deal Kobe so I a ‘nuanced’ answer is understandable.

    • Eric Pincus

If Kobe had the right pieces, I think he’d give up “some” shots. Let’s go 15 though, and that’s pushing it.

  31. Tony

I wonder if Kobe is rooting against Derek Fisher getting ring #6?

    • Eric Pincus

I don’t think Kobe is “rooting” for any team but I do believe he’d be happy for Fisher.

  32. Cricket

The public is told NBA referees are graded after every single playoff game. If this is true, how many officials are taken off of crews in the Conference Finals/NBA Finals game due to poor performance. Is it usual for an official to be replaced? Approx. how many referees are used in a rotation during the nitty gritty of the playoffs?

    • Eric Pincus

The officials in the Conference Finals and then Finals are the top-graded refs (internally). I’d have to look up some of the other questions and alas in the chat format, I’m not sure I have the time to . . .

  33. Frank

Hypothetical Situation: We reverse the Jeff Green / Kendrick Perkins trade from a few years ago. Does this sway the situation in any of the Conference Finals series? Boston with more size to battle the Boshless HEAT. Or less of an inside presence from OKC against the bigs of SA?

    • Eric Pincus

The Thunder need what Perkins is giving them a lot more than Green. The Celtics too could use Perkins. I didn’t like that deal for Boston when it happened.

  34. lb

    Hi Eric
Would a Bynum for Hibert & Granger work for both teams?, that along with Pau to Houston for (the possibly tradeable)Lowry & Martin. Indiana gets #2 center, Lakers get two starters and with Houston we get our point guard and a back-up point guard who would be a good expiring contract after this season.
What do you think, would either team be interested in this?

    • Eric Pincus

I really don’t expect LA to move Bynum.

  35. lazeric

What’s up EP? So I got 2 trades for u:
    1. Orlando gets both Portland picks and Miami 1st rounder and Joel Anthony, Portland gets Bosh and Chalmers, Miami gets Dwight and QRich. Portland gets the Pf they need and a nice young PG, Orlando gets a ton of picks and s serviceable C, Miami gets the best big man for that team.

    2. Timberwolves get Jason Richardson for their 1st round draft pick. Minny gets their 2 guard and Orlando gets another building block on the cheap.

    • Eric Pincus

I don’t think the HEAT trade Bosh and I don’t see Richardson as worth it for the Wolves.

  36. Sean

Hey Eric always a fan of the chats.

I would love to see Iguodala, Josh Smith, Deron Williams, anyone of these guys in a Laker uniform but because of the new CBA and Kobe’s contract we cannot have a third star on this team. Please post for all Laker fans.

I think realistically Lakers should go for derrick williams at PF i love his upside and I think he compliments Bynum very well. Maybe sign and trade Beasley and Derrick Williams for Gasol?

Also, since the Clips are definitely selling Mo Williams what will it take for the Lakers to get him from the Clips? Future first round?

    • Eric Pincus

The future of the Lakers isn’t entirely clear. They need to reduce salary but still compete so no one is sure exactly how that looks short-term. Williams is a good get for the Lakers – the model of a young, athletic, cheaper four who is under rookie contract and has upside and an outside shot.

I don’t see LA going after Williams and his $8.5 million but it’s not entirely out of bounds.

  37. Jeremy

Devastating loss for Clips to lose Olshey. What do you think?

    • Eric Pincus

I’ll judge the “loss” based on who the Clippers get to replace Olshey. It’s too early to say.

  38. Freddie

Sactown Kings (not that LA version) here. Was curious about the reports of Memphis taking trade offers for Rudy Gay. Would the #5 pick, John Salmons & “expiring” contract of Francisco Garcia? Or would Tyreke Evans for Gay and the #25 pick work for Memphis?

    • Eric Pincus

I’m going to go against the grain and say the Grizzlies give the group one more year before making that move – or at least until the trade deadline. I’d be surprised if it’s triggered at the draft, but then I’ve been surprised before.

  39. John

Hey Eric, what do you think the chances are the nets make a deal for dwight and what would a plausible deal contain? Also if Memphis were to trade Gay what would be a possible trade scenario in which the nets could land Gay and/or Dwight?

    • Eric Pincus

I don’t really see what the Nets have to offer right now for Howard.

  40. Rockets Fan On Strike till Morey is Fired.

Oshley made the Clips didn’t he? I mean he is the guy that has been pulling the strings on getting Evans, Billups, Kmart, the trade for Nick Young etc, etc. Del Negro is absorbing his duties?
I have no vested interest in the Clippers as an organization but i like the team Oshley put together. Just how stupid is the team owner?

    • Eric Pincus

Most organizations make decisions as a group. Olshey answered to Andy Roeser who answers to Donald Sterling. Gary Sacks is a solid NBA talent evaluator as well. Certainly some if it was Olshey, but how much? That’s not always black and white.

  41. Ax from Manila

Regardless of where the C’s current playoff run ends, if KG returns to Boston, where will he play? Back to his old 4 position or he’ll stay put at the 5 position?

    • Eric Pincus

Well it would depend on what other moves become available to the Celtics. Long term they can’t play Garnett at center (talking years) but for another year it’s possible I suppose.

  42. Pete

Olshey is leaving an up and coming franchise for one that’s in a mini rebuilding phase. Is this any indication of unhappiness on Neil’s part in LA?

    • Eric Pincus

I’m thinking he had a better financial opportunity in Portland but don’t have the concrete answers just yet.

  43. Pete

Now that Bynum is locked in for another season in LA, do they start discussions on an extension now , or do they wait until after the deadline just in case Dwight is available to the Lakers?

  44. KP

Losing Olshey obviously wasn’t ideal, but it’s not devastating either. what is devastating is the idea of turmoil in the Clipper front office and Sterling. Would any respectable GM really want to work for DTS and would DTS even give a multi-year contract to a respectable GM? With their cap situation, the Clippers need someone who can get creative and I just don’t see anyone like that taking a chance to work for Sterling. I’m I wrong to think things are looking grim?

    • Eric Pincus

The Clippers sold out every game last year. They’ve got a talented roster and will probably have Blake Griffin for another six seasons at a minimum. I think they’ll find a quality GM.

  45. Pete

Last week Bruce Bowen commented that Pau Gasol’s days were over as a Laker because the relationship between he and Kobe had soured to the point that Kobe and Pau jaw at each other on the court over missed assignments and Kobe no longer trusts in Pau as a sidekick. Is any of this true from what you’re seeing on the court this year Eric?

    • Eric Pincus

I didn’t see the fire in Gasol the last two postseasons. Plain and simple – and don’t think Kobe didn’t see that.

  46. Pete

Besides Houston and Minny being “reportedly interested” in Pau, do you know if there are any other teams interested in Pau who actually has the peices LA is looking for in return?

    • Eric Pincus

I would say there are 5-6 teams with varying degrees of interest in Gasol but it’s going to whittle down to 1-2 by the time a deal is made based on the kind of assets the Lakers need in return. What complicates matters is the possibility of multi-team trades – difficult to execute but possibly the answer here for the Lakers.

  47. keo

So Memphis is trying to shop gay around …do you think a trade with Boston involving Paul pierce and there two first round picks work? I believe rondo will make gay an all star and will be a great one two punch

    • Eric Pincus

Perhaps, you can argue that Pierce gives the Grizzlies that window to win now but on a much shorter contract.

  48. Kevin

Now that the Warriors have the #7 pick they seem like ideal trade partners for the Magic. How about #7, RJ, and Bogut for Dwight?

    • Eric Pincus

I’m thinking Bogut suits up as a Warrior this season.

  49. Joaquin, West Covina

Pau Gasol is going to be traded and I believe is going to Minnesota. Should you trade him or trade Bynum?.

    • Eric Pincus

A 24-year old All-Star center or a 31-year old former-All-Star power forward? What GM keeps the latter?

  50. Mike

Who do you see being the top candidates for the new general manager?? Could you see them promoting within like they did with Olshey? Thanks always enjoy the chats.

    • Eric Pincus

If they promote from withing, it’d probably be Sacks. I’m thinking they hire someone though. It’s too early to say who but I’ve heard the name Ronnie Lester, Kiki Vandeweghe and Jeff Bower – but please take that as a “way-way-too-early” list of possibilities.

  51. Kevin

    Hi Eric,

I understand the Lakers not wanting to rebuild as long as Kobe is on the team and Pau is the only real trade chip with any value. However, wouldn’t other teams know this and lowball every offer??

    • Eric Pincus

But if a team really wants Pau? For the most part teams always low-ball which is why trades often take so long. At some point it will be decision time and the team with the best offer is the one who will get Gasol. Pau still has a number of good years left and will help a team struggling to make the playoffs into a squad that has a shot at the 4-5 seed.

  52. Rosit

    Good day Eric!
What are the Lakers’ chances getting Beasley?
Who do you think can replace Pau spot if he is traded for Deron?

    • Eric Pincus

The Nets don’t want Gasol for Deron. They’d rather have cap space if Williams left. As far as Beasley, it depends on what the Lakers get for Pau (if they move him) but Beasley has some merit as a scoring four next to Bynum. LA can try to construct a sign and trade with Minnesota via their trade exception or offer the $3 million Mini-Mle to Beasley.

  53. Nik

How about this trade. Bobcats trade their number 2 pick to the Kings for Tyreke and the #5. That way Kings could get MKG and have money to resign Thompson. And Bobcats get two huge assets.

    • Eric Pincus

Is giving up Tyreke worth climbing three spots? I’m not sure it is.

  54. J

    Hi Eric,

Is Gasol/Blake for Iguodala/Holliday/Hawes (SnT) realistic? Who wins and who looses?

  55. Nik

Iguodala for Millsap? As far as im concerned that helps both teams

  56. Sasha (The Machine) Vujacic

Should the Lakers try and contact me? I’m pretty sure I can help with their perimeter issues.

    • Eric Pincus

I don’t see LA revisiting the past be it with Sasha or Lamar.

  57. Rovyn

Ive been a Warrior faithful since the days of Mookie Blaylock and Vonteego Cummings. Not to Mention the draft day swap of Jamison for Carter and Carter highlighting the all star game in the Oakland arena. But I feel like we have the squad to potential to be a playoff even championship caliber team. Although I am not sold on Curry’s ability at the point or even stay healthy for that matter i can see him contributing 20+ and 6+ a game. With that said at the 7th pick can harrison barnes expected there. He seems like a better Marvin Williams to me l. If not what other route can the Warriors go?

Last thing David Lee is heavily underrated. I consider him Top 5 PF in the game today

    • Eric Pincus

If the Warriors can stay healthy, I like their roster. They need depth but as configured – and IF HEALTHY – they’re better than they were last year.

  58. Bay warrior

Howdy EP how you doing brother? Two trades ideas and your thoughts. LAL trades Pau to Minnesota for Beasley Pekovic and Williams then trade Bynum and McRoberts to ATL for Smith and Zaza. Works out for all parties right? Leaves LaL with plenty of roster flexibility

    • Eric Pincus

I’m not sure the Wolves give up Beasley, Pekovic and Williams for Paul – that’s almost all their size outside of Love. I think Beasley is gone and you can argue Williams – but I think you gotta take Pek out of that equation. Nah on Bynum.

  59. Ed

How do you think the Clippers regroup from Olsey leaving? Who will take over and how close was Neil to CP3 and Blake?

    • Eric Pincus

I don’t think it’s “good” to have Olshey leave but then it really matters who they get to replace him. I see Griffin extending regardless. The question, as before with Olshey – what does Paul do?

  60. dc

Lakers trade Pau Gasol to Timberwolves for Derek Williams, Michael Beasley, expiring contract of Brad Miller and Martel Webster. Yes or No?

    • Eric Pincus

You can argue that – by the way Beasley would need to be a sign and trade so it depends on what dollar.

  61. Tom

Hi Eric, after watching the East/West Conf finals it seems that none of the remaining teams really have a solid inside post game. Do you think that this is because the way the game is played today and the current rules (doubling off the ball, zone defenses, punishment on hard fouls) favors the fast athletic team style or is it that none of the teams with dominant inside players are that good.

    • Eric Pincus

The rule changes over recent years have certainly impacted that. There aren’t a ton of true inside players any more. The Lakers have the most of that but lacked depth on perimeter to stay with the Thunder. I still say size wins but it has to be balanced with speed and athleticism.

  62. Walt

Tyreke Evans & Francisco Garcia for Rudy Gay? Memphis saves money and gets depth for their bench and Sacramento gets a sf

    • Eric Pincus

Well Evans has just one year left before he gets a big deal but you can argue that too as well.

  63. Tasia

Hey Eric I know this sounds crazy but I think the Wizards should trade for Gasol.
    WAS trades Lewis/Booker/Singleton/#32/2013 unprotected 1st/2015 top 5 protected 1st
    Gets Gasol and Blake.
    Why fir Wizards?
Yes they are rebuilding but they are serious about making the playoffs at the same time. I Gasol/Nene front court would be ideal(ask the Rockets). Then Beal or Kidd-Gilchrist with their pick. The Wizards are still very bad and probably fighting for the 7th or 8th seed the 1st year with this experiment.
Lakers can get way more for Gasol, but they could save 10 million and get 2 young players a high 2nd and 2 future 1st. Plus if they amnesty Metta they wouldn’t have to pay the tax and get the full mle. I heard saving money is what the Lakers want to do they do it with this trade.

    • Eric Pincus

You can argue it but I’m not sure the Wizards are ready to invest in Gasol like that.

  64. basil

Can the lakers get this guys, reggie evans, kenyon martin,kg, wilson chandler, twilliams(sac), gerald green and andre miller? Thanks

    • Eric Pincus

The Lakers need shooters next to Bynum at four so while Martin is a strong defender – Evans a good energy guy with his rebounding – neither really fits. Garnett fits but I don’t know if he comes. I find it a stretch that he leaves Boston for $3 million to play for the Lakers (unless the Celtics don’t make an offer). Chandler is recovering from surgery and he’s OK, not ideal. Miller wants more money and a starting position. The Nets say they want to pay to keep Green. Is T-Will the only guy left on your list and is he the reason the Lakers are suddenly out of the second round?

  65. pinoy mamba

Hi eric,i feel like the reason lakers lost wasnt because of the roster but chemistry issues. I wish the buss family give this roster just minor tweaks and atvleast another year. Pau gasol is my man. I always see him helping the children’s hospital and always visiting. I wish he will be a laker till he retire. Training camp ,bonding and practice is the answer to win it again. Your thoughts sir?

    • Eric Pincus

I disagree entirely. I view it as 90% roster makeup. The Lakers had no bench and some would argue not even five starters.

  66. tapsilog

Should the clippz give lamar odom a chance?

  67. Focuslja

Do you think the Bobcats have a strong chance of selecting Thomas Robinson if they make the #4,24, 33 pick with CLE?

    • Eric Pincus

A chance but you make that deal expecting to lose out on Robinson. If he’s the guy they want, then you don’t fool around by trading down.

  68. David from PDX

Any preview from your interview with Brian Berger later today? Thoughts on Neil Olshey?

    • Eric Pincus

I’ll be on radio with Berger but I can only guess he’ll ask for my take on Olshey. I view Neil as one of the better GM’s when it comes to dealing with the media. He did a great job this last year and now he gets to prove that it was more him and less the rest of the Clippers’ front office – and the Clippers have the room to prove that is was less Olshey and more the team that made those decisions.

  69. @margoltl

How sold are the Lakers on truly making a trade involving Pau/Bynum this year? Like is it an absolute MUST it happen?

    • Eric Pincus

It doesn’t have to happen yet. The tax doesn’t become a major issue until the 2013/14 season, so there’s a window to let things breathe instead of taking a bad deal.

  70. Leonard

I’m working my way through my DVR recording of 7 Days of Sex. In the meantime, I wanted to ask you what you might have thought about Jim Buss’ comment last week (on 710) that he is very interested to see how the Spurs-OKC turns out – pointing to the future of the NBA – and whether it is tradition or youth and speed prevail. I found that to be a very telling comment, and at this point, even if San Antonio were to somehow take the series, I would read into it as pointing to substantial changes with the Laker roster and perhaps none of the media speculated Gasol trade scenarios (although still trading him). Your thoughts?

    • Eric Pincus

Yes it’s true my wife and I were on a Lifetime show called 7 Days of Sex. I recommend it, especially to married couples with children trying to find time for each other:

      http://www.mylifetime.com/shows/7-days-of-sex/video/season-1/episode-6/episode-6-rousepincus

It’s a little TMI on your friendly HOOPSWORLD reporter but I’m not the type to avoid ownership – so enjoy.

As far as Buss’ comments, I agree fully with him on the Thunder/Spurs series. We could be looking at a changing of the guard. The economics are leading the Lakers down that path anyway – the question is how the execute it.

  71. Chris Collins

What are the chances that the Lakers have both Ramon Sessions & Kyle Lowry at point guard going into training camp in the fall?

    • Eric Pincus

If Sessions opts in and the Lakers trade with Houston to get Lowry – I’d see them either deal or amnesty Steve Blake. It’s all “possible.” Is it likely? I’m not sure there’s a high number on that chance but it’s something to write down in your notes as a maybe.

  72. Tom

What’s the max someone can offer Bynum next summer if he’s not extended or moved ? What’s the max lakers can offer ?

  73. HoopsNationCA

Hi Eric, I’m always impressed with the cheap role players that the Spurs lean on every season. Any thought where James Anderson or Danny Green end up as FA’s this summer? Do they return to S.A. ? The Lakers, Magic, Heat, Wolves and 76ers could all use another shooter off of the bench.

    • Eric Pincus

I see Anderson leaving and Green staying.

  74. Tasos

    Hi Eric from Greece,

    LA:Gay+Scola
    MEM:Martin+World Peace
    HOU:Gasol
    the salaries are good.
    can be done? thanks!!

    • Eric Pincus

I don’t think that’s enough for Gay to Memphis. Martin has trouble staying healthy.

  75. Terry

    Mr. Pincus,

What do you think about this trade?

Pau Gasol to Minny for Williams (S&T), Beasely, and Wolves 18th pick.

Would give the lakers an injection of youth, and I believe save them some money. Williams on his rookie contract, in my opinion, would be a bargain as he improves. Beasely’s character is an issue, but at the right price (about $7-$8/year), might be worth the risk.

    Thoughts?

    • Eric Pincus

Again your timing is off with Beasley as a sign and trade in July and the pick made in June. The Wolves aren’t going to guess they have a deal and pick for the Lakers at 18.

  76. mark norman

Eric, a Chicago blogger says Boozer if amnestied would only cost the Bulls $3.5 to 5 Mil a year over 7 years after picked up by another team’s bid. True?

    • Eric Pincus

Well it certainly depends on how much a team bids to claim Boozer – if it’s $2 million a year, then no.

  77. staszek

What salary, will Jason Thompson get on his new contract? And what is the limit for the Kings to match? Would they match a full MLE? I really like his game and I think he would fit just perfectly with my C’s. Thanks for your answer and all the best to you from Poland (:

    • Eric Pincus

Personally I think it’s tome for Thompson to move on. I’m not sure what the Kings will match. I’m sure if it’s cheap enough they do but I’d like to see Jason in a different situation.

  78. Leo

After seeing how so many teams forced turnovers on us and how they got seemingly 15-20 easy, transition points per night, and how we barely got any for ourselves, I think we should incorporate a trans. element into our offense.

I think a combination of pushing the ball up for easy baskets, as well as having a solid half-court, anchored by Kobe and Bynum, would make us truly legit. title contenders. With that said, I think the focus has to be to swing Pau for 2-3 solid, athletic players (shooting/defense would be a plus), instead of one “star” player – If pushed up the court and scored quick enough, Bynum might not even need to run with them most of time. Your thoughts?

    • Eric Pincus

That’s hard with two bigger, slower players like Gasol and Bynum. Plus Gasol’s $ eats up so much in opportunity cost, it’s not like the Lakers have much to spend to fill the lanes with athletes.

  79. luneta

Will these guys be bak in LA? Mcbob? Steve blake?, tmurph, matt barnes, trevor ariza?jhill? And how about dmorris and goudelock? And wow glimmer of hope,60th pick awesome!

    • Eric Pincus

I’ll say Goudelock because he’s under contract still – if I had to choose one.

  80. Jobert

Hi, EP! Most likely OKC will be going to the finals and the Heat will eventually beat the Celts. What are your predictions if OKC & MIA meet in the finals? I like OKC’s chances this year, any thoughts?

  81. boombox

Will the spurs big 3 break up after this season? Trade maybe ginobli for kg? Maybe add a piece or 2 to make it work??

  82. Ryan H

Say the Lakers trade Bynum for Howard in an one for deal and then move Gasol to Houston for Lowry and Scola. Wouldnt that roster be significantly better than the current one. Also if they dont move Bynum, Is he in your opinion someone the Lakers can turn the franchise over to when Kobe is done?

    • Eric Pincus

The Lakers need the future perimeter player to pair with Bynum. Who that is remains a long mystery – even to the Lakers.

  83. Metal Matty

Now that the moving pick has become the most powerful weapon in the NBA. Do you think it is possible that Kurt Thomas can play beyond 50? And would he be the first to play beyond 50 years of age in professional basketball?

  84. Scott

Do the Clippers need to move Bledsoe before they have to pay him next summer or is he CP3 insurance? If they move him do you go for a pick or somebody that can help right away?

    • Eric Pincus

The Clippers have real teams offering lottery picks for Bledsoe but I think they keep him.

  85. Chris

Eric, love the chats keep up the good work! Watching the playoffs has made me think that the NBA needs to get rid of charge calls. Charges are disrupting the flow of the game and are really changing the make up of the games. Also, I know everyone wants to hit a home run in moving Gasol, but what about opening up talks with the Wolves centered around Williams/Beasley. I’d prefer Rondo or Williams for Gasol but that isn’t happening, thoughts?

    • Eric Pincus

It’s a tough call but without the charge, players can just run over their defenders. I don’t think outlawing it makes sense.

  86. Andrew

Any chance of a Bynum for Gay/Speights trade? Seems good for both teams, plus Memphis can use Gasol as a trade ship to get Wings

    • Eric Pincus

I think you’re somewhat in fantasy land here.

  87. angelo

Hi Eric, do you think there is a risk chris paul leaves the clippers in 2013?

  88. J Love

Any clue if Mo for Frye straight up works for PHX given the emergence of Markeiff as their stretch big of the future.

Otherwise, strictly from a value standpoint, does Ebled+Caron+Gomes get Iggy/Granger(doubtful)/Gay/Deng back?

Thanks for always making yourself available to ClipperNation Eric! Much appreciated!

    • Eric Pincus

Frye is getting over shoulder surgery and I’m not sure he’s playing by January.

  89. John Abernathy

Hey do you think the Rockets and Nets would do this trade with the Lakers?
Pau Gasol to the Rockets, Kyle Lowry, Luis Scola, Patrick Patterson and a 1st round pick to the Nets, and Deron Williams to the Lakers.
Also, are the Hornets looking to move Ariza?

    • Eric Pincus

That’s the idea of what it would take for Williams to end up a Laker. He’d really have to try and force something like that and I’m not sure if that’s the exact package the Nets go for. Hornets are in flux with new ownership. I think Ariza can be had but I’m not sold for nothing.

  90. Eric G

Could the amnesty be used on Bynum once his anticipatated entension kicks in case of injury? It can be used only on contracts in place when the new cba kicked in but isn’t an extension technically the same contract?

  91. TWILL

What are the chances that the Lakers move Bynum instead of Gasol?

  92. Sean

In your opinion, do you think the clippers showed the appropriate level of appreciation toward Olshey? From what it seems like they didn’t offer him a long term deal at first, but then agreed to match portlands deal. Do you know what the term of the deal which they had reached a “verbal agreement”?

    • Eric Pincus

Some time free agents would rather hit the market than take an extension – can you say that’s not what happened with Olshey?

  93. Tom

Pau Gasol to Philly for Andre Iguodala + salary filler. Who says no?

    • Eric Pincus

I’m not sure what the Sixers want for Iguodala or if they’d invest in Gasol for his two big remaining years.

  94. Bob

Do you see the Lakers trying to get a first round pick? If so, who would they be targeting? Thanks.

    • Eric Pincus

It doesn’t sound like a priority for the Lakers to get a first this year.

  95. Josh

    Eric,

What do you supposed the Jazz do at this point? Do you think they stand pat for another year, trade into the draft, or make a trade of something like Jefferson for Kevin Martin and the 16th?

    • Eric Pincus

You can argue that Martin would be a good get for the Jazz.

  96. Bob

Are they Lakers looking at any of the free agent PGs available or are they content with Sessions?

    • Eric Pincus

Lakers have very little to spend in free agency. The odds of getting someone better than Sessions would probably be low.

  97. Beau

Given they are already young and stacked, what do you see the Thunder doing this offseason?
I would like to see Perkins swapped out for a post scorer.

  98. cristian martinez

When can we expect a new GM for the clippers? and how do they prepare for the NBA draft without a GM?

    • Eric Pincus

The Clippers have a full basketball operations staff and a late second-round pick. I’m not sure the draft is a major concern with no GM – but they may have one by then, in theory.

  99. Jed

    Hey Eric, love your work!
Since everyone knows Pau is gonna get traded, can you voice your thoughts on these possibilities: Gasol for 1) Bargnani +#8, 2) Lowry + scola then scola for t. Evans, 3) Gasol for Wes Matthews +6+11, 4) Lowry+k Martin then Martin to minny for derrick Williams and change.
Also, looking at the cap I can’t help but think the lakers best move is to secure some rookie contract guys, not veteran stars…I hear Lillard is legit and can’t help but think he fits the modern pg role, I think he’d be a great get. Have you heard anything about the lakers trying to get into the draft?

    Thanks!

    • Eric Pincus

This will have to do for the week, I went way over and was just slammed with questions since the moment we started – so thanks, thanks and thanks for coming out. We’ll do it again next week.

      Jed,

Thanks. I’m not sure the Raptors are willing to give up their “best player” and the #8 pick for Gasol. I find that a stretch but that’s a win for the Lakers as Bargnani is a better shooter than Gasol and the eighth pick would add a nice piece. I don’t see it from Toronto’s side.

Lowry and Scola? Perhaps. Scola for Evans? Now why would the Kings do that one? I don’t get that part.

The Blazers are deciding what to do with their team – use the picks and stick with their young coach – or sign a veteran coach and make that kind of trade. I’m thinking Gasol at his age and dollar figure, they don’t go there.

I think #4 has some real possibility, that’s the one I’ve been writing about as my “best guess” – Kevin Martin to Minnesota, Lowry and Williams to LA with Gasol to Houston – with fillers and all that mess. Do I think it will happen? I don’t expect a three-team trade. I never think any trade is ever more than 49% likely and this one isn’t close to 49% but it makes some sense for all three teams.

Finally, as I mentioned, I don’t see the Lakers pushing to get into this draft. I do think when the time comes they may try to get their next “Kobe” in the draft but not this year.
