Welcome to NBA Chat with HOOPSWORLD Senior Writer Eric Pincus. I’ve got all the questions I can handle. Thanks for participating!
Eric covers the L.A. Lakers, Clippers and NBA at large.
Meyers Leonard do you think he will be a productive starting center in the league. possibly a allstar?
Summer time in the NBA, a quiet before the storm? We chat:
Andrew, I don’t see Leonard as an All-Star but of course everyone has potential. He’s athletic and quick for a center but he’s raw. Productive? I don’t think that’s a stretch given time. All-Star? I’m not going that far this early.
Can Jeremy Lamb score with the big boys?
I look at Lamb as similar to his teammate (for now) Kevin Martin. I expect that answer to be yes.
Do you think with Atl losing Joe Johnson they can still make the playoffs?
Hi Eric – What’s h
The eighth letter in the alphabet?
Since Meeks’ agent said that he wouldn’t take the min., do you see the lakers spending their 3m on him?
The Lakers are in no rush to make any moves. There’s that whole Dwight Howard thing too that could come up again. I would look for the Lakers to try to save their Mini MLE through the season – so that if and when a solid player is cut – they’re one of the teams with spending power (which hasn’t been the case in most previous instances). Meeks may never get an offer than impresses him enough to choose against the Lakers but we’ll see. It’s also unclear how badly LA wants him.
Hi Eric – What’s really holding up Howard to Lakers trade? Everybody knows Bynum is going to Houston, prospects and bad contract reliefs to Magic in the process. Why is the delay to the inevitable for the sake of delaying? Thanks
I had a feeling I’d get more from you charlie. The “real” hold up is that the Magic aren’t ready to deal yet. Some of that may have to do with signed first-round picks who need to become available again – which has already happened with Donatas Motiejunas, Tyler Zeller and Dion Waiters. Next up in a few days will be Terrence Jones and then towards the end of August – Jeremy Lamb and Royce White. I can’t say that’s why it’s been quiet – but if any of these players with trade restrictions are instrumental in a deal? Well then naturally there’s a wait and since teams aren’t paid to write and discuss what could and might happen, naturally it’s been quiet.
Hmm, now that Jodie Meeks is now out of the question for Kobe’s backup, who will be left to get: Barbosa? To me, I kinda doubt the Lakers will get him as well, since Kupchak’s extremely reluctant to use the MLE. Do you think the Lakers will add more important pieces to the bench, get Dwight before the end of this month, and would they be the favorites to challenge OKC and possibly Miami Heat?
Hmm, Meeks is out of the question? How is that? Did he sign with another team? It’s important not to take people’s word for what they say – if he is agent says Meeks won’t take the minimum, does that mean ultimately he won’t, guaranteed? Can you know that he’ll get an offer for more? Even if he has an offer right now from more on the table, if he delays is it a guarantee that money is available in 24 hours or 2 weeks or a month? And who is to say the Lakers absolutely won’t use their Mini MLE? I know, via sourced information, they don’t want to use it. Does that mean they won’t? It means they won’t til now – and maybe they won’t period – but it’s all just ifs, buts and maybes. Barbosa – same story. Also note that if the Lakers did get Dwight, they may be taking on Jason Richardson’s contract which would eat up minutes/roster space where someone like Meeks or Barbosa might otherwise fit.
Good Day Senor Pincus Do you prefer Meeks over Barbosa if Lakers were in a position to use the mini mid level?
I don’t particularly care for Barbosa as a fit for Lakers. He can score but mostly with the ball in his hands using his speed – while Meeks is better at catch and shoot which fits LA’s need given their star power. Barbosa should have been a much better defender throughout his career than he proved to be given his speed, quickness and wingspan. Meeks isn’t much of a D guy either. I’m not sure I’d rush to do either, especially for Mini-MLE. I think waiting to use it midseason would make more sense. Look at the Spurs who got Boris Diaw . . .
Which team would you predict Dwight Howard ends up on? And what about a dark horse team?
We all know the discussion. There’s no favorite. I don’t like questions about odds and all that. The Lakers and Rockets appear to be the two teams waiting for a deal but LA would probably need Houston to make it happen via three-way (or possibly Cleveland). I don’t see the Hawks making a run at Dwight. In theory the Nets might be a player if this thing drags on past the season – although I find that too to be a stretch. The Mavericks may be where he ends up if nothing is properly resolved but I don’t see a trade there during the season. The Clippers won’t/can’t trade Blake Griffin (extension) and DeAndre Jordan can block any trade through December 11th I believe. So we wait and see.
Eric-who will be the Clippers 3rd PG behind CP3 and Bledsoe?
Billups – plus spot duty can be held by Jamal Crawford and in a very simple, Randy Foye-like way – Willie Green. Depth at the point is not an issue.
1) If traded, will Andrew Bynum post 20+ points and 10+ Rebs/ game?
2) Are there any buyers for Pau Gasol?
3) Better combo…Lin/Bynum, Lin/Pau?
1) Probably 2) Lakers not really selling 3) For long term success Bynum given Pau’s age.
Eric what you think of this:
ATL gets Bynum, J-rich, Duhon;
ORL-Teague,DM and KevMart(HOU) Raptors lottery pick and ATL draft picks, cap space.
LAL-Howard,Smith and Turkolu.
I think you have an overactive imagination.
If we don’t get pass the first round, what are the likelihood CP3 walk? Is Del Negro a lame duck coach?
If the Clippers make it clear that Del Negro won’t be back – which they haven’t by any stretch – then no, he’s not a lame duck. At this point I expect Paul to stay with the Clippers long-term although nothing is in stone certainly – by any stretch.
Who would be a better head coach Derek Fisher or Luke Walton? Why B-Shaw not a head coach yet?
Shaw will find the right fit – just hasn’t yet. Last check Fisher said he didn’t want to coach whereas Walton has already started work during the lockout as an assistant. I’d say Walton – but if Fisher really wanted to do it? He could be a great coach, I would venture to guess – given his communication skills.
How do you picture this season going for the Pistons? If they catch enough breaks — Drummond developing, Daye getting minutes, Villanueva retiring — could they make a run at the eight-seed?
I see this as another rebuilding year for the Pistons – not a playoff berth – but they’ll be near on the bubble. My take anyway!
You can explain the Amare Stoudamire uninsured contract? Will D12 next team seek an insured contract?
Insurance companies may not take on a player they deem to be high risk. I don’t think Dwight is there at this point.
Where do you see Eric Bledsoe and DeAndre Jordan fitting into Clippers plan?
Will the lakers get Dwight howard and Jodie’s meeks
I don’t know on Howard but Jodie has meeks? What are meeks?
re-watching the playoffs from last year & i’m disgusted at Pau being pushed off the block by al harrington and even more so by ibaka who is a shot blocker not a great position defender.. i’m not buying that Pau will be great with nash, he doesnt set good hard screens. anyway would u trade pau for josh smith while he still has some value? After next season he’ll be labeled old instead of aging. plus some cap relief for us…
You can argue that. It’s certainly the Lakers considered but it appears they’ve gone in the other direction on Gasol.
hey Eric , Ive read a load of negative comments towards George Hill and his 40m/5yr contract. i think its pretty good , hes got skills surpassing many with larger contracts and time to improve plus either the pacers pay up or let hi walk…your thoughts please?
I think they overpaid him. If it was $6 mil a year for 4-years, that’s probably on par with what anyone else would give him. If you want to argue then that he got $40 million instead of $24 million – and that $16 million is enough to get worked up about? I don’t think it is. He’s a solid young player.
will CP3 resign with the clippers or will he test free agency?
I expect both to an extent.
What is going on with Ebanks? Is he not signing with Lakers after all? Or is he still waiting on a possible trade?
At any point Ebanks can just sign off on his offer sheet and be a Laker for one-full year with the ability to block any trade in that duration. Or he can wait and possibly get a bigger deal with another team, notably Orlando. It just makes sense to wait.
Thanks for the chats Eric really enjoy them. What do you make of the Clipper’s still not hiring a general manager? It seems strange that they still haven’t heard of them interviewing anyone. What’s your opinion? Thanks.
The Clippers said they’d look for a general manager after they took care of free agency. It’s summer and a lot of NBA folks are either on vacation or in London for the Olympics. Equally, the Clippers have seemingly done quite well without an official “GM” – so they may just stick with the status quo.
Flash forward, you are writing your first article in the new year 2015. Steve is semi retired, writing occasional articles for Hoops World and Asteroids Inc. and day trading the ETF options market.
In your article you discuss the varied directions of a number of bigs in the very interesting draft of 2012.With your prescient hat in place whats the skinny on Tyler Zeller,Thomas Robinson,Royce White, and Andrew Nicholson.
By 2015, I won’t need to write. I’ll just think and it will be translated for internet consumption. Zeller? Haven’t formed a true opinion on him yet. Want to see him in action first. Robinson can help teams – at worst, like Kenyon Martin – especially if he invests in defense. Love White’s passing – always fun from the forward position. Nicholson has some potential – curious to see who he is playing with.
who is better the knicks r the nets….. Please tell u say the knicks is better other then the backcourt… We have better frontcourt n a much better bench… I think we can be the 2nd best team n the east
It’s close. I’ll say Knicks for now – not because you’re asking – but because that’s how I view it – but it’s tight and very easily could tip to Brooklyn – most notably if Lopez has a bounce-back season.
Eric, Do you think Kobe will ever lace ‘em up for a European franchise?
I’ll go out on a limb and say no, he won’t play a true season overseas – but if ask exhibition? That I could see. Just guessing here.
Logically Dwight has to be traded before the season and LA is the only final destination where Orlando can get a solid, not spectacular return. They are not getting a return similar to what Denver got in the Carmelo trade, as it is too late in the process.
I think the real question is, who is willing to pay Orlando the most for Bynum in either a combination of young cheap players, expiring contracts and draft picks? What is your thought on what Houston or Cleveland will really offer?
At the end of the day, Bynum isn’t going to turn down the 5 year $100M contract, so I think Orlando should also consider taking Bynum.
Even something like Bynum, McRoberts, Filler for Howard & Richardson.
I now that people are sick of talking about this, but I would love to hear what you REALLY think and how this will play out. There is no way that this gets to the trade deadline and NJ is out of the equation.
Huge Lake Fan in South Florida
“Logic” is GM for which team?
Did you hear the Bobcats don’t have an official website? They can’t string three W’s together. Ha!
What’s up Eric, Since Barbosa and Meeks want more money, Why don’t LA sign T-Mac and Redd, LA is looking to fill two spots. Even though they have Ebanks they will still have a backup for 2 and 3 either way and they both can’t get hurt at the same time and all sides of the parties are running out of options.
I’d argue LA needs athletes, speed, toughness, defense and shooting in the backcourt – if they can get it.
Hey Eric, If Meeks was to join the Wizards, I think the Lakers should trade McRoberts for Jordan Crawford since the Wizards already have Beal, What do you think?
I can’t assume the Wizards want McRoberts.
I think JO or KMart should join LA because it could motivate Jordan Hill and Sacre to work harder otherwise he could get too comfortable, what are your thoughts?
Lakers don’t appear interested in JO. Martin would add in a versatile defensive element that would help LA win games. I’m not sold Sacre makes the team. Hill is still playing for a contract, with a short-term deal – that should be his motivation.
Contracts aside, if the Wolves are healthy his year, do you see them dramatically improved this year? They look to be much better defensively with Kirilenko and they should be hitting open jumpers and spreading the floor pretty good for Adelman’s system.
The Wolves, if healthy, will fight on the playoff bubble with a real shot to get into the top eight. I won’t say it’s a lock but they’re solid and well-coached.
Don’t you find it a bit ironic that Lakers hired Jordan to help implement the Princeton offense after having passed on Rick Adelman last year?
My endorsement – which the Lakers did not solicit – was Adelman.
1)Who do you see starting at PG for the KINGS? 2)If Kings wanted to trade Tyreke, who’d be a comparable SF? 3)Would MINN trade Derek Williams for Adelman fav Chuck Hayes and pieces? Thanks.
I penciled in Aaron Brooks on my own little depth chart. I’m not sure who they’ll get for Tyreke – I know they want a lot. I don’t see the Wolves moving Williams for that kind of return.
If Clippers fall short in the playoffs again this season can u see Del Negro maybe taking the GM position to do the media part of the job and the Clippers bringing in playoff tested Jerry Sloan to turn Paul/Griffin into Malone/Stockton?
You can argue that. I think it’s be odd – and if he loves coaching, then no. But if Vinny wants to take a front office job, I think he fits the culture well. Let’s call it a stretch but it’s a scenario that has crossed my mind.
How do you see Blake Griffin’s game evolving next season with his injury this off season? Can we expect much growth if he hasn’t been able to practice as hard with recovery?
He came back full force after the last knee injury. It’s a concern but he may be just fine. Given his explosiveness – I wonder how long he can stay healthy given he’s had a couple of knee injuries already.
What would be the D Howard hold up? Orlando will trade him to: LA or Houston. Golden ST out with Bogut, Dallas has nothing to offer, any other buyers?
I guess Mitch needs to wave the magic wand one more time. Someone looking to land Bynum as a third team (Portland? PHX? ATL) Drew would play for all those teams.
I don’t see the Warriors getting into it.
With billups most likely starting the season injured does it make more sense to start willie green then Jamaal Crawford? L
Not really. Crawford can start and then come off the bench later if need be. Also, Billups insists he’ll be ready for the opener although that may just be wishful thinking.
Eric, how come david lee is sinking in a weak warriors team? I expected him to be a leader but is he past his prime? Or is it because he has a big contract already? He was klove before klove minus the 3point range.
Who has he played with so far? Have the Warriors been healthy? I have high expectations for Golden State this season.
How do you see the clipper small forward spot playing out this year. Can butler hold off Grant hill from playing more minute then him?
I’m not sure on the minute breakdown but Clippers have solid depth.
Give me your clipper lineup that will finish most games?
I’m thinking CP3, Billups, Crawford, Blake, Odom when it comes to needing to score. May be CP3, Bledsoe, Hill, Blake, Odom in defensive situations. I can think of so many variations. Del Negro will have a lot of options.
Hi Eric. Great job on the chats and thanks for answering questions on the twitter. Does the amnesty provision in the new CBA have to be used by a certain date? If so, when does it need to be used by? Thanks.
There’s a brief window in July to use amnesty that has since passed. Won’t be available again until next July.
what is the chances we get barbosa meeks and kenyon martin
Who me and you? Slim. The Lakers? All three? Slim. One of three? Reasonable. Two? Probably kind of slim there too.
The Lakers have made the bench 100% better with Jameson but they still do’t have a “real” backup for Kobe other then the kids…. (Not that is bad to have the kids) They also don’t have a backup for Nash & his bad back unless you allow Morris or one of the new guys to take that role. Lastly they are still stuck with World.
The question is, what will the starting line up be & who will back them up 1st off the bench ???
The question is, what
I would agree the Lakers bench is not deep enough unless some of the kids make major strides – and that’s probably not what you want to bank on heading into the season.
If orlando and d12 agrees to go to the clippz for griffin will the clippz say no? Is the barbosa, meeks ,kenyon martin to the lakers just rumors? Thanks eric for the chatzzzs
I think the league will say no given Blake can’t be dealt for six months – but beyond that Clippers ay no.
Do you see the Clippers making any other moves like adding another Forward or Center or are they set for now? Any updates on the GM vacancy?
Clippers will probably invite some kids to camp but they’re about done – as they should be.
Why do you think Kobe is having such bad time in Olympics? He’s not shooting well at all. Could it be he’s physically tired, which is bad news for the Lakers upcoming season? Or, could it be that he’s just not in the flow of the games becasue of all the talent they have on team USA?
Looks like flow of the game to me. He’s Kobe – sometimes he’ll do too much – sometimes too little as he over-compensates for doing too much.
If Lakers win it all next year, do they still try to trade Gasol?
First instinct is no, if they win it all. Business sometimes gets in the way of that though (Ariza).
Do you see Jamal Crawford as an upgrade for the clippers or was the signing bad for the amount of money he will be making?
Yes and then no to the second question.
Do you have any indications that the Lakers are getting tired of Orlando Magic and Dwight Howard situation and are willing to move on sooner rather than later? I mean the offers for Howard won’t get any better than what the Lakers or the Rockets have on the table now. So why is Orlando dragging this so long. Don’t they need to move on as well and get ready for next season?
If I’m the Lakers, what harm is there in waiting to see if you can land the best center in the league? Because it’s inconvenient. I don’t think convenience is a factor when trying to build a championship team.
Lets assume that Howard WON’T end up with the Lakers. Looking at their roster now, what do you think they need to add for next year? A shooting guard to back Kobe? Or, a better starting small forward? I think MWP would serve the team better if he came off the bench.
If Lakers had one more guard who can defend and hit shots, they’d be fine.
If I’m not mistaking, I heard from Larry Coon that Bynum is NOT going to sign an extention with the Lakers either because he can get much more money (even from the Lakers) once he become a free agent. So why is Bynum camp crying about not having heard from the Lakers regarding any extensions…they’re going to reject it anyway!
Actually Larry said it would make more financial sense for Bynum to sign an extension and time the contracts throughout the rest of his career based on higher maximums – and locking in a long-term deal before the CBA could expire. But as smart as Larry is – it’s no guarantee Bynum and his people are on that same wavelength.
If Kenyon Martin is brought in for the Lakers… Should we expect someone like Ebanks or Eyenga or someone else to not be brought back?
Eyenga is under contract. Ebanks can be back at his whim at this point.
Now dat the bucks hav joel prz who do u see them trading??? I say gooden and sanders is gone….. Whats ur thoughts??
I’m not sure it means anyone is about to be dealt.
Do you expect Kobe’s efficiency to increase next season now that they have nash? I don’t think his points per game will increase (actually they might go down to low 20′s), but I think his shooting % will improve drastically from low 40′s (last year) to cloer to 50%. Nash can and will give a lot of easy and open shots.
Kobe should be more efficient but that’s no lock given the adjustment he’ll have to make off the ball.
Although George Karl keeps saying he likes the Nuggets roster as it is lots of Nuggets fans are hoping some of the young pieces can be traded for something closer to an all-star. When was the last time a small market town, like Denver, was able to trade for an all-star by giving up numerous, less talented pieces?
Market-size rarely has much to do with trade opportunities – especially if they go after the right star who has some time left on his contract.
The Suns made some moves to keep them competitive this next year. Do you think this was smart in their rebuilding process or should they have continued saving their money to allow their own players to develop with the understanding that their poor record over the next few years would land them a few top picks?
I think putting together a team with the chance to win some games is the right move. Going awful is a miserable experience and rarely does it pay off quickly.
very briefly, can you explain the Princeton offense? I mean what should we expect to see next year from the Lakers compared to last year’s system or even the triangle offense?
Very, very briefly – it’s a read and react, motion offense – so think triangle offense but different.
Isnt the likely reason that the Howard trade to LA has not gone down, the 30 day freeze on rookie’s (assuming Houston or Cleavland is in the mix)?
I think that’s a factor – even if it’s not the specific reason – but it impacts the market. If teams can’t make competing offers because they have unavailable players – it may impact the final negotiation. So delay.
Do you think the Olympics will help or hurt Bryant and Gasol for the start of next season? Will they be tired? The world championship a couple of years ago really helped Odom to be in great shape all year, but I’m not sure what we can expect from Kobe and Pau.
I don’t think it hurts – unless they get hurt. Players spend the summer working out in worse conditions on their own.
Did Ramon Sessions signed with any team? Do you think he will regret not picking up his option with the Lakers for the next year? Not that it would have any impact on the Lakers getting Nash, but I think he would have been a much better back up for Nash than Steve Blake.
Bobcats and probably.
Can someone explain why Eddy Curry has a team but Brian Cardinal doesn’t?
Curry doesn’t have a team.
Your gut feeling, do the Rockets end up with one of the centers (Bynum, Howard) when the season begins?
I would they say have a reasonable chance given the quantity of young assets, picks, etc. that they have to offer.
How likely is it that this is Pau’s final year with the Lakers? Will they amnesty him before the 2013-2014 season?
I don’t see amnesty as the path for LA and Pau.
Which game would you watch lakersVclips or netsVknicks if you could only watch one ?
I live in LA and have no plans to travel to New York any time soon. So I’ll say LA. I do want to visit NY but waiting til the kids get a little older and things settle.
Why did the Rockets sign their rookies instead of keeping them unsigned for a possible Dwight trade? Was there a deadline?
Well one aspect that has changed – if those players are to be included in a trade – now their salary would be involved in a deal. Unsigned they count as $0. It just means a 30-day delay which is nothing at this point in the offseason.
How do you project Steve Nash’s stats next year? I think his point will go up since the Lakers have no one else who can shoot from outside. Also his assists should remain high too if not best in the league. With Kobe, Pau, and Bynum or Howard receiving his passes, I think he’ll do really good assist-wise.
I’m not really much on predicting stats but he’ll have plenty of players to pass to and should get open looks. It may or may not mean a jump in stats.
Any word on how the Lakers feel about Steve Blake as their backup PG this year?
Are they looking to upgrade
He’s better than some options – worse than others. Lakers don’t have a lot of flexibility here.
Can’t believe the Clippers have more televised games then the Lakers, is this a turn of a new era in Los Angeles especially with Kobe considering retirement within a few years?
I expect both teams to have equal number of national games by the end of the season once NBA TV finishes the fan voting for games.
A really funny thing I noticed on NBA.TV over the week-end was the replay of Lakers-Knicks game from last year when Jeremy Lin had a great game. They called it “Hardfloor Classics”. That to me is really ridiculous. A hardfloor classis should be an epic game between Magic and Bird or Bulls vs Pistons, or Wilt vs Russell. But Jeremy Lin??? Give me a break!
That was a great game.
Anyone looking to pick up Derek Fisher? The Lakers looked like they could of used him in the playoffs. Any chance he comes back?
I expect Fisher to end up on a playoff team – I’d be surprised if it’s Lakers but then I’ve been surprised before.
Can the Lakers offer a 2017 1st round pick in potential Howard deal?? Since they’ve give 2013 n 2015 to the Suns.
Is it true that there is a 4 team trade in the works between the Timberwolves, Cavs,Lakers and Magic that will bring Dwight Howard to Lakers? Do you think it will go down?
Haven’t heard of such a thing. Do you have a link? This may come as a shock, but apparently people make up a lot of stuff on the internet. I know, it’s crazy. If there’s something, I’d need to trace it to the very source of where it came from.
How well will Nash “fit in” to the Princeton offense? Is this the right system for him?
You can argue pro/con – but Jason Kidd ran the Princeton to two-straight NBA Finals while dishing quite a few assists.
First i wana say please send your prayers to the Philippines for the strong rains are already flooding manila. My question E, do the nba really need a rivalry ala bird and magic again hence the new air jordan commercial is indicating? I wish its lebron and kd. Enough of too much love fest and beggin becoming the next best rivals, your take??
Prayers sent. The league love rivalries and they are always evolving.
Under new CBA, newly drafted players can’t be traded until 30 days after signing. Houston signed Lamb, White and Jones on July 26th. The Lakers are taking their time filling out thier roster and Mitch has said he hasn’t signed Ebanks in case he has to take back players in a trade. This makes me think a 3-way between HOU, LA, and ORL is already in place, just waiting for those deadlines to pass so those guys can be sent to ORL. Especially since it’s been so quiet- which is usually a sign that Mitch is up to something… You think this is plausible?
If you think something is “in place,” you’re reaching. Nothing is agreed to. Possibilities and paths exist but nothing yet. It could end up that way in the end but agreed to now? Nah.
What is your gut feeling about Dwight Howard getting traded to the Lakers?? Do you think he will be a Laker?? I always enjoy your insights. Keep up with the good job…
I would argue – that if Dwight’s back injury does not hamper him – he’s a better player for the Lakers than Bynum. Beyond that, I’ve pretty much said all there is to be said on Howard in this here chat.
Love your stuff. I know the lakers want to see how Pau does with Nash that aside and not that they are going to trade him but in your opinion would he be more valuable this year or next year?
Thx – Lakers want to see what it looks like with Pau/Nash. Beyond that we’ll have to wait and see how well it works out – and what other opportunities come up in trade.
Are the Timberwolves a top 5 seed this year? They had success against the clippers last year, and played good teams very tough and that was with maybe the worst wings in the league.
I have Wolves in 6-10 range.
WHO WILL CLEVELAND SIGN IN FREE AGENCY …….BARBOSA?
Will waiters be a bust
CJ Miles I believe. I haven’t seen enough of Waiters yet to call him a bust. I don’t think he’ll be a steal like Damian Lillard.
Nets looking to make more moves? And what do you think their fan base will be like for the next decade?
Just minimum signings. I hope Brooklyn gets behind the team. They have a really interesting roster.
Yo eric are u or have u been a sneakerhead? Whats your favorite shoes?
I’m wearing a dirty pair of K-Swiss. I’m thinking that tells you enough.
Could the lakers use their mini midlevel in a sign and trade?
Who else besides Meeks or Barbosa can the Lakers realistically get to back up Kobe?
Well Darius Johnson-Odom, Andrew Goudelock, Devin Ebanks and Steve Blake are obviously all realistic options. Beyond that it depends on Howard trade – maybe Jason Richardson – or free agency Meeks/Barbosa. I’m not going to call anything likely but what LA already has on the roster.
In my opinion, Laker fans generally overvalue their players moreso than any other team. Is that a fair statement?
I find most fans over-value their players. The hard part with Laker fans is telling them what Mitch Kupchak can’t do – when he got Gasol for Kwame – Nash for some picks – Ariza for Brian Cook, etc. It’s Mitch’s fault and Laker fans tend to be grateful for that.
What do you think the clippers do with Travis Leslie? Do they cut him sign Malcolm Thomas and adam Morrison to non Guaranteed contracts?
Leslie is probably a camp invite. If I’m Thomas or Morrison, Clippers would be a near-last resort. Young players like Thomas – or Morrison as a vet trying to get back in the league – they need to go somewhere they might actually play. Clippers are too deep.
Eric, do you see the Lakers losing in on one of the free agents they have been targetting (Meeks and Barbosa) because they’re waiting for the Dwight deal?
The Lakers don’t mind missing out. There’s always someone else to go after later – be it in trade, or mid-season the waiver wire. Are Meeks and Barbosa that significant to LA’s plan? Not enough to feel pressure.
When do you think dwight gets traded?
I’ll say before the season but the Magic will wait if they have to. There’s just a lot more flexibility during the offseason when some teams have cap – and there’s not 15-man roster limit.
I keep hearing from a lot of people, you included, that the Lakers may hold on to the mini mid-level so they can use it during the season if/when some players will be available, but I don’t really know what kind of players you’re talking about. I can’t remember any solid players, worth the mini mid-level being released during the season. Can you please clarify that or give me some examples over the last couple of years where some solid players have been released?
Last year the names were J.R. Smith, Kenyon Martin, Boris Diaw. Each solid guys – veterans who can help – are cut. Often they’re looking for a chance to win a ring – get minutes – and get the most $. Lakers are rarely on the list of teams with money to offer.
Do you think Morey has plans with the rest of his roster, should he acquire an allstar big man, or is the goal to be in position to put together a competitive squad next summer?
This will have to do for the week. Thanks again – enjoyed the questions!
I look at the rockets with their 20 players under contract and I think – yeah they probably need a trade. The contracts of Shaun Williams, Shaun Livingston, Greg Smith, Courtney Fortson, Diamon Simpson and Josh Harrellson are either non or partially guaranteed. I think Houston has some nice young prospects but I don’t see everything adding up to a cohesive squad that’s going to be a major force in the West.
For Houston to get out of the 8-12 range in the West, they need to add high-level players and they’re not there yet. Bynum or Howard would change the dynamic significantly. I know that Morey wants to make a big splash like that. The question is can he? And how much will it cost.
I expect there will be another push before this is all over this summer for the Rockets to land one of the two potentially available centers.
