Lang Greene is a NBA Writer for HOOPSWORLD covering the Atlanta Hawks and Eastern Conference. Lang’s chat gets started at 8pm EST every Wednesday.
Lang! I hope all is well with you my friend. the Draft is tomorrow and I hope Danny Ferry is on the right track.
1. If the Hawks move up in the draft who is the target
2. Who could be a steal in the second round for the Hawks
3. Should the Hawks just bottom out and hope for lottery luck in 2014
What’s up Hoop Freaks? Packed house tonight, the day before the draft, so responses may be shorter than usual. I will try to get to as many questions as I can. Time to grind.
What’s up 3Q? Hope all is well.
1. Reports are indicating Shabazz Muhammad and Jamaal Franklin has generated interest from Atlanta’s front office.
2. I think Seth Curry could be a second round steal in the right situation. Coach Budenholzer and the Spurs had a lot of relatively obscure guys turns into strong gunners on the outside
3. I don’t think bottoming out is what the Hawks are looking for, plus it dampens the value of the franchise to marquee free agents. Lastly, the draft is too much of a crap shoot to follow tis method.
Whats up Lang? I will be @Phillips Arena to see what Danny Ferry will do on draft night…YESSIR! My question is…Do you see any possible way we can land Burke or possible trade for MKG from the bobcats???
I hope you enjoy the time out there my man. I was thinking about heading down but we have a pretty tight deadline schedule here at HW, so I will likely be home
MKG is off the table. Charlotte GM Rich Cho confirmed this earlier. Sure, I think the Hawks could potentially move up but from everything I hearI don’t believe the Hawks have an interest in Burke.
Ben McLemore or Oladapio. Which shooting guard is ranked higher on most teams draft charts. Who is ranked higher on your draft chart and why.
Not privy to teams big boards so I can’t say for sure. What I do know is that McLemore was held in higher regard throughout the league until recently. I think he is the more dynamic player but I wonder if he has that extra gear to be great. I think Oladipo is more of a niche defensive type of guy.
There are multiple reports coming out which state Ben McLemore’s draft stock has plummeted lately due to poor workouts and lack of conditioning. One report went as a far as saying “Jamal (check) Franklin looks like the better pro and he’s recovering from an ankle injury.” Questions: How much stock do you take on these reports? And do you believe this will truly impact his draft status. Also, do agents of other SG’s draftees leak reports like this in an effort to increase their clients draft position.
Not much stock. I think Ben McLemore is the second best prospect in this draft and my thoughts haven’t wavered. There are a lot of players who look sensational during the pre-draft workouts and improve their stock (remember Kedrick Brown), but I rely on in-game play and I think Ben is the goods.
Anthony Bennett seems like an undersized PF at 6’7″. I know he was a beast on the boards in college, but may be much different with the length of the NBA. To me, he has “tweener” written all over him in the mold of a Derrick Williams or an undersized PF like Carl Landry. Would you agree with this belief. And do you think teams will pass on him due to his lack of size / length.
I can see where you’re coming from, but Bennett plays much more of a power game than those two guys. I don’t think Bennett slides past No. 7.
Hypothetically, if you were a betting man and were offered 5 to 1 Alex Len was going to be the 1rst overall pick in this years draft. Do you take the bet? Or is there too much uncertainty about Nerlens Noel to be confident taking the underdog Len.
I wouldn’t at 5/1 odds. But if the odds were say 20/1, yes, I would throw some bread down on it.
If you were the GM of the Washington Wizards and Nerlens Noel falls to you at #3. Do you take him based on potential. Or go for more of a need at SF in Otto Porter. Justify your decision.
Corey- this is such an open ended question. It depends on who the first two picks were. If I’m the Wizards I’m looking for a wing to place next to Brad Beal and John Wall. So I would go Porter, but if Noel is still there … man he would be hard to pass up.
Are NBA teams making a mistake by overlooking Seth Curry in this year’s draft?
Possibly. But not in the Seth turns out to be a 25+ point per game scorer. But I think Seth could carve out a niche role in the league because of his shooting. Teams need strong shooting. Now, you know he has the pedigree (Dell, Steph) and the work ethic to go along with it too. If he’s still on the board in the latter stages of the draft why not take a chance on the young man.
Based on what you reported yesterday, who do you think the Hawks are targeting?
I think the Hawks are interested in Andre Iguodala if they can’t land Dwight Howard. I think he would fit the culture Danny Ferry is trying to build and thrive in coach Budenholzer’s system. Plus he’s a former teammate of Lou Williams.
Hi Lang!!With Kobe saying he’ll play for 3 to 4 more years, would he be willing to sacrifice some of his money for the Lakers to upgrade after his deal expires?
Respect to Kobe. But two things here … first I don’t see him playing more than two more seasons. Secondly, nothing about Kobe says he will take a huge discount. You didn’t see guys like Tim Duncan and Kevin Garnett take huge reductions in salary … I figure Kobe won’t play for less than $14 million per season.
Why does everyone think the Clips should move Bledsoe? Can’t he and Chris Paul coexist in the backcourt like Rondo and Bradley? If the Clips get rid of Butler and after next year lose Crawford (or resign him for less), then they can afford to keep Bledsoe too.
I don’t think the Clippers should be in a rush to trade Bledsoe and I believe new head coach Doc Rivers said the same thing. The Clippers have the leverage. Now to your point, the Clippers may gain the cap space to re-sign him along with CP3 … but teams rarely ever invest that much money in one position.
Lang my man, I hope you are well. I have just recovered from that Finals series with my HEAT on top. Even told the manager I’m going on an extended lunch break to watch that game 7 haha.
So my question to you is to help me out with who comes back to he HEAT for the 3-Peat… Lewis and Jones opted in. Why has Ray not? Could we afford to resign him, and do we bring back Birdman?
My man from Greece! While the series itself overall wasn’t as epic … games six and seven were high drama at the most elite level. My goodness. I was jumping up and down in my living room late in each game.
I believe Ray is looking for a longer term deal (i.e. a bit more money). I think you must bring back Chris Andersen. He was great in the locker room and pivotal in their championship run in games six and seven.
What do ya know LG?
Have been a fan of Doc Rivers since I selected him for my first fantasy team way back in 1990. I must confess after reading Ainge’s comments as to how Doc and he discussed the future rebuild and how Doc was on board and after all his contract was for 3 more years, it appears Doc sold the Celts a bill of goods. He appears to have either changed his mind or was less than truthful. A fair weather friend? He has gone down pegs in my book, what do you think?
Well, I can’t fault Doc Rivers much here. I think we’re all guilty of this somewhat in our professional lives. Ainge was sitting there offering the most lucrative contract for a coach in the league and talking about a possible rebuild 2-3 seasons down the line. Now if you’re Doc … put yourself in his shoes for a moment … the team is winning at a high level, you’re being offered huge money and 2-3 seasons is a lifetime in professional sports. Of course Doc said he would be on board. And to tell you the truth, I think he was at the time. Then reality set in.
Just would like to pick your brain on the following and get your thoughts:
Phoenix at the moment is a cellar dweller. They get to pick 5th in the NBA Draft. Why not take a risk on Bynum? Especially with their med staff’s record and Bynum declaring his rehabbing is over. They wanted to throw money at Eric Gordon with his own injuries, but with Bynum you still have Gortat there as insurance. If it doesn’t go well in year one, the worst that can happen is you have better odds at an Andrew Wiggins or Jabari Parker? Put that with your 2013 #5 pick, and maybe a healthier Bynum in year two (and 27 yrs of age?) And they can always resign Gortat if need be, or trade him if he wants to leave.
I can see this, especially with the Suns likely to be shopping Gortat at some point this season. But Bynum is a huge risk and from what I hear is still going to want big bank despite not playing a single minute this season. Might be too big of a risk to pursue, but I see your logic here.
One more but boxing related since you like it…. Do we see Canelo serve it up to Floyd? Or does Floyd keep that record in place?
Floyd wins the fight in a close but convincing fashion. But make no mistake, Canelo … that red head is going to touch Floyd more than we’ve ever seen Floyd touched throughout his career. But this fight will eanr Floyd more fans because of it. It is the exact fight he needs. One I’m glad he stepped up and took.
I just read the Warriors are interested in Michael Kidd-Gilchrist. Why? Barnes looks like a star. Wouldn’t a trade involving them be a huge mistake?
MKG trade rumors have been shot down. Bobcats aren’t going to move him.
I feel spurs losing Stephen Jackson really hurt them in the finals. Spurs had no back up for kahwi when heat played 4 guard lineup, which was almost the whole game. To me spurs need to add a long, veteran 3 man that can hit the 3 ala Shane batter. I know this is off the radar a bit but I think James Posey could be that exact player for Spurs. He’s only 36 and been out the league for 2 years, but he’s 6’8 with 2 rings and a clutch player and spurs could manage his minutes. What do you think??
Always easy to play the hindsight game but I think you have a point about Stephen Jackson. He would have been a good change of pace option once Danny Green, Manu Ginobili AND Gary Neal all got cold. But if Stephen was causing trouble in the locker room and sulking one would also argue that maybe the Spurs wouldn’t have gotten this far to begin with.
Hi Lang – PPierce and KG to LAL for Pau and MWP? win win for both teams? Thanks
Won’t happen my brother.
Do you think it would be foolish for Chicago to pass up on Dieng if he is still available. I think Thibs can do wonders with that kid. Asik was a good defender but I think that Dieng can be special under Thibodeau.
If Dieng slips to No. 20 I believe Chicago should definitely explore the option. But I’m hearing Dieng’s knees were flagged as well so his stock could take a tumble.
Ok why the infatuation with doc, he’s a mediocre coach who got ran out of orlando then was utter garbage in boston including losing 18 straight at one point before getting two hall of famers and one championship with a defense built by thibbs
Sorry, I had to stop reading the question after you said Doc was mediocre.
OKC is looking to move into top 5 of draft moving Perkins, 12th and 29th picks. No takers so far, but what about this potential trade?
Phoenix gets #12, #29 and Perkins
OKC gets #5 and Beasley. Both team shed bad contracts plus young Suns get veteran leadership they badly need and make Gortat expendable. (potentially to Blazers for 10th pick)
Also if Bulls can’t extend Deng what would you think of Deng for #13 pick and Marion? CP3 and Howard aren’t coming to Dallas. Deng is a 2x all star plus an expiring contract so cap space stays intact for Mavs for summer 2014. Thoughts?
I wouldn’t touch this deal if I was OKC. The Thunder are already soft on the interior … trading Perk for Beasley is just not a good look for the team. And if you’re expecting the No. 5 pick, let’s say Alex Len, to come in and be ready to contribute to a title contender that would be a bad mistake too.
Waz u Lang. This draft is driving me crazy. No true outstanding player and trade rumors that just don’t make any sense. Why would the Cavs trade the 19th pick for Thomas Robinson when they need help in so many other positions?
Teams are just talking and working the phone lines. Doing the proper road work. That’s what they’re paid the big bucks to do. What we’re typically hearing are talks that went nowhere.
What do you think about Granger to Phoenix for Beasley, Scola and Shannon Brown. Phoenix dumps additional salary in 2014 – 2015 and Pacers get a second unit that can score.
Can’t see the small market Pacers taking on much additional salary with re-signing Paul George about to become a reality.
Since Chris Paul is pretty much clinched to stay in LA and Howard won’t be going to Atlanta without Paul, what do the Hawks do from here? What’s realistic for them?
Andre Iguodala is a realistic option should the team decide to pursue him
Andre Iguodala is a realistic option should they decide to pursue it.
I think Spurs window of opportunity closed this year. Do you think the hang-over of giving up game 6 of the Finals, will come to hurt them for next year? Or, do you think they will come back rejuvinated for anther fresh start? I think it will be extremely difficult to compete with the youngs guns of the Western conference.
We write the eulogy for the Spurs’ championship window every year, but this was likely the last season we got to experience the old guys make a run.
Do you think Denver is the best fit for Iguodala? Do you think JR Smith would come back Denver?
The JR Smith and Denver train has run its course. Won’t happen. Denver’s front office is saying they want Andre back … but money talks. The man did opt out of $16 million in guaranteed money.
Does the trade rumor of Luol Deng for Washington’s 3rd overall pick make sense for the Bulls?
My man Mr. Johnson.
With a healthy D-Rose coming back next season the Bulls are going to be thinking title. Trading away Deng would seriously damper those expectations. I have it on good authority the Bulls aren’t shopping Deng and recent reports indicate they are actually talking about a contract extension with the veteran.
Kaleb will be here soon. Enjoy your sleep … while you can.
Chances Jimmer ends up in Jazz or Pacers uniform?
25 percent. The Kings told my man Jason Kings they are not shopping Jimmer at the moment.
Any chance Miami can get cousins and last away from the Kings? Maybe with miller Anthony and next years #1?
No. Miami don’t have the assets to acquire DeMarcus Cousins … and the package you outlined doesn’t even come close. One would also argue they wouldn’t want him in the locker room … a championship locker room.
