Lang Greene is a NBA Writer for HOOPSWORLD covering the Atlanta Hawks and Eastern Conference. Lang’s chat gets started at 8pm EST every Wednesday.
Hi Lang, question on ATL. Is Horford cool with where the team is at? Has he accepted that he is going to play center (was that overblown)? As a fan, the team is in purgatory right now (good enough for playoffs, but not good enough to compete for championship with no realistic path out), what do you think of the direction Ferry has set?
What’s up Hoop Freaks? Can you believe we’re already in September? My goodness, 2013 is flying by. Pretty open queue tonight, so hit me with what’s on your mind. Let’s work.
Here’s the thing about Al Horford, if he is upset he’s going to put a positive spin on it to the media. He’s polished in that regard. Now, one area where he has always been candid is his desire to play more power forward. He’s not going to demand a trade if he has to play center but he prefers to get some work in at the four spot.
I actually think Danny Ferry is doing a decent job. Some teams unload all veterans and become a lottery squad, others up to reload on the fly. The Hawks chose the latter. It’s a similar model to what worked for the Houston Rockets. Hover around .500, stockpile young assets and keep some cap space to make deals. Then try to hit a home run via trade (James Harden) or free agency (Dwight Howard). The stage is set for Danny to pull off something similar now it’s time to evaluate his closing skills.
Hey Lang, please rank the five worst teams in terms of total wins next year. Mine are Philly, Phoenix, Charlotte, Utah and Sacramento in this order. Orlando and Boston could sneek in. Who do you have? By the way, since you are a Hawks guy. There is no Big Hype about D. Schröder in Germany. Do you think he will have a decent career in the states? Best wishes!!!
My man … I don’t have Charlotte in the list. The Bobcats have improved this offseason. Al Jefferson isn’t going to win any internet forum popularity contests, but the guy is a 20/10 threat every single night. He was the asset a club like Charlotte needed around its young core of Kemba Walker, MKG, Gerald Henderson and Biyombo.
I have Orlando, Phoenix and Philadelphia definitely as the teams rounding up the rear next season. You can make cases for Boston and Sacramento here too. But we may also see some surprise teams on this list … teams we expect to make playoff runs if things don’t open up strong (cleveland, milwaukee, minnesota, etc.)
If Schroder shows some real promise early, do you see the Hawks entertaining trade offers for Teague or Lou?
No. The team will hold on to both assets unless a trade arises they can’t possibly refuse. Teague and Lou Williams both have cap friendly contracts. Both guys are entering or in their prime. No need to ship either because a rookie shows glimpses of promise.
Hey Greene, what’s up?
1) What do you think of Lakers signing Shawne Williams? I know we have no money but I’m always suspect of a so called 3pt specialist who has shot below average from 3 more often than not in his career and only had ONE great 3p shooting season?
2) What team do you think would be best for Beasley? Despite my doubts I’d really love to see him on OKC (needs another scorer), Memphis (ditto, specifically a shooter) or the Lakers ( just need talent…) in that order. I can’t see none happening but my Lakers who allegedly were interested in him before.
What’s up bro?
1. The Lakers are in the market for athletic wing players who could fit Mike D’Antoni’s system. Period. Last season he didn’t have the personnel to truly implement some portions of his attack. This summer the Lakers have added Nick Young, Williams, Welsey Johnson and Elias Harris.
2. Actually a team like Miami could absorb the kid and provide structure with minimal impact to their roster. So could San Antonio. But I doubt either situation happens. Word is the Lakers don’t have interest. On NBA 2K14 it would be a match made in heaven … but in reality might not be the best for the Lakers or Beas …
Beasley got waived, not a suprise. But do you think other teams will sign him now even tho he is alot of trouble, or will he get camp invites at best?
I don’t expect anyone to make a rushed decision to sign Beasley, but I have no doubt in my mind the guy will resurface in the league again. No doubt. He’s not even 25 yet. Maybe a couple of solid campaigns overseas will need to happen. Maybe he sits this season out. Whatever the case, Beasley will be back in the league.
Lang, so LBJ claims this new TV show about an 18 year old kid making it out isn’t autobiographical? Really…not even “loosely” I’m not buying his snake oil on this one.
Beasley…what can you say about that? It’s gonna cost the Sun’s some money over the next few years..BUT on the positive side, a cancer is out, they are in rebuilding mode and will likely finish up with better Lottery odds this way for two years anyway? It makes sense?
I read the release, it seems as though the series would center around two cousins. Honestly, I don’t have a problem with it actually. Who better to tell the story of making it out of the trapping of the inner city than LeBron James who is living proof. It will definitely get a view from me if it comes to fruition. I am a product of Paterson, NJ. Not a lot of guys who I grew up with are in a strong position right now … if they’re alive at all.
Beasley got into some trouble but when you hear stuff like this you have to think there was more simmering behind the scenes. For the Suns to eat that type of money for what Beasley is allegedly charged with is can be questioned. But I think the move was right for both parties and I’m anxious to see if Beasley can resurrect his career. The script / stage is set for a triumphant comeback.
What’s up Lang,
The Bucks are signing and bringing back guys that actually want to be there. Do you think this is a playoff team?
By the way, I hope you check my novel. FORWARD MOTION! It’s a Basketball Murder Mystery which will be posted free for the 1st 3 days on Amazon in a few days.
What’s up Win?
I’m in the minority on this but I actually fell the Bucks have had a pretty decent summer. They secure a guy like O.J. Mayo who will be a much better fit than Brandon Jennings and Monta Ellis. They extend Larry Sanders. They bring in veterans like Luke Ridnour and Zaza Pachulia who played there in the past and don’t have a problem going back.
I’m not sure if I’m ready to call playoffs just yet. They have a lot of new pieces and a new head coach calling the shots. It all depends on how they gel.
I’m interested in hearing more about your book (and getting an autographed copy). Hit me at LGreene-at-HOOPSWORLD.com
Lebron is on PEDs. You know it. I know it. The NBA wont do anything because he’s their poster boy.
Not going to co-sign this in any way, shape or form. Stop hating without proof. The testing will begin soon but until then not going to start accusing guys of stuff. That’s irresponsible and I’m not down w/ that.
Here is a thought/question/conspiracy theory?
So for the past 2 years when there where rumors about Lakers trading Bynum he kept saying that he wants to play in cleavland.
Also one of dwight choices was Houston 2 years back as well.
We all know that howard and bynum are good friends and work out together in the summer. Do u think they orchestrated this the whole time at the expense of lakers and Philli? Im not sure that they did but it sure looks like it to me.
This is the night for conspiracies I see. Lol. Let’s see what you got cooking.
No I don’t. Bynum was truly hurt. If he was healthy and putting in his usual 17/12 per night the Sixers would have ponied up big money to keep him there. Bynum grew up nearby in New Jersey so I think it would have made sense. But since he was injured the Sixers decided to cut ways. Bynum didn’t cut ties w/ them and that’s important to note.
I truly think Howard’s first choice was likely Brooklyn. But that window slammed shut a good deal back. Houston is built a little better for the future right now. I think Howard chose to roll with a younger, fresh and more hip team … with yes, a little less pressure than Los Angeles. Nothing wrong with that line of thinking.
Good evening Lang, hope all your family ladies doing fine. I read with interest your article today focusing on TOR, but also mentioning other possible 13/14 East playoff candidates- for seeds #6-8 (most everybody agrees on your top-5 of MIA/IND/CHI/BKN/NYK- (my order)); by default you have BOS/CHA/ORL/PHI (alphabetically) as 12th-15th finishers in East; that leaves your article’s: ATL/CLE/DET/MIL/TOR/WAS (again alpha’ed) in #6-8 mix; to me that is too many; I see ATL as in 13/14 playoffs, that leaves me with 5 teams for 2 spots; I now foresee CLE and WAS as in, with DET/TOR ready to slip in if those 2 falter (thus MIL as out); am I pretty close to how you currently see it?
The ladies are doing well. Nice and full tonight. Hope you are well my brother.
Good breakdown and I’m in agreement. I definitely feel one or two of those teams won’t have nearly the breakthrough many are projecting. My thought that would be Milwaukee and Cleveland. But each team has issues to make me worry. Here’s a quick rundown …
ATL – new coach .. can he get buy-in from the players? Can Paul Millsap replace Josh Smith? Can Paul provide a defensive presence where Sith anchored the Hawks. How soon will Lou Williams be ready? Can Schroeder contribute any? How much does Elton Brand have left …
TOR – lots of guys here essentially in contract years … like Dwane Casey, Kyle Lowry and Rudy Gay. Will it be about the team if things get off to a slow start? Or will it become a me-first circus?
DET – Josh Smith, Monroe, Drummond, Jennings … plenty of talent … but whew … where in the world is the jump shooting? Expect defenses to sag on thisteam and dare them to be great from the perimeter. Kyle Singler can ball but he doesn’t have enough marksmanship to handle all of their three-point needs
WAS – how good is John Wall? He was unstoppable late last season. Can he put it together for a full 82?
Rudy Gay..stay or gone in free agency?
$19.3 million is a lot of money to walk away from in today’s NBA … under the new collective bargaining agreement. But we saw Andre Iguodala turn down $16 million and cash in with a $40+ million deal this summer. So for my money if Gay makes an All-Star appearance he will opt out looking to secure a multi-year deal from Toronto (or another franchise) next summer
Hi Lang, ATL currently has 14 players under contract, notably not including 2013′s #16 pick: Lucas Nogueira. How did he do in Las Vegas Summer League? Do you expect him on 13/14 Hawk roster or will they let him mature, being only 20 years old, in Spanish League another year?
Lucas is headed back overseas. He did okay during summer league but he needs to add bulk and become more active away from the ball. But he looks like he’s going to be a future asset for Atlanta down the line.
with some legit pieces around him now and a healthy love, do you think rubio shows us what everyone has been waiting for? id love to see him play like an elite point guard
The pressure is on Kevin Love in Minnesota. That’s the guy I have my eyes on. If he wants to be considered elite he has to carry a team to the playoffs. He has the All-Star appearances, Olympic gold medal and gaudy regular season stats … time to push the T’Wolves over the top. I believe he can do it … but my belief isn’t a reality.
Rubio is a strong PG, not sure if he’ll ever break into the top three in the league discussion at his position. But he’s a very good floor general who just needs improve his outside shot.
How long do you give it before Eric Bledsoe is solidified as the 1 and Goran Dragic is traded? Before the end of the season? Or, will they continue to suck for a good draft pick
Bledsoe has the hype machine behind him but a lot of guys have failed making the transition from being a ballyhooed reserve standout to full-time starter. I don’t see the Suns doing anything with Dragic until they’re fully confident Bledsoe can handle the reigns of the offense full-time.
Where do you see Afflalo being most welcomed terms of need? & on the flipside, who do you think the Magic could get for him that would best fit their most pressing need?
A team like San Antonio or Detroit could definitely use a guy Afflalo on their roster. But he’s an integral part of Orlando’s rebuilding plan and produces strong at a decent cap number. I don’t see Orlando trading him this season.
Hey there Lang, been a while now.
Soooo…hypothetical, haha. New York Knicks on a losing streak and s**t breaks loose in that locker room… now WHO WINS that brawl? You got Kenyon, Metta, A’Mare, J.R, even Melo can do some damage, Tys, and imagine Sheed was still there? Who wins this Royal Rumble?
Lol … what’s up man? In that brawl I’m rolling with Queensbridge bay-bee. Metta World Peace … all day.
About a month ago you wrote an article/post on The New York Knicks Title chances depending on J.R. Smith being consistent..this was prior to the additions of MWP and Beno Udrih..(key role players with rings..)..a couple of weeks later I asked did you think that Melo have enough around him to compete for a Title and possibly finish the job…you said you don’t see it because Melo needed a #2….so My question is what was the point of the J.R. Smith article(hits..)..if we are deeper now..probably 1 of the deepest Teams in The NBA..and is it really a necessity if you have 5 or maybe even 6 guys that can get you 15+ a night……….
Well here’s the deal …
J.R. Smith IS pivotal to the Knicks’ title chances, like I wrote. But if you ask me can they win one with him as the No. 2 guy my answer would be no. My opinion. Now, since my comment is just my opinion, it is possible the Knicks could indeed make a title run next season. That’s why the games are played on the court and not on computer keyboards.
The Knicks will be deeper. Bargnani and Metta World Peace give them even more options in the frontcourt alongaside Amar’e. Shumpert is a year older. Beno Udrih is a solid, very solid, guard. Getting him to play a reserve role at the vet minimum was a steal. It will be interesting to see if the Knicks can put it all together.
