Lang Greene is a NBA Writer for HOOPSWORLD covering the Atlanta Hawks and Eastern Conference. Lang’s chat gets started at 8pm EST every Wednesday.
I have no idea why people are calling Marc Gasol a snub from the all NBA defensive first team. The DPOY is voted by the media who couldn’t spell basketball (i.e. gave Luc Babbit a vote for 6th man of the year). The All-NBA first team is picked by the 30 coaches, who actually understand who the best defensive players are. I’m not saying Marc Gasol isn’t great, just not the best. The vote by the coaches proves this. Agree or disagree.
What’s up Hoop Freaks? Hope you’re enjoying the playoffs. Some good round ball going on if you’re paying attention. Plenty of guys stepping up and a plethora of guys wilting under the pressure. Let’s get to it …
You do understand when you talk about the media not being able to spell “basketball” you’re lumping me into this broad statement as well (even though I don’t have a vote for these awards)? I think there are certain truths to what you’re saying, but you’re not entirely right. Most beat writers I come across have a strong understanding of the subtle nuisances of the game overall. Very solid basketball knowledge. But some of the national guys who spend some of their time covering other sports may not be as well studied. But those guys also do a lot of prep work to get up to speed.
So consider this … Tyson Chandler was voted as DPOY last year but the coaches voted him second team all-defensive team. This year Marc Gasol wins DPOY and Chandler gets a first team nod … I think Chandler had a much stronger year last season. Plus he missed 16 games this year. Looks to me the coaches slipped last year.
My point is … if you look close enough there will always be room for debate.
With the examples of Marc Gasol and Luc Babbit, one may argue the NBA needs more transparency in the voting process to make the media members more responsible for their picks. A suggestion would be to make each members vote public. Imagine the backlash/loss of credibility to the poor sap that picked Luc Babbit for 6th man of the year. If this vote was public it would discourage ridiculous votes such as this as they would be carved by their peers and/or not be allowed to vote the following year. Agree or disagree with this proposal?
You have a good point, but I’m not one for revamping an entire system, whatever the realm, because of one isolated vote (person, incident, etc). I think that would be knee jerk. Now if multiple vote holders begin to make silly picks then I would be more in favor to make things public.
Is the report true that Pierce won’t be back next season?
At this point the Celtics must at least give thought to the idea of moving on from the Paul Pierce era. The veteran is on the books for $15.3 million in 2014, but only $5 million is guaranteed. This contract would make Paul a pretty attractive option around the league for teams looking to create space. If the Celtics keep Pierce around they will be over the luxury tax, assuming Kevin Garnett returns and doesn’t retire.
I think Boston can make another run at the playoffs next year with a healthy Rajon Rondo back in the field … but their championship window is officially closed and this may be the time to move on and start fresh.
I am loving PG’s all around work for Indiana, but what is with his shooting numbers? Can he fix it?
Paul George is still a very young player and teams are throwing the kitchen sink at him. The Atlanta Hawks put the physically stronger Josh Smith on him and wore him down. In the series versus New York, he has been guarding the league’s scoring champion Carmelo Anthony. He’s still putting up a steady stat line and most importantly the Pacers are winning impressively in the process.
The shots will eventually fall, but this is a big time learning experience for PG going forward and so far he is passing the test.
Jabari Parker or Andrew Wiggins?
Interesting question. I need to see more from both before I anoint either of them. On the surface I would say Andrew Wiggins … he is explosive, has size and seemingly can do whatever he wants on the court. But when I look at Jabari Parker … man, I just see a polished product who also already knows how to work with the media as well. That’s important. I go Wiggins right now, but the separation isn’t by much … Parker has impressed.
Greetings from Romania, Lang!
Who would you rather have on your team: DeAndre Jordan or Omer Asik? What do you see as a realistic way of improving for the Clippers this summer? Would bringing in a better coach but the same group of guys be enough to get them closer to the Conference Finals?
Also, I know you’re also a boxing guy, who do you like between Lucas Matthysse and Lamont Peterson this weekend?
Greeting my man!
It’s tough to say because it all depends on what type of team you have. Jordan has more flash and gets the crowd going but Asik is a scrapper who does the dirty work to keep you in games.
He would be perfect in Atlanta next to Al Horford in the frontcourt. His presence would allow Horford to play more of an outside game and slide to his natural position. DeAndre wouldn’t be as strong a fit next to Al.
The Clippers are close to getting to the next level, but they need Blake Griffin to take the next step in his development. He gets the hype but we saw in the playoffs this season that Zach Randolph gives him all sorts of problems.
Matthysse is a dangerous match up for Peterson because of his punching power. But I’m going with Lamont. I think he’s slick enough to eke out a narrow decision.
Do you expect this summer to feature a daily Sportcenter special called “The InDecision” covering the fact that Dwight’s inability to announce his return to the Lakers leaves the rest of free agency in limbo?
Lol. Well played my man. Good stuff.
Please let me know what you think of the scenario.
Chris Paul tells the Clippers that he’s leaving but he’ll do a sign and trade so the Clips won’t be left empty handed. Paul goes to Houston. Asik, Lin, Parsons or picks go to LA. Then, Howard leaves the Lakers to join Paul and Harden in Houston and form the next big three.
It could happen, right? Then maybe the Clippers send Bledsoe, Jordan, picks or Butler to Boston for Rondo.
Honestly, lots of stuff here for a chat session. Too many moving parts. I can’t see this scenario playing out. Maybe in 2k13.
What’s up Lang? Haven’t asked a question on here in a while but who do you think Atlanta is targeting with that mountain of cap room other than Howard? Jefferson, Mayo, Millsap, Iguodala, Pekovic, Ellis, etc?
Word is Danny Ferry is going to make a run at Chris Paul. I don’t see a scenario where Paul leaves the Clippers but Atlanta will be in pursuit.
What’s up Brother Lang? Who do you think ends up with the Hawks HC position? I like SVG and also the assistant with the Spurs. Thoughts?
Spurs assistant Mike Budenholzer will probably get a look because Ferry has familiarity with him from there time together in San Antonio. A report said Danny Ferry’s former Duke teammate Quin Snyder might also get a look as well. I think Nate McMillan might get a preliminary call.
Back in 2010 three guys got together in Miami. No one saw it coming. I’ve got the feeling that something along those same lines might happen in ATL,D12,Horford and CP3.Thoughts?
That is Atlanta’s dream scenario. A powerful move. But I have it on good authority that Chris Paul is staying in Los Angeles and to this date I have heard anything to make me believe Howard is ready to come back home to Atlanta.
Could you see the Hawks making a run at someone like DeMarcus Cousins or Kevin Love if they were to be put on the trading block?
No on DeMarcus Cousins. Hawks are trying to build a certain culture and DMC just requires too much maintenance. I also can’t see them making a run at Kevin Love. Not because of his character, because he’d fit there, but the Hawks already have Horford who has won more as a professional since entering the league.
Do you think the Bobcats should take a chance on Bynum? Not a full max but maybe a 2 year large deal. He would give them downlow presence (if he plays) and help with rebounding and points in the paint. Worst case we pay him for 2 years while we are really bad for Wiggins Parker or whomever next year. Best case he is a franchise player and a top 3 center in the league. If we got him who would you draft Noel Mcelmore or _____?
I mean if you’re the Bobcats, what do you really have to lose? The team is struggling badly so why not throw a two-year $18 million deal out there and see if the former All-Star bites.
I’d probably go Nerlens Noel w/ the top pick, but McLemore (and Otto Porter) could be the best overall talent at the end of the day.
Lang, what’s up? Haven’t talked to you for a while but love your chats!!!
What do the Celtics do with PP? All Celtics fans want to see him back. But, I just can’t see them bringing him back at his salary and no chance to contend. Spending to win is one thing but not to be mediocre. Most of the local media are convinced he gone.
Are there any trades out there for him that make sense?
Or should the Celts buy him out so he can chose his own team.
They buyout also makes sense in that the avoid they luxury tax, can use the full MLE and give JG a better role.
Thanks Lang, see ya next time.
Good hearing from you. Sort of addressed this a bit earlier … I think it may be time to part ways with Paul. Worst case, you get a healthy Rondo back and make another playoff run … but the title window has been slammed shut.
Now that the Hawks post season is over:
1. Josh Smith – stay or go?
2. Dwight Howard?
3. If the Hawks are unable to land a TOP free agent – what does Ferry do? Does he blow the cap space on the next tier of players or build slowly through the draft, trade and next FAgcy?
4. Who should the Hawks be looking at to Draft and what are the possibilities of moving up?
5 Thoughts on SVG as the next coach? Do you think LD might be back?
1. I think Smoove is gone, but wouldn’t be surprised to see him back on a shorter deal.
2. No plans to come back to Atlanta from what I hear. Hawks will place a call when free agency opens
3. Ferry has told me numerous times he is not going to spend just to spend. He valued Joe Johnson and moving him was a tough decision, so they plan on using the cap not just for free agency but for potential trades as well
4. Gorgui Dieng kid from Louisville would be a good PF/C prospect
5. LD won’tr be back but he will get another shot in the league. I think SVG would pass on the Hawks right now.
do you think nba will cheat bobcats 2 year in a row and not give them the #1 pick i see them picking Ben McLemore #1 i think he will be the next dwade
Lower your expectations a bit on McLemore. I don’t see a D-Wade type trajectory. I would say more in the Eric Gordon (pre-injury), but a little lesser, range if he maximizes his potential.
What’s up, Lang! Got an A. Bynum question…what is his likely destination. Despite how disastrously it worked out for the Sixers last year, I’m afraid they almost HAVE to re-sign the guy, given what they gave up. Your thought on his future, besides needing a new ‘do stylist, I mean…
The Sixers swung for the fences and gave up so much for Bynum that you would think they would be a lock to bring him back to see it through … but Philadelphia has said they are going to treat Andrew like any other free agent on the market this summer. Should be fun to see how this develops
Lang: It looks like Howard and CP3 is Ferry’s Plan A. Though it would be nice, I don’t see it happening. I also do not think Howard comes to ATL without Smith being here as well. And Smith and Howard together means lots of missed FTs.
What do you think Plan B is? Much has been said about Splitter, Jefferson, Evans and Mayo. How about a lineup of the following:
Jefferson, Horford, Korver, Evans (Tyreke) and Teague.
You’re right on the money as usual Mark.
Ferry’s plan A is to lure CP3 and D12 to Atlanta. But much like you, I don’t see it happening. Both guys are not leaving $20+ million a piece on the table to leave Los Angeles in their 20s to come to Atlanta.
I don’t see Tyreke Evans … I could see a run made at Al Jefferson, but it depends on cost. Ferry won’t overspend for him.
Hypothetically, Carmelo Anthony is in the 2014 NBA draft. Do you select him over Andrew Wiggins?
Yes. Without a doubt. I think Carmelo was more NBA ready. Jury still out on Wiggins, though I believe he will meet the hype.
Who could you see as the next head coach for Philly with this new analytical gm in place?
Quite sure B. Shaw will get a strong look once the Pacers’ season is over.
Where do you see Shabazz Muhammed getting picked and where
Draft express has him going No. 10 to the Blazers. I can see the 76ers giving him an eye if he’s still on the board.
What happens if the Suns want to waive Michael Beasley. Do they have to pay his salary in full, or a certain percentage?
Yes. His contract is fully guaranteed. Suns would have to pay him. That’s why you see teams try to trade their unwanted assets. Franchises don’t want to pay a guy to go find work elsewhere.
The Knicks and the Thunder show that you can’t win it all with just shooting jumpers. Look at Indiana and Memphis, dominating the boards, every game different player steps up.. am i crazy to think that Pacers vs Grizzlies will be the final?
Grizzlies can make it to the Finals but I think Miami has just a little too much for Indiana to emerge in the Eastern Conference Finals.
Lets play the if game, if the heat dont win this year do you see any of the big 3 traded or just a reload? And lastly is serge ibaka and perkins over rated because of the great kd n westbrook?
No, the big three are safe. Miami isn’t giving that tandem up.
Serge Ibaka is a great defender and rim protector, but he really needs to develop an inside post game. Too much loitering on the perimeter. He tries to model his game, seemingly, after Chris Bosh … but Bosh has decent skills on the low block to go along with his mid range game.
Can Fab Melo crack the rotation for the C’s next season? They always say, “you can’t teach size.” (whoever THEY are…)
If Fab Melo is playing more than 15 minutes per game next season, the Celtics would officially be in rebuild mode.
