Straightforward question: would the Lakers be better off long term not investing tens of millions of dollars in Dwight Howard? I’m sure they will offer him a max contract, but if he does opt to leave, would it be a blessing in disguise for LA? In my (admittedly biased and possibly unfair) opinion, Dwight is nothing but a glorified DeAndre Jordan / Tyson Chandler. I would rather have Marc Gasol on my team any day of the week…
What’s up Hoop Freaks? Hope you are enjoying your week and the playoffs. Going to kick this off w/ some prime LL Cool J tonight. I’m Bad .. before the millions. Before the fame …

Let’s go …
Straightforward answer … I think you can make a case for the angle you’re thinking. There are plenty of people who think the D12 and Lakers marriage won’t turn out to be a successful one. But here’s the deal … why not re-sign him and then trade him in a season or two if things head south? I don’t see a boatload of big men on the horizon who will decrease his value, so he’ll still be in demand. The problem with just letting him walk out the door is you lose an asset you could potentially flip down the road for picks and assets in the event things don’t work out.
But I do disagree with your assessment of his talent level. DJ and Tyson, while good players, are not in Dwight’s league.
Lang, If Coach Budenholzer were to be hired by the Hawks, what can he bring to the franchise and does that increase their chances of landing Dwight, and maybe (longshot) CP3? Or even keep Josh Smith?
You got this one in before the news broke, but I am still going to answer it …
I wrote about it earlier today … a little bit of perception versus reality. CHECK IT HERE. The perception was Larry Drew wasn’t a championship level coach, while the reality shows he was a damn good coach who produced playoff runs. Now the perception surrounding Budenholzer is that he brings he a championship pedigree to the team, while the reality of it all is he will be a rookie head coach come the fall.
But, yes, the hire was a good one and guys around the league will take note when evaluating the Hawks in free agency.
Bobcats sign a no-namer coach in Steve Clifford. Suns sign a no-namer (in the coaching world) in Hornacek. Bucks are likely to sign Kelvin Sampson. Alvin Gentry, Larry Drew, Mike Dunlap, Mike Vogel, Mark Jackson – all coaches who have been signed who have little or no head coaching experience with Brian Shaw still available. How come he hasn’t gotten a head coaching gig yet? For a guy who was once touted as the heir to Jackson’s throne, I’m curious to what has happened…do you have any insight? Thanks!
Honestly, I think Shaw’s past affiliation with Phil Jackson (and the Triangle Offense) is one of the things which has hurt him in securing a head coaching job. There are a lot of people around the league who doubt the effectiveness of the Triangle offense outside of Phil, MJ and Kobe.
What suggestions would you give to the knicks, nets, lakers and clippers to get better this off season? Who has the best chance to reach the finals next year?
Out of those teams, I believe the Los Angeles Clippers have the best shot to reach the Finals next season. They have a potent one-two punch in CP3 (assuming he re-signs) and Blake Griffin along with a capable bench. Brooklyn just doesn’t have the extra gear if you ask me. That team losing to a depleted Chicago Bulls team tells you all you need to know about their mentality. The Knicks will win a lot of games next season but Carmelo needs help. Tyson Chandler is starting to slip. Amar’e hasn’t been Amar’e in about three years. Jason Kidd is basically done. JR Smith is too much of a wildcard. In regards to the Lakers I just can’t pencil them in anywhere with an aging Steve Nash, injured Kobe Bryant and mentally unsure Pau Gasol.
Sign-and-trade options for Tyreke Evans seem very slim. What are your ideas on this? How do you feel about a back court of Holiday/Evans in Philly, with Richardson and Moultrie going to the Kings? If Evans simply walks, the Utah Jazz the smartest move for him?
I like Jason Richardson, but at this stage of his career I wouldn’t trade for him. Especially as the head of a front office and especially not for a prime asset.
I think Evans has a bright future, but he needs to go to a place where he can just play … where a role is clearly defined.
Lang my brother! What’s happenin ?
So the spurs rolled the Grizz. Didn’t see that comin at all. I least thought the grizz would show a bit of fight on their own turf! What happened? Where the Spurs and TimmyD just to
strong? To well oiled?
I think the Grizz need another goto scorer. ‘specially on the wing! Tayshaun is a nice player, but he can’t drop a 20
on ya in a pinch anymore! Do you think the Grizz can somehow someway grab Paul Pierce from the Celts? Personally that would
be an amazing fit! Another vet in the locker and just a guy you can turn to in the clutch! What ya thoughts?
Thanks again for your time. Great site. Great writers! I’ll be sure to keep comin to this space regular to ask more!
I think Memphis finally rolled up on a tight unit and couldn’t get their rhythm back. In the first round they played the Clippers who were coming a part in their own locker room with players questioning each other, Blake Griffin’s injury and a coach in the midst losing the team. Against OKC the Grizzlies played a team searching for its identity after losing their emotional leader in Russell Westbrook.
The Spurs are a different animal and I just don’t think the Grizzlies were tested enough in the first two rounds to overcome a team with championship level experience.
What are the Blazers most likely going to do this off season. Draft SG or C, trade the pick and asset for Veteran? I think we should go after Jefferson, draft Pope and do what is necessary to bring back Hickson. What’s your thoughts about our possibilities. If you draft a Center would you go Len or Zeller?
The Blazers have been vocal about their desire to add a defensive minded center. I think that would rule out Al Jefferson, but I’m sure he’ll get a look. I think the Blazers go big in the draft. The name who may be available when they pick at No. 10 is Alex Len, possibly Cody Zeller.
If C.J. McCollum is on the board, I think the combo guard will get a strong look.
Personally, I would go Alex Len. I watched him absolutely work Nerlens Noel this past season and became a fan of his game.
I read an article where James Jones was not thinking retirement anymore and would opt to return and pick up his player option for 2013-14, which leads me to believe Ray Allen, and most probably Rashard Lewis will also do especially if Miami win the championship (unless he’s content with that one ring and retires). Miami I would expect to pick up Chalmers $4million too. So I guess my question would be, how many of those role players would be content with winning a championship (2nd for those who were there last season) and then moving on or retiring? Would Haslem and Chalmers look to move on and be paid. Miller, Allen, Jones, Howard, Birdman, Battier move on or retire after getting what they wanted? In a way it seems Miami would be built around the Big 3 once again with Cole as the PG this time. This could be scary….
I spoke with James toward the end of the season and he told me retirement would definitely be an option if the HEAT repeat as champions. Now, he recently told my man Chris T that he had no plans to retire at all so I believe the truth is somewhere in between. I think his mind is constantly changing on the subject.
You can read my interview with James here …
With teams gearing towards the 2014 free agency. One team I don’t hear being talked is the Golden State Warriors. Bogut, Biedrins, and Jefferson all come off the books. That’s 30 mil off their books with just those 3 players alone. Was wondering, if all the names do hit free agency in 2014, who could the Dubs pursue? I personally would pull for Chris Bosh. Him along side Lee, Klay, Curry, Barnes. Wow! Thanks Lang!
You’re right. Golden State could definitely be a big player during the summer of 2014. The team will have just $25 million in guaranteed salaries for the 2015 season on the books. I think the team should look center … force a team like Detroit to pay Greg Monroe huge. Maybe even a guy like Kenneth Faried. Both guys will likely be restricted, but man … the Warriors could definitely be players. Good point.
It seems danny ferry does his job well….he got rid of joe johnson marvin williams and possibly josh smith. We really needed a new team all together. Do you think we can attract players now because of ferrys moves including the signing of Coach Bud? Also do you think we will get some talent from the draft with our picks???
Danny Ferry is on his “A” game. No doubt about. From trading Joe and Marvin. To trading for Kyle Korver. To signing Lou Williams on a very economical deal. Everything he has done up until now has been on point . Even the head coaching hire of Budenholzer looks strong on paper. This is a big summer for the team though so we’ll see if Ferry can keep his magic act up. The team has just three player guaranteed for 2013-14 so we’ll see how good Ferry is at attracting talent to Atlanta relatively soon.
Hi Lang! First time to ask in a while so here goes:
Jeff hornacek of the suns and mike b. of the hawks: What kind of coach are these teams getting? What would their coaching philosophy emphasize on?
Eric … welcome to the Hoop Freaks!
I don’t know much about Hornacek as a coach, but he was the ultimate competitor as a player man. I respected that guy. I expect his offense to be tightly structured with plenty of screens and getting guys the ball on the low block.
With Budenholzer I am expecting a strong emphasis on defense and I expect him to push Jeff Teague (assuming he re-signs) to become more of an attacker, more aggressive getting into the lane … much like Tony Parker. I’m excited to see it, because I think Jeff has that extra gear in him … but just needs someone to push it
Hello Lang, Serious question. Why doesn’t Jimmy Butler get as much hype as Paul George? Just going by the eye test (I haven’t look at the stats for the playoffs), but i thought Jimmy Butler did a better job guarding LeBron and he also was more assertive and effective on the offensive end in the Bulls series vs. the Heat. I’m not trying to take anything away from George but he also does some bone headed plays at the end of games and doesn’t seem assertive. On the other hand Butler was very clutch and poised when defending LeBron and he attached the basket. What gives, why does George get all the shine and Butler doesn’t? In my opinion they are very similar players.
Paul George is a level above Jimmy Butler right now. The man has held his own versus Josh Smith, Carmelo Anthony and now LeBron James. His impact isn’t just on the defensive end either … how any fouls has he drawn against LeBron and Dwyane Wade in the Eastern Conference Finals? When is the last time you remember LeBron and D-Wade being in so much foul trouble?
Jimmy is a nice player but he doesn’t have the expectations PG has on his shoulders.
Langy Lang, what’s up my man?
My usual handful of questions:
1. Thoughts on the ‘Bud’ hire? I like I a lot
2. With the hiring of ‘Bud’ does it change Ferry’s approach to the possibilities of getting D12 or CP3?etter, worse, Status Quo?
3. Will Josh Smith be a Hawk? I ask you this every week, lol.
4. What is the possibility of moving up in the draft
5. Will Teague be a Hawk?
What’s up J?
1. On paper, solid. We’ll see if he can transition from co-pilot to pilot. But on surface, I like it.
2. I think Danny is still going tot try to bring in both guys. They have the cap room, they will pursue the top guys and see if anyone bites.
3. The more time goes by, the more I believe Josh Smith will be playing elsewhere in 2013-14
4. Hawks have just three guys under guaranteed contract for next season. Al Horford, Low Williams and John Jenkins. I don’t think they have the assets to move up into the high lottery.
5. Yes. Unless Ferry can lure CP3, then Jeff Teague will be wearing an Atlanta uniform next season.
What good with you Lang, been a little busy with school, but I’m back. Lets get it started with another 3
1. Does the new head man for the Hawks Looks attractive to free agents
2. Josh Smith, is this the coach for him (if he stay’s)
3 What do you think about Al Jefferson and CP3 compared to Dwight and CP3 if the hawks were able to pull this off
The original 3Q!!! I’ve been wondering where you’ve been. Hope all is going well … let’s bang it out
1. Even before Ferry hired Budenholzer, free agents were telling us that Atlanta was fast becoming an attractive destination. I think Budenholzer adds another notch to the belt
2. No. I expect to see Josh in a different uniform next season
3. I like it, but you won’t get CP3 to come to Atlanta with the promise of playing with Al Jefferson. You will get him to take a hard look with Dwight Howard and Al Horford.
Hypothetically, if Miami doesn’t win the title the next two years, can you see the big 3 breaking up? If it happens, could see a real shot that Lebron bolts?
I don’t think LeBron bolts anywhere, especially if the team continues to make ECFs. I do think if any of the big three’s future is in question it would be Chris Bosh because of economics
My Pacers seem to be holding their own, but where has Paul George gone?
Guarding LeBron James has a habit of making people disappear somewhat. But look at all the fouls he’s drawing on LeBron and D-Wade. He’s still been effective, just not dominant .. there’s a difference.
The more I watch Lance Stephenson the more I think he can be an All-Star in the NBA. What are your thoughts on him? He reminds me a lot of a younger D-Wade.
No. I don’t see All-Star for Lance. I’m glad he has come into his own, but that is just too high of an expectation for the young fella. I can see him taking a Tony Allen (defensive) trajectory if he focuses on locking guys up. At the very high end, maybe a Stephen Jackson type but with lower stat lines … a 15/6/3 type guy.
what you think about a line up of
SG kevin martin
SF Sergey Karasev
PF AL horford
C D howard
Hey I like it, but I doubt the Hawks can get both CP3 and Dwight Howard. If they do, then Danny Ferry would go legend here in Atlanta.
Do you think the Indiana Pavers should consider having Danny Granger be their sixth man next year. This would allow Paul George to continue to be their small forward and Lance Stephenson to continue to grow next year. The Pavers could use some instant offense off the bench next year.Do you think this could be their missing link to win a title if they don’t win it this year
Sure. But does Danny truly want to take a sixth man role? It has been his team so long in Indiana and some guys don’t take a backseat easy. Danny is focused on getting healthy and coming back to play major minutes. I don’t think his mind, as a competitor, is thinking “let me come back and pay 20 minutes per night”
Hello Lang, love your basketball mind. What is your opinion of the contract values Tyreke Evans & Andrei Kirilenko will merit this off season.?
Kirilenko told me earlier this season he was opting in for next season So I don’t believe he will hit free agency.
I think Tyreke will secure a $8-10 million per year deal this summer. Lots of potential.
Some conspiracy theorists have suggested the NBA didn’t suspend Dwayne Wade for that dirty elbow as NBA Final ratings will be the biggest with the Heat in the finals versus the Paces. Therefore they have less incentive to suspend him, as it may cost them millions in the process. Questions: If you were the league disciplinarian, would you have suspended Wade? And do you think factors such as ratings come into play when making these types of decisions.
Those who know me … know I am always down for a conspiracy. Whether its JFK, high fructose corn syrup or any other thing … but the NBA is not rigging things for the Miami HEAT. I wouldn’t have suspended D-Wade for it, but I am probably in the minority here.
greetings from germany, love ur chat!
two questions involing our german wunderkind and maybe future nba draft pick dennis schroeder.
1.how do you think does Dirk`s individual performance look like in the near future?
2. Whats ur opinion about dennis schroeder? Is he probably staying in europe or is he welcome to try and make the roster?
Thanks for checking me Joey…
1. Dirk is on the decline but he still will be a problem for opposing defenses. He just won’t be able to carry the Mavs single handed like in years past.
2. I need to see more of him, but I am really inspired by his story … how can you not root for a guy with that journey …
Am I the only person who thinks Noel is too skinny for the NBA? How will he be able to stop someone from backing him down in the post or setting screens. Dude is just too fragile to me for the riggers of the NBA.
Do you remember a young Kevin Garnett? Allen Iverson? Manute Bol? Reggie Miller? Tayshaun Prince? Jalen Rose?
Lots of bony guys have thrived in the league being undersized from a weight standpoint. I think Nerlens will be fine. All about leverage on the lbock, not body mass in a lot of instances.
