Lang Greene is a NBA Writer for HOOPSWORLD covering the Atlanta Hawks and Eastern Conference. Lang’s chat gets started at 8pm EST every Wednesday.
Lang, What’s good with you Big Dawg. Hope all is well with you and the Fam. Another Wed. Lang and 3Q in the building.
1. What type of style will the Hawks play next season under Bud. SA plays a boring style, this is the ATL a city with life in the fast lane
2. If the Hawks miss out in this year free agents market. Should they wait for a restricted free agent like Paul George or another player next season and sign him to a nice offer sheet
3. What are your thoughts about drafting Glen Rice Jr as a wing in this years draft(I think the kid could be a steal )
What’s up Hoop Freaks? NBA Finals on deck. Who you rolling with? When you look at individual matchups, the bench and head coach the edge goes to San Antonio, but the HEAT have the great equalizer in LeBron James … like him, love him, loathe him or hate you have to admit he’s in beast mode right now … taking everyone’s lunch money. Let’s work.
My man 3Q! Hope you’re enjoying the time off from school.
1. I think Budenholzer will play a similar style as the Spurs. He won’t deviate much from it. But here’s the thing, the Spurs’ style is NOT boring. The 2004 Pistons were a boring team if you ask me … Now, you can make an argument that Spurs’ players don’t add additional life to the game. Sure. But the Spurs’ offensive is dynamic. They just don’t have flash.
2. I’ve spoken with Danny Ferry on numerous occasions and I just don’t get the feel he’s going to be silly about all of the cap room he created. The goal is to try and lure Chris Paul and Dwight Howard to Atlanta this summer, but if he whiffs you won’t see him overspend to compensate.
3. Interesting. I think Jamaal Franklin is the more dynamic player out of the two and if he is around then I say the Hawks should try him (if they decide to go wing).
What is more likely: Kobe Bryant starts game one of 2013-2014 or Cutino Mobley averages ten points per game?
I never get too scooped up in points per game these days … I used to though. If a team like Charlotte signed Mobley he would get more floor time than say the New York Knicks. Most guys in the league can give you a pretty good scoring stat line if you give them shots. But then it comes down to the effectiveness of the scoring.
But for my money I can see Kobe coming on opening night before Cuttino gets an opportunity to average double-digits in the league right now … four years removed from the action
Lang my brother! The show stopper!
How goes it this week? Man persoanlly cannot WAIT for these finals to start. Please please please go to 7 games hahaaa! Ok ’nuff chitchat bro!
Asked this last week but me Q was to long winded.
Do you see any way, shape, or form that the grizz can land Paul pierce? In my head it’s a match made in heaven! Brings everything they need. I dunno if it’s possible tho, Im never into trades etc.
Thanks again for another chat my bruva!
GO SPURS! Do it for the big fundamental one more time!!!
What’s good my man? Thanks for rolling with me week in and week out.
Honestly, I can’t see Paul Pierce in a Memphis uniform and being happy about it. I think he would want a bigger situation and from a salary standpoint the Grizz don’t have the assets Boston would be looking for in my opinion. Plus it is hard to talk about any roster moves in Memphis because of the uncertainty of the Lionel Hollins situation (for the record I am a supporter of L).
The Spurs have a strong shot. They are not dead in the water. But I do think that LeBron may run wild … if Kawhi Leonard doesn’t bring his “A” game defensively.
Hi Big Lang, hope all is great !
How would Pierce fit with the Clippers as a steady veteran go-to wing, Redick with the Bulls alongside Rose as a decent defender who can also somewhat create for himself and hit the 3pt ball & Mayo with the Sixers alongside Holiday with an emerging overall game ?
I also have a talent-wise draft question for you. Can you tell me your opinion on: Reggie Bullock and Otto Porter ?
I think Pierce is a better player than Caron Butler on the wing at this point, but he also plays a much slower game than the Clippers like running. Once again, tough to start assigning players until you know who is going to coach the team … but the club will have cap room available to re-sculpt the team. Only $42 million guaranteed dollars on the books for next season. I think Mayo next to Jrue Holiday would be a good thing if your expectations are in the right order. Mayo is not an All-Star guy. I thought he would be … but it doesn’t look like that’s his trajectory. If you’re thinking All-Star type production, i.e. 20+ point per game production then I think you’ll be disappointed.
I usually stay away from doing comparisons because it is all about roles and opportunity for these rookies. I compare Reggie Bullock to a Quincy Pondexter type, a guy who may develop out and give you 7-9 points and a respectable three-point shot. I liken Otto Porter to a Shawn Marion. A versatile wing who could develop into a strong defender and double-digit scorer. If we circled back 15 years from now and Otto had averaged 15/7 in his prime years I wouldn’t be surprised.
Brother Lang…how u? What do u think of the Bledsoe to Orlando murmurs? Just Afflalo won’t work in my opinion, gotta throw in that #2 pick right? Vet+pick for Vet+top-prospect sounds fair to me. Hell we’ll throw in our own 1st rounder if it ain’t…Who do u like at #2 for clips? Oladipo? Mclemore? Porter? or…?
Mostly I believe it is just speculation at this point. Eric is a valued member of the Clippers organization and they’re not going to trade him just to do it. If trading Bledsoe allows them to upgrade significantly on the wing then I believe they’ll do it. But with Chris Paul’s injury history they’re not just going to trade an asset who makes jut $1.7 million. Getting Bledsoe for that kind of money is a steal my brother. Not saying the Clippers won’t deal him … just saying it has to be a deal they like.
hey whats up lang? Big magic fan here. Is it possible for Orlando to snag Eric Bledsoe from the clippers? Would love to see it. Also do you think Roy hibbert looks like the ticket oak? I think he is a spot on look a like. New nickname maybe?
I don’t think it happens. The Clippers are trying to win a championship w/ Chris Paul … I can’t think of an immediate asset the Magic can offer who helps them with that. The No. 2 pick would be a long term investment and I’m not sure Bledsoe’s value is that high just yet. Might make a better target to try to acquire when he hits restricted free agency next summer
Would a back court pairing of Brandon Knight & Gerald Henderson be a good idea for Detroit? Lots of talk about them moving Knight to SG, and signing Jose Calderon. Whats your option on this, and a possible Henderson signing by the Pistons?
As much as I like Gerald as a person he hasn’t been a contributor to a whole bunch of winning since entering the league. A Brandon Knight and Gerald Henderson backcourt doesn’t get Detroit smelling the playoffs again. I actually like Calderon in the lineup with developing big men (Monroe and Drummond).Nothing like having a pass-first point guard looking to set up young emerging big men still finding their niche (easy buckets).
1)cp3-28 yrs old 26.43 PER
2)bjennings-23 yrs old 16.2 PER
3)jteague-24 yrs old 16.9 PER
Based on age and value at the money they will receive this summer who is the BEST choice long run for hawks from the court and financially? I love cp3 and if d12 comes with him, awesome, but if not its a lot of money for him
Chris Paul. Nothing against Jeff, but CP3 is the best point guard in the game today and I’m excluding no one.
Look at what Chris Paul’s arrival did for Los Angeles. All of sudden those guys are winning at a high level and free agents are clamoring to be a Clipper.
Yes, it is a lot of money but CP3 would bring an aura to Atlanta. Guys would want to play with him. He would bring in a winning mentality and Atlanta would suddenly become a more marketable destination each year.
If Ben Mclemore is a Ray Allen type a shooter whit better athleticism like a lot people say, why he is no the #1 pick in everybody mock draft, if I can find a Ray Allen type a player in this draft, this is my guy. What you think?
He doesn’t have Ray Allen’s range. Honestly I believe Bradley Beal, a lottery pick from last season, was a closer comparison to Ray than Ben McLemore.
Ben is one of those guys who could be special … but he has to want it. I know it is a very small sample size, but he was extremely passive in the NCAA Tournament … to be a franchise changing player you have to have a different mentality under the bright lights. I think he could become the best player in this draft … but I also can see him being one of those OJ Mayo types (solid, but not living up to billing).
Lang your cover the Hawks. Did they really violated the NBA’s tampering policy?
Not for me to decide. Their ticket operation doesn’t work closely with the basketball operations side. I do think there is chatter within the organization about luring CP3 and D12, but I don’t think Danny Ferry or any of his guys influenced what was released to the season ticket holders.
Hey Greene how are you?
1) I know sources say CP3 is very likely to stay in LAC, but why have their not really been any rumors about him to Houston? Is that not a city he’s considering? All I’m hearing is Mavs and Hawks if not LAC.
2) When do you think we will hear speculation about other FAs? Tired of only hearing about D12….
3)Where does Horford rank in your top big men (center or PF)?
1. Houston has its sights set on Dwight Howard and there is only so much money that can go around.
2. Speculation about other free agents is out there but if you’re only tuning into and getting your news from the “four letter” you’re only going to hear about the frontrunners. Such is life.
3. Don’t have a prepared list. I would say he is definitely in my top 10 though for big men in the league.
Hi from Greece.
Rumor says here that Atlanta has promised to Giannis Antekoumpo that they will pick him with one of their 2 first round picks.
What’s your feedback from there ??? The kid can be a monster player believe will be the steal of this draft.
Haven’t heard this one at all. I know he’s creeping up mock drafts and is now projected in the first round … but I haven’t heard anything from my sources about an Atlanta Hawks guarantee.
How have you been keeping? Hope you are enjoying the playoffs as much as I do. These have been the most exciting ones I’ve seen in a long time.
The Pacers made these ECF very competitive and exciting, do you think that Danny Granger will be with the team next season? The though of P. George and D. Granger at the 2 and 3 position and Lance coming off the bench would give any teams a handful to deal with.
Do you believe that the Knicks can find serviceable players in the D-league to booster the roster and be competitive?
Any chance Patrick Ewing will get the call from BK for the head coach position? He’s been an assistant long enough, he’s paid his dues for sure.
Where are the places Josh Smith is more likely to end up do you think?
Predictions, Heat or Spurs?
As always, thanks for your time and enjoy the Finals.
Playoffs have been great my man. How u?
Word is Danny won’t ever return to his once strong form, but that doesn’t mean he can’t be effective. I definitely think he begins the season on the Pacers’ roster but if he comes back ballin I wouldn’t be surprised if the team shopped him around a bit. He is approaching the last year of his deal and the team is clearly Paul George’s at this point. So if the Pacers can flip him for some value then they might consider it.
But, remember, the Pacers really like Danny and value his impact on and off the floor. They’re not going to just ship him to rid the guy. He’s a class act and would be a professional adjusting to a new role.
Patrick Ewing is not in the mix for the NEts’ coaching gig. Last I head, a lead assistant position with Charlotte was on the table.
I can see Houston and Dallas taking strong looks at Josh Smith.
HEAT in seven. Just a little too much LeBron James.
Should the mavs go after al jefferson and t.evans and draft a point guard with the 13 pick?
Mark Cuban said he wants a championship before Dirk retires … not sure the trio you outlined above help get them there.
Grant Hill and J-Kidd hung ‘em up. Stackhouse will no doubt do the same. Any other big names you see retiring this summer? Also, do you think Steve Nash retires after playing out the remainder of his contract in 2015?
I see Juwan Howard riding off into the sunset. Respect to him. Great career. Kurt Thomas will also probably hang them up. Michael Redd too (if he hasn’t done so quietly already).
Lang old buddy, what’s happening
Not a Celtics question. But it seems something is wrong with NBA Officiating. I look at the incident between Birdman and Hansbrough. The refs stopped the game, reviewed film and still didn’t get it right per the league office. And these are supposed to be the Best refs. Comments.
My man! Miss those epic Celtics debates with you … lol …
Birdman should have been ejected on the spot. You just can’t have guys waylaying on other guys like that. I’m cool with a little shove here or there to create some space, you know the normal wolfing, but Chris was out of control and admitted as much.
I just think the referees are hesitant to make game changing calls like that with so much on the line.
Hey Lang, Hope all is great!
The focus on Game 7 of the ECF between Miami and Indiana pretty much took away from the importance of the NBA losing 2 of its most loved stars who announced their retirement.
Can we PLEASE have a TEAM HILL VS TEAM KIDD for the Rookies-Soph challenge instead of Team Shaq vs Team Chuck to send them out the right way. Maybe get the teams in coloursof Duke and Cal Bears…
Also will Grant be joining Jason in the Basketball HOF?
Nothing more to add to your comment about J0Kidd and Grant Hill. Class acts all the way through. The game will miss those guys.
Since it is the BASKETBALL Hall of Fame and not the NBA Hall of Fame, then I think Grant will get in because of his impact at the collegiate level as well.
But the man put in work in the NBA too … don’t sleep. 7x All-Star, over 17,000 career points, 5 All-NBA selections. Hall of Fame bound in my book.
Kobe was originally drafted by the Charlotte Hornets. I believe for what the poor Charlotte fans missed out on, Kobe should play his final season with them! I know what you will probably say but I just feel its only right, haha. He’ll be done but he can also motivate that young core. Of course this is after he truly is fone as a Laker (though its a given he retires as one)
LOL … set it up on NBA 2K13 because the Black Mamba is NOT going to Charlotte to end his career.
During the Miami v Indy series all you hear LeBron haters say is either the refs helped them, they flopped their way to the final, or Stern had something to do with it. Have people really dropped to this level of intelligence? How do you feel as a journalist when you see such stupid remarks?
PS. In terms of flopping, I rather load up my opponent with another foul that may push them to the bench and cop that fine if it means I win. It happens in amateur comps and you get pinned. Part of the game now and its up to you to not fall for it
LeBron haters are out of control. I don’t pay any attention to it. If a person looks me in the eyes and tells me LeBron isn’t one of the best talents they’ve ever seen then I cross them off the respect list. Now, there are guys who respect him but wouldn’t want him near their locker rooms if they had a team and I can definitely understand that … but to say the man isn’t a great player is foolish.
I’m not an anti-flopper. I believe the referees should call what THEY SEE not what THEY THINK happened. The referees need better control of their whistles.
Hi Lang, I’m very excited about the upcoming Finals matchup. Are there any storylines you’re particularly intrigued by? I.E the ‘home grown’ small market spurs versus the NY Yankees of the NBA (Heat) or LBJ wanting revenge from the 06-07 Finals?
Thanks, keep up the great work!
Storylines I’m watching … how K. Leonard deals with LeBron. How Mario Chalmers and Norris Cole deal with Tony Parker. Will Chris Bosh step up against Tim Duncan? Will Manu or D-Wade snap out of their respective funks first.
Could you potentially see a trade between the cavs and hawks fir al horford take place, say #1 pick and tristan thompson for al horford and then trade up with pick #19 and their two secound rounders to nab a guy like cody zeller whose been getting some awesome reviews??
No. I don’t see all of that. Danny Ferry values Al Horford and wants him around. Interesting scenario, but trading Horford fwould mean a full blown rebuild and I don’t think that is what Atlanta’s front office is angling for.
Do you feel Kawhi Leonard has the upside to become a Face of the Franchise talent for San Antonio? I haven’t seen much of his game, but man.. Coach Pop raves about this guy
Great young player with loads of potential. Face of the franchise? No, I don’t see it. But I could see him topping out to be like a prime Danny Granger and leading the team to the playoffs. The Spurs have high hopes for him. Last year during Las Vegas Summer League the team featured him offensively, trying to get him used to handling a larger role (and prepping for when that day comes).
I really dont want to go back to LA, I’ll be taking my talents to Houston. This will serve as my official announcement.
Scratch that, I’m gonna go to Dallas. Dirk is a champion, and Cuban is on Shark Tank, I love Shark Tank.
Actually, Warriors have great potential, sign and trade to the Warriors please.
Hold on, Jeanie Buss is a babe, I’m staying with the Lakers.
Very well played, so I had to give you some run on this one.
Vogel said he fully expects Granger to start if healthy next season, how will this effect the team? Can Granger play the 2 spot?
If Vogel said this and I didn’t hear it for myself … then he must plan on starting Paul George at two guard and bringing Lance Stephenson off the bench. Granger cannot play the two at this point of his career.
How much should we buy into rumors on various sites? Whether it’s Hoopsworld, ESPN or Hoopshype, should we take each rumor with a grain of salt?
Anything you hear, in all walks of life, you should put an extra bit of though to … not just NBA rumors.
Everyone has an agenda. Writers are trying to boost their profiles. Teams are trying to drive up or down the market value of players. Agents are trying to get the right fit for their clients and the list goes on and on.
Good evening Lang, hope all is righteous with you and yours; regarding recent boo-boo by ATL team ticket representative on 2 you know who FAs, since signing both of them would absolutely preclude also retaining Josh Smith, is this Hawks way of letting us know keeping Josh Smith is NOT in the 2013 summer plans?
Very subtle signs point toward Josh not being around next season … with or without CP3 and D12.
Wille ever see a pacman mayweather fight if it happens what round will pacman go to sleep? Nba question, how many games will miami get the win? I say 4-0 miami repeat as champz
No Mayweather and Pacquiao will never happen. We will get a documentary in 20 years with both guys putting their spin on it though. LEast we have something to look forward too, right? Ha. For the record I always had Money beating Manny going away … but Pacquiao was going to lay those hands on him all night though.
HEAT in seven. Spurs have too much character to get swept.
Do you think the hawks actually have a shot at both cp3 and dhoward? the consensus is that cp3 actually might come to atlanta which would be a great signing. Also what other free agents would be down to come to the ATL!!!????
No, I don’t think it will happen … but the Hawks have to try. Those types of guys put your franchise on another level and they rarely hit the market.
The Nuggets seem to be a total wildcard this summer? Are they going to keep Karl? Are they going to resign Iggy? Are they going to keep their C rotation or possibly trade one of McGee, Koufos and Mozgov? They seem to be impossible to get a read on with what direction they’re going.
Yes, everything you said plus they just lost the executive of the year, Masai Ujiri, to the Toronto Raptors. I’ll be watching them closely this summer for sure.
Hey, Mr. Lang! Outside of the lottery projected guys, who are some of your favorite late 1st-2nd rounders in this draft? I like Tim Hardaway Jr.
Allan Crabbe is a guy who may fit an immediate role because of perimeter shooting. Hardaway Jr is a good sleeper but I also like the CJ Leslie kid. I think he has solid skills but his consistency is what scares most people off. But you never know … some guys get motivated by big money so there’s still time he can turn it around.
Defend Kentucky Center Noel as the top 2 pick in the Draft.
He is under 7 feet, weighs less than 210, has no offense, and is comming off a 2nd ACL surgery.
4.4 blocks per game. 9’2 standing reach.
1. Sacramento already has too many guys similar to Courtney Lee
2. I can definitely tell you’re a Kings fan because this favors Sacramento. Can’t see it.
A Josh Smith and DeMarcus Cousins frontcourt would be freakish but ripe for an implosion.
1.Hey man first time asking you a question. What do you think of Tony Snell to the Bulls at 20 in the draft is he better then Hardaway Jr. .
2. The bulls have zero cap room can they sign Cole Aldrich and Anthony Morrow both to Vet. Min contracts? Would they take the Vet Min. ?
Thank you so much
Big Mike – you know I had to get you in for the last question as a first timer … respect
1. I think Hardaway Jr is the better pro prospect and has the pedigree. That’s who I would take between the two.
2. They can bring guys in on vet minimum deals, but Anthony is probably looking for a bit more than that and with his shooting ability … he could earn a $3m per year deal. Cole is a better candidate to take it … but with a healthy D-Rose coming back and championship intentions he wouldn’t likely see much floor time anyway.
