Why have the Hawks been quiet thus far this offseason? They aren’t gonna get Dwight anyway.
What’ up Hoop Freaks? Free agency has been crazy … but exciting at the same time. We’re all waiting to see where Dwight Howard will end up. Then the rest of the chips will fall into place. Tonight I am vibing to the sounds of Maschine Life. I respect their grind. Lots of questions in the queue … let’s bang it out. LG.
The Hawks are waiting to see what Dwight Howard chooses to do. In my opinion the Hawks have two plans. One for if Dwight chooses to come to Atlanta and the other if he decides to sign elsewhere. I think if Dwight decides to sign elsewhere, which is the likely scenario, I think Danny Ferry and company will choose to rebuild for the future. If Dwight comes to Atlanta then I think you see Josh Smith re-signed and Al Horford dealt in a separate move.
Hey Lang! This DH12 circus is making the Lakeshow look like a B movie in Chatsworth. Dr. Buss is spinning in his grave. I’m a Kings fan and defending the Lakers. Nuff said.
It has become somewhat of a circus, but I don’t have a problem with the Lakers’ recruitment. Has it been hokey? Yes, at times. But I think it shows a lot of humility for a storied franchise to recruit their future and not expect it to just land in their lap. Remember when the Lakers hired Mike Brown and Kobe Bryant chose to fly to Germany instead of show his face in support? I think it is telling that Kobe was in those meetings with Dwight. They know what’s at stake. So I think the Lakers did what they had to … sometimes you must break tradition.
Any chance the Knicks can get in the Brandon Jennings race? It’s one of the few teams he actually wants to play for
I expect the Bucks will match all offers for Brandon Jennings. As a young player I doubt he would take short money just to join New York and even if he did so Milwaukee is in a strongly leveraged position to match the offer.
If Howard decides to walk away from the lakers. Would there plan B be to bring back Bynum
No. The Andrew Bynum era (with the Lakers) is over.
die hard Phoenix Suns fan here. I do not understand the moves so far. The two best (which was still not really good) positions last year were Center with Gortat and Point guard with Dragic. So there were three positions which had to be fixed. The Suns draft a Center and trade the solid Dudley for a Point guard (Bledsoe) and Butler! What is the strategy? Of course it somehow involves next years draft. What is your opinion on Len, Butler and Bledsoe. Please one or two thoughts about These guys. Great Chats, read yours all the time!!!
I think Phoenix is in a position where they are just stockpiling talent. Clear rebuild mode. In my opinion they got a potential stud in Eric Bledsoe and Dragic will become a decent trade asset. Marcin Gortat will also likely be dealt too, eventually. With Caron Butler you get a former 20+ point scorer and solid veteran. The Suns clearly aren’t making it to the land of the playoffs, but they have good talent which could bring in more assets to make big move down the road.
With James earning his second title we´ve wrapped up the 12-13 season, what a run!
As a german ball junkie i absolutely support Dennis Schroeder and his transition to the american game.
I live near Braunschweig, where he last played, and i know the quality of their club.
What do you think will benefit him the most now that he is able to train within a multi-million-dollar-franchise like the Hawks?
I would love to see a drastic increase in his abilities based on the better training that he´s offered.
all the best Lang, hope you like our latest export product in Dennis
Schroeder’s biggest advantage was that he’s been playing against grown men in a top tier foreign league. I think it bodes well for him as a rookie contributor while other guys in his age range will struggle adapting to the league’s increased physicality.
Dennis has no choice but to improve. The old adage is … if you want to be like the pros … you have to learn from the pros. There’s no learning the NBA game, outside of the NBA game.
What’s up Big Dawg!!!
I was having a question with a friend while I was getting things for my radio show together. It was basically like this: If you were able to take one solid player from the 80s/90s that never won a championship and put them on one modern team, who would they be? I had to go with putting Mark Price on the Heat (even though I cant really root for rivals lol). He addresses any PG situation, outside shooting, can create for others as well as his own shot and he is a downright BEAST in crunch time. Your thoughts?
My man Troy!!!!! I just tuned into the Hip Hop Barbershop. Thanks for playing that Wu-Tang (Triumph). Classic.
Great question. Mark Price was an absolute terror man. He could dish it, stroke it from deep and score on the drive. Man, they don’t make a lot of players like that anymore. Guys who know the angles and even though the athleticism may be lacking could still drop 20/10 on your neck every night. Respect to MP. From 89-94 he was certified.
I would pick a guy like Mookie Blaylock and put him on a team like the Indiana Pacers. Could you imagine his defensive tenacity on the perimeter on the current Pacers’ squad? I think they were a PG away from getting the HEAT this year.
Imagine you are Danny Ainge for a second. Do you trade Rondo or keep him? Why? If you can secure two 2014 first round picks?
Keep Rajon Rondo. You have to see what you got first. Is he a franchise guy? OR isn’t he? He’s still one of the top PG’s in the game regardless, so his value won’t fall off dramatically.
Do you see Mayo going to the JAZZ? I think he would be a great fit with there young core. Even if they ahve to over pay alittle.
Looks like Mayo is closing in on a deal with the Milwaukee Bucks.
Do you see either Millsap or Jefferson ending up in Atlanta? I think both would be a great fit.
Last I heard Al Jefferson was getting love from the Charlotte Bobcats. I don’t see either guy in Atlanta honestly. Might be out of the price range Danny Ferry is looking to spend
Hey Lang, whats up. I wanna know your take on the KMart signing. Let’s be real, the choice was between Martin and Mayo after Redick went to LA. While I would’ve preferred Mayo because of his age and defense. However, Mayo’s averages per 36 were: 15.5ppg, 4.5apg, 3.6rpg, 1.1spg and 2.6tov. Martin´s per 36 were: 18.2ppg, 2apg, 3rpg, 1.2spg and 1.7tov. Mayo ran the offense a lot of times for Dallas, something he would never do in MN and Martin runs off screens and is usually more of a catch & shoot kinda guy, so the assist differential doesn´t really seem bother me. What surprised me is if we look at advanced stats we see they are very similar, but what jumps out is that Martin’s Defensive Win% is slightly higher than Mayo’s and his Offensive Win% is roughly double. Also his Steal% is higher than Mayo’s as is his Effective FG%, True Shooting% and PER. Mayo’s was slightly under the league average of 15. The one reason why I´m higher on Mayo is that he has more potential, after all the numbers are all similar and Mayo is 5 years younger, which means we´d keep him throughout his prime. BUT, for a team looking to move into the playoffs now, Martin is a little better so definitely not a bad a deal. What do you think?
I think Minnesota made a solid move by getting a verbal commitment from Kevin Martin. Solid. Kevin Martin said they needed a guy who could get buckets and K-Mart can definitely do that, plus he has familiarity with Rick Adelman’s offense. So there’s a trust factor already built in. You can’t teach chemistry which is important.
I think Mayo will be the better player, clearly, in 2-3 years. But he’s also coming off a season where his coach openly questioned his character down the stretch after the Grizzlies let him walk for nothing in free agency. Think about that.
The K-Martin move was the “right” decision to make. Less risky. But I think Mayo will be in his prime in 2 years while Kevin starts his fade. Minnesota is clearly trying to get into the playoffs now, so overall I agree with it.
Hey Lang what’s Happening
Now with the Celtics big deal with NJ how bad do you see this year. 25-33 Wins maybe.
Also, many Celt fans are unhappy with GWallace’s contract. I like the guy, he plays hard all the time and been very productive. I think most of his issues last year were due to injuries. I think he will bounce back this season and may be a trade asset at the dealine. What do you think.
The Celtics won 41 games this past season (with talent), so I see a 25-28 win season in their future as it stands today.
Gerald Wallace is basically done. I openly questioned the four-years and $40 million he received last summer and so far my initial thoughts are being validated. He’s a tough competitor and one of the guys I would want in the foxhole with me, but physically I think he’s a bit past it for the style of game he plays.
Also, I heard that it would take around 2-3 million to get Oden. If MN signs Pek, what do you think of signing Oden to play backup minutes for around 2.6 million? If he develops correctly he becomes an asset(I dont think I´d trade Pek even if Oden starts to dominate), but he becomes a legit asset. I don´t think he’d go for it though…
Cleveland and Miami from what I hear are the frontrunners for GO. Not sure his body can handle being as full-time starter and don’t believe that’s the type of opportunity he’s ultimately seeking.
Happy holidays Mr. Lang. I hope all is good with you and yours.
Drummond-Monroe-Smith. Terrible spacing and an indicating that Dumars learned nothing from his previous FA exploits — OR — a low calorie version of Bynum-Gasol-Odom?
Life is good over here my man. I have zero complaints.
I think it would be a terrific young, talented and defensive frontcourt. Yes, there would be obvious weaknesses but I also think that trio would mirror the city of Detroit’s work ethic and tenacity.
Now that Bledsoe is taken, and assuming Rondo isn’t moving, what should the Pistons do at PG?
Re-sign Jose Calderon or look into Jarrett Jack. Bring in a proven leader to work with those young bigs and get those guys easy buckets.
Hey Lang, what do you see Utah doing? They have a tremendous amount of money they actually have to spend, and IMO they have a SF spot to fill(Gordo is best at the 2). I’d love to get your boy Josh Smith as farfetched as it is. But anyone else you see them signing? Or just go with the youth and some fillers? Thanks.
Josh Smith just can’t play the small forward full-time. If he could, the Hawks would be viewing this free agency market differently. Andre Iguodala is on the market. At small forward he’s probably the best you’re going to get from this class.
Lang, do you think Jeremy Lamb plays significant minutes and actually produce for the Thunder? No more KMart forces the 2 guard issue. Also, does Perry Jones III get more than garbage time?
I tweeted about this earlier. Jeremy Lamb played a total of 147 minutes last season, but the Thunder will need him to grow up in a hurry NEXT season. If he can give them 8-10 points per night then I think their bench will be in good shape. But OKC needs growth from the kid. He has the game. He has the poise. Can he deliver?
How great is it that there is zero interest in Andrew Bynum?! Karma…
Andrew didn’t do himself any favors by telling teams he’s not going to workout for them. But at the end of the day, someone will throw him a good coin. He’s a 7-foot former All-Star who is still relatively young. If Greg Oden is still getting looks, then you know Andrew will eventually.
Hey whats up Lang? The Pistons are going after FA hard. Do you think anyone is going to sign there ;Like Calderon,Smith,Iggy
I think Josh Smith is a legit option. I don’t think they have a shot at Iguodala.
Lang, my dude!
What do you think about this Bennett selection? I had him pre-draft as the player most likely to be a beast in this draft, but I wonder about the fit. I hope they don’t try to roll him out to the 3, and Tristan is already holding the 4 spot down. Do they bring him along slowly off the bench, or move Tristan to the 5 in what would be the most athletic lineup in the league? I’m still not sure what to make of this move; clarify it for me…
Anthony Bennett is a player, man. But I hope he doesn’t fall victim to what so many fall victim … the desire to prove their ability to play a position not suited to their strength. Hate to doubt someone as talented as AB, but if he really is trying to play the 3 full-time (I think its lip service) then he may be in for a struggle.
Lang…im in cincinnati where oj mayo played hs ball with bill walker. He was always billed the next lebron. Obviously that was not the case. Where is a good home for oj?
Also, what is the status on the Laker ownership situation post jerry buss death. Jimmy Buss has shackled mitch and is rumming that team into the ground.
I think Milwaukee will be good for OJ honestly. I know it’s not the glitz and glamour where most expected him to end up … but it is a place where guys can go ball and gain respect. Two shooting guards who earned their chops out there are Michael Redd and Ray Allen. This could be the city which makes him come alive.
Whats good Lang! These Hawks got me scratching my head rite now and it wont’t stop raining in The ATL.
1. I liked the the point PG Dennis we drafted but the 5 we drafted seem to project, even though he has height he’s only 220lbs on a good day. Whats your thought on the players selected by the Hawks.
2. The Hawks will not get Dwight and you were under the impression the Hawks wasnt in rebuilding mode after hearing Danny Ferry. So if we are not rebuilding what in the heck or we doing?
3. I wouldnt mind a front court of Big Al, Josh and Iggy along with Teague and Evans in the back court. your thoughts
My man 3Q! Hope you’re enjoying this summer. Crazy Atlanta weather … won’t stop damn raining man.
1. Very solid pick in both guys. Dennis Schroeder should be able to contribute 10-15 minutes per night immediately. I think Lucas is more of a project, but he has great defensive instincts. I think the name people throw around is Marcus Camby … that type of guy. Marcus was a solid player throughout his career. If the Hawks can get 7/8/2 out of him by the time his rookie contract is over I think they would deem him a success.
If Howard stays in LA or goes to Dallas, could it ever really be “his” team? Hypothetically, next year Lebron or Carmelo may join Dwight. Would it still be “his” team?
I think we make too much out of this “his team” thing. As Nas once rapped “Not positive, who’s the best? Pac, Nas and Big … ain’t no best, East, West, North, South, flossed out, greedy”
I think too much ego is in the game today. Can’t guys just focus on being teammates. Every company has a CEO and COO … guys at the top of the game have the confidence level in their abilities to co-exist.
Martell Webster must have a great agent as he seems to be a little overpaid given the 4 year 22 million dollar deal. If you were the GM of the Washington Wizards, would you have offered him a similar deal / felt compelled to resign this asset. If not, what would be the maximum salary you would have offered over the same 4 years?
John Wall likes the guy from what I hear, plus he’s a solid role player and good locker room presence. Yes, he got a fair amount of coin than what I expected but at the same time the Wizards are investing in some of the other areas we don’t see. Not just stats based. Not all moves are number related.
JJ Reddick or JR Smith. If you were a GM in need of outside shooting / secondary scoring. Who would you target in free agency between the two? And who do you believe will get a larger yearly salary between the two when it’s all said and done.
I would go with the more talented player if I had a team full of established veterans who were willing to police themselves. Younger team, less established … would go with JJ Redick to set the example and tone.
Lang: Who in the world will the Hawks sign to fill out the roster after Dwight turns them down?
I firmly believe if Howard goes to Houston, we will get Asik in a sign and trade for Smoove.
Al Horford reportedly loves Omer Asik, but Houston is saying they’re not shopping him this summer. Time will tell. He would be a good look for Atlanta and allow Al to slide to power forward.
Hey Lang-Man, Longtime Nuggets fan, so bear with me…Andre Miller has been solid all his life, but wants to start (at age 35 and in front of Ty ?) Heard he may be traded this summer, where and for what are the possibilities ? How do your think Erick Green will do ?
I didn’t hear this Andre Miller “start me” demand but if its true he’s losing his mind. Andre Miller is one of the best PGs of his generation. His numbers and productivity speak volumes without me adding adjectives to the sentence … but he’s past it physically and its best for Ty Lawson to hold down lead guard duties.
Welcome to the pros Brad ….
Who are your break-out candidates for 2013-14? (ala Paul George, Jrue Holiday, James Harden this past season)
Jeremy Lamb and Jimmy Butler are two guys that come to mind who will make huge strides compared to last season.
Lang the man! How’s it going?
I know the chances for the hawks signing D12 are slim, but if he somehow did, wouldn’t it be better for the hawks to keep horford and trade smith (via sign and trade) despite smith and Howard being good friends/former teammates? Horford could play his true position, the four and can stretch the floor very well.
Not sure you can get Howard to Atlanta without Smith … unless Chris Paul was coming along. That would be the only way, in my opinion.
