..could the mavs can lure iggy and west?if they try to run after those guys??
.,any thoughts about when 2013-2014 season will take over??
What’s up Hoop Freaks? Hope the week is being good to you. Hope you’re enjoying the NBA Finals. Surprised to see two blowout games between two elite teams but it happens. I expect Miami to fight with championship character and I know without a doubt the Spurs won’t be backing down. This one is going seven heaven my good people. Let’s bang this out … feeling like I could go off for 30 tonight …
I’m doing well. Thanks for asking. I think Mark Cuban and the Mavericks are gearing up to make a splash this summer. I don’t know if Al Jefferson fits what they’re trying to do, but I can totally see a guy like Andre Iguodala being pursued by the franchise. I could also see Brandon Jennings very high on their wishlist as well, but the Bucks will likely be able to match any offer. The Mavericks do not believe Darren Collison is their long term solution at point guard. If they can upgrade, they will.
Lang, please tell me you don’t buy this rumored trade that would send Chris Bosh to the Charlotte Hornets for the #4 pick. I am all for the Hornets improving their team, but acquiring Bosh would ruin Charlotte’s cap flexibility for 2014. Should they do this deal?
I don’t buy it. Win or lose the Miami HEAT have made it to three straight NBA Finals. As great as the Spurs have been they never were able to make it to the Finals in back-to-back seasons. Think about that for a moment. Now back to your question … there isn’t a guy in this draft better than Bosh is right now or one who could fill his void if he left. I think he would be great for the Bobcats, but Miami would be taking a step back. With D-Wade’s lingering health issues … don’t think trading Bosh is a smart move right now.
Hi Lang, I like Mo Cheeks as a person, player, and assistant coach; but I don’t see him as a head coach in the NBA. I think Nate would have been a better choice for DET, given he is generally able to get teams to over-achieve. This feels like more of the same for DET. Thoughts on the hire?
This, in my humble opinion, probably starts the clock on Joe Dumars’ removal from power in Detroit. I like Mo and man oh man was he a great player during his day but his coaching record was spotty. Maybe time in OKC has helped him. Can’t rule that out. But this appears to be a reach on paper.
Who goes 1-5 in this years draft?
I wish I had this kind of crystal ball because I would be making A-Woj money. But for what it’s worth my top five talents in the draft are (in no particular order) Nerlens Noel, Otto Porter, McLemore, CJ McCollum and Anthony Bennett.
My sleeper is Allan Crabbe because of his perimeter shooting. There’s always a place in the L for guys who can stroke it from distance.
What’s up GOAT?
What are your thoughts on Anthony Bennett. I’m extremely high on the kid. In fact, he would rank #1 on my big board in this draft. His inside/outside game which will allow him to cause match-up issues for other teams will make him a legit threat, maybe right out of the gate.
Although I’m usually about taking who you think is the best player unless you have a stud blocking him perhaps, I’m not sure he fits great in Cleveland. I bet their fans are thinking, if we had only drafted Drummond instead of Waiters. Irving/Bennett/Drummond would be very nice moving forward.
Thoughts on Bennett? Who ranks as your #1?
I like what I have seen from Anthony Bennett, although I think any comparisons to Larry Johnson are a huge stretch at this point. I tend to lean toward Ben McLeMore being the best talent in this draft with the most long term potential … but I’m not sure he has that extra gear. He could be a Eric Gordon type or could easily wind up being OJ Mayo. It will be interesting to watch how it all develops over the next few years.
Evening Lang- hope all is good with the Greenes; followup on last week chat query: let’s say CP stays with LAC; Dwight either goes Texas/stays LAL or at least doesn’t opt for ATL and Hawks choose not to pursue keeping Smith; who do you think ATL will pursue ‘hard’ in FA and if you think they should focus differently- who should Hawks focus on?
The Greene Ladies are all doing well. We put up the trampoline in the backyard and man, the smile from my oldest daughter gave me the shivers bro. Feels good to provide.
If the Hawks can’t land CP3 or Dwight Howard I don’t expect them to go crazy with their wallets. They are in a strengthened position … they have good draft picks, a plethora of cap space and guys like Al Horford and Lou Williams who will be able to steal a few wins while things work themselves out.
I can see the Hawks looking at a guy like Iguodala should he decide to opt out. He would fit the culture Danny Ferry is trying to build.
Good evening Lang, 2012 ATL Draftees: SG John Jenkins and PF Mike Scott are the first Hawks draftees since at least 2010 that have actually stuck with team for an entire season, though neither got “a lot” of regular season floor time- how did you see their development during the 12/13 season and do you foresee them as part of Hawks plans in future?
Amazing to think of all the Hawks’ draft picks over the years who haven’t been able to stick. I got to know John quite a bit this season and man I will tell you his work ethic is incredible. Humble, hard working and dedicated. Elite range on the jumper. Watching him and Kyle Korver after practice battling was always fun. I can definitely see him taking a bigger role this upcoming season and getting 15-17 minutes per night consistently (depending on who they bring in during free agency). I’m not sure he is a full-time starter in the immediate future but every team needs a guy like that around.
I think Mike will stick around the league for a bit. He has a strong jumper from the elbow and is solid in pick and pop situations. He might play much in Atlanta because Al Horford is likely about to move to the power forward position full-time.
Whats good Lang I hope all is well with you brother. Its Wed. so lets get it started my friend.
1. Are the Hawks looking to start Sharp shooter John Jenkins next season
2. Whats the status on mike scott I think he showed some talent even though he played limited mins
3.Rice Jr or Hardaway Jr which would you take and why
3Q in the building!
1. I don’t see John starting, but I do expect coach Budenholzer to feature him more during summer league much like the Spurs featured Leonard last summer. Basically putting weight on his shoulders and seeing how much he can handle.
2. His contract is not guaranteed for next season but I expect him back on the roster, unless the Hawks hit pay dirt in free agency and need to clear room
3. Hardaway Jr because he’s a bit more athletic. More versatile.
Lang, hope all is well bud, cause it sure isn’t on my end after that HEAT spanking.
What happened to Hoopsworld during the game?!?!?! No updates on twitter that you see, no fresh news or articles… you can’t all have been as gobsmacked as us HEAT fans could you?
I believe that it takes this kind of humiliation to wake up Miami, but in saying that if the Spurs play like this in Game 4, they’ll get to celebrate on their court in Game 5. How do you now see this series panning out?
Also, does Rio and Bosh become the scapegoats who get traded?
Man listen, the Spurs dropped the Hulk Hogan (and Miguel) leg drop on the HEAT last night. My goodness. I didn’t expect that type of domination. I’m also surprised Chris Bosh and Dwyane Wade have been bottled up like this. D-Wade I understand because he’s hurting more than you know … but Bosh … that guy has to step up because 12 points and 5 rebounds is just not going to cut it trying to win a ring this year.
HOOPSWORLD twitter has been quiet as of late. Maybe we should have a guy take control of the account during games and live tweet. Not sure how that would go over, but worth a shot.
Lang Greene!!! Ahhh, I haven’t been on a chat in a while, but I still keep up with your posts. I’ve got a couple questions for you:
1. If the Suns do trade Gortat during/after the draft, what would they probably get back in the deal? What are they looking to get for him?
2. Why are the Cavs so against making the trade with the Mavs with them giving up their two second rounders this year for the 13th pick and Shawn Marion? I really don’t understand it. I am a Warriors fan, but moreso a fan of the NBA in general, and Shawn Marion really is a great player. He is still a pretty damn good defensive player, he rebounds, is a good passer, can play two positions, and is a crafty scorer. He is a little overpaid, but really it’s an expiring deal, and who really are the Cavs going to get that is better. The Marion deal gives the Cavs the starter they need at SF to make the playoffs plus the #13 pick in the draft to add to their future potential.
Sorry for ranting a bit there Lange, but I think Marion’s underrated and I don’t understand why the Cavs don’t agree to it, it’d be a steal for them. If they do end up declining it, I only see them instead signing Speights to a regrettable deal and overpaying on some wing player.
Mike … thanks for rolling with me man, I truly appreciate it.
1. As a lottery team, the Suns need help across the board. I would call Oklahoma City and try to pry away Reggie Jackson (or Jeremy Lamb), a late pick and Kendrick Perkins.
2. Simple. Marion has threatened retirement in the past. I get the impression Shawn doesn’t want to go to a rebuilding situation. Shawn is at a place in his career where he wants to be playing for the postseason and titles. Not being a mentor. That could be the reason. I just don’t think Marion shows up to Cleveland happy.
What do you think of Thomas Robinson as a player?
If his game ever caught up to his confidence we would have an All-Star guy. I think he will develop and be a Kris Humphries (before marriage) type. He’s strong and has a good physical frame but needs minutes to develop and I’m not sure if he gets them in Houston.
Yo, Whats up Big Dawg!
With the draft coming up for my Bulls, I would like to know who do you see them going after? I think they need some back court help but they also need a decent scoring back up for Noah. I see Tim Hardaway Jr as a possible option on some mock lists. Your thoughts?
Also, thanks for tuning into my radio show too. I appreciate look dawg. Lemme know when you are gonna tune in and I got ya covered on the music and shout outs.
What’s good bruh? Love your radio show!
When I think of Chicago in this year’s draft I’m thinking along the lines of a athletic wing who can provide defense. Guys like Hardaway Jr and Jamaal Franklin come immediately to mind. But the team also needs outside shooting to create spacing for a healthy Derrick Rose … Allen Crabbe will likely be available right there.
If Sac Kings traded DMC & SALMONS to BOSTON for J.Green,C.Lee & Sullinger who would say “no”? Would the vets in Bos be able to straighten DMC out? (Love to hear the first conversation between KG & DMC).
Sacramento says no. DMC is an All-Star waiting to happen if he can get his mental under control. The collection of Boston talent you mentioned doesn’t get Sacramento out of the basement … more importantly those guys don’t help the Kings sell tickets.
OG Langster…hope ur well bud…So the Celts are in rebuilding mode and Doc doesn’t seem to wanna be a part of that…what’s your take on him opting out and returning to coach my clippers? I been a fan since even before he was our starting PG and i think he’s exactly what we need to get over the hump…what say u? U think he’s looking for a year off, different line of work or looking for an easier partner to take to the big dance?
If Doc doesn’t return to Boston next season I expect him to take a year or two off and spend time with family. I think the Clippers could benefit from a guy like that roaming the sidelines, but I don’t see him making the jump from Celtics to Clippers that quickly.
If Miami fails the next 2 years to get a title, do you think something to the Big 3? I think Lebron will opt out next year. Do you think he could bolt for Chicago or LA? I don’t think Wade or Bosh opts out because they won’t get a max deal. Do you see one of them being traded?
If the team makes it to the Finals again I don’t think guys are going to be looking to leave a winning environment. I would expect roster tweaks and maybe a change in philosophy but the big three would remain intact with that type of success.
I definitely think the HEAT are going to re-evaluate their small ball approach this summer. They’re going to have to get some bigger bodies on the interior. During the regular season it worked to perfection … but the playoffs … the grind of the postseason … the lull of halfcourt set dominated games has proven to be a struggle for small ball. But hey, they’re in the Finals with a legitimate chance to win it all so no need for the doomsday talk.
I gotta hand it to Popovich and his staff, great game plan against Memphis by fronting and doubling Zach Randolph and great game plan against the HEAT by clogging the middle and making the Big Three into average jump shooters (which they are just average jump shooters).
Hollins was out coached IMO and so is Spoelstra.
How do you see it?
Great coaching by Pop as usual but the Miami HEAT are complying. LeBron and D-Wade need to be aggressive going to the whole regardless. Force the referees to make some tough calls. LeBron getting to the line for just 6 attempts in three games is ridiculous.
Respect to San Antonio for being disciplined, but Miami is making it easier for them to by being so passive offensively.
Shaq essentially said of Dwight Howard to stop clowning around and get serious if you really want to win titles.
Coming from The Big Clown himself maybe that statement wasn’t so clever BUT Shaq did play serious on the court most of his career.
Will Howard pay any attention to the retired Superman?
Funny how time allows people to turn into great thinkers.
Shaq had an excellent career but my biggest complaint with him was his penchant for using the regular season to work himself into shape. By doing that he left 2-3 titles on the table. Howard has never played with a prime Kobe Bryant or a prime D-Wade or an emerging Penny Hardaway … so I have to be fair to D12. As great as Kobe is, he’s nowhere near where he was a few years ago.
Its been a long while since I have sent anything in. I was in hiding until knowing the fate of the Kings. Now back to business. With this renewed vigor here in Sacramento (something that hasn’t been seen since the Maloofs took control) do you think that this new ownership and front office are going to give this embattled NBA city something fresh and exciting to support? The roster is a mess with several players that provide the same game. Do you see Vivek and staff blowing this team up or working with what they already have?
Yes. The team already made a good splash bringing in Mike Malone … then tried to lure Larry Bird into the fold. The future is bright and I think the team will continue to try and bring in elite basketball minds.
hey lang – as much as he is loved, should the bulls take the opportunity to deal Luol Deng this offseason? it seems Butler could step in with better defense, more athleticism and same production. they’ve tried the last two off seasons to no avail. what say you?
Can’t see Luol Deng being traded.
Lang good day 1st time on your chat… My Q how does spurs get latent out of the dark? Manu, parker, neal, grenn, leonard, ect. Can it be good scouting, pop or lucky? I hope my CATS gets lucky on this draft day by using it to olapido or benneth thanks
Last question … welcome aboard my man to the land of Hoop Freaks
Spurs invested heavily into their scouting department … they target certain types of guys … not flashy but consistent … hard workers … the kind of guys you would want with you in a street fight even though none of them carry themselves as tough guys. Think about that. Look at those names … I’ll take all of those guys with me in the foxhole because I know they’ll do their best …
