How much sense does this trade make. Bulls send Lou Deng, Noah, Korver and a first round pick in 2012 for Dwight Howard and Hedo? Orlando gets a young center that is secured for at least five years and a 20 pt a game scorer also in his prime, as well as a 3pt specialist. Bulls get a championship centerpiece and someone who can take the ball from rose and become a play maker so rose doesnt have to handle the ball consistently. He hit a wall in those playoffs and sometimes it is hard driving the ball into big bodies day in and day out, takes a lot out of you in a seven game series. Fair trade?
Welcome everyone to another chat, I’ve got a lot of questions already so I’ll try and get to as many as possible. Also, follow me on Twitter @MarkNugentNBA.
The Bulls won’t trade for Howard because he has given no indication he would consider signing there long-term. If Howard were to come out and say he would re-sign with the Bulls then Chicago would likely put together a package similar to what you mentioned, but until Howard says something (or his people do) about him re-signing in Chicago the Bulls will not make a move for him.
Is now the ideal time for the pacers to approach Houston for kevin Martin? Think he would be ideal there playing with granger, collison, and now west. Offers a formidable top 3 offensive options and rounded out with a huge defensive center role player with a soft touch around the rim and a speedy point guard whose a natural play maker.
I think the Pacers are probably pretty set with their roster at the moment, but Martin would be a great fit. The question is what would they have to give up to get him. Most likely Roy Hibbert. That would hurt the Pacers and I’m not sure it makes sense for them long-term. He’s their only real center. My guess is the Pacers are pretty much set to start the season.
so…now what for the rockets? seems like we are running out of possible moves to improve the team and seems like team morale is pretty low
I would have to think Morale is very low. The Rockets seem to want to completely start over and build around a young big man, but they are having zero luck. My understanding is they wanted to get Gasol and pair him with a maxed out Nene. Now they are stuck, I could see them having a firesale at the trade deadline. That’s just my speculation, but at some point they are going to have to completely rebuild.
Mark, what do you make of the Warriors’ moves thus far this offseason? Saying no to the Curry-Paul deal without an extension from Paul, waiving Lin and Bell, $43m/4yrs offer to Jordan? Is there a move that you would encourage the Warriors to make?
I would have trade Curry for Paul, if Paul was willing to opt-in instead of opting-out for the last year of his contract. I would not of worried about Paul long-term as much, if I could guarantee at least two seasons from him. Paul would have been perfect next to Ellis, Lee, and even Biedrins. Unfortunately, that didn’t happen. It still could at the deadline, but I doubt it.
I don’t think there was really any other move they could have made this offseason that would have really helped them, other than the Paul trade. I’m no fan of Kwame Brown, but it’s a one year deal, which was very smart.
Bledsoe Aminu Kaman Mo Min pick 13 and 15 picks for cp3 ariza, way more than what NOLA can get anywhere else, plus flexibility with the mo/ariza swap..do you know for sure if EG was offered in previous attempts?
No one knows for sure if Gordon was offered or not, but the most reports say the Hornets had the choice of either the Minny pick OR Gordon. If I’m the Hornets I take Gordon, Aminu, Kaman, Mo Williams and a lower pick for CP3 and Ariza. That is not only the best deal they can get, but I am a huge fan of Gordon and think he is a borderline all-star.
If the Bulls do sign Rip Hamilton, would that be enough to dethrone the Miami Heat.
It appears they did sign him, KC Johnson has been reporting that the Bulls expect Rip at practice tomorrow. I think it makes the Bulls better, but the HEAT got a little better as well by adding Battier. I’ll say what I said last year, I expect the Bulls to have a better record than the HEAT, and in the playoffs it will all come down to how the games are officiated. If Rose is going to the line 6 times a game, and LeBron and Wade are going a combined 25, the Bulls will lose. If that is closer to a 10 and 18 split, then I think the Bulls can/should win.
Josh mcroberts a poor man’s Kevin love?
very, very VERY poor man’s, maybe. Love is 6’11′ and big. McRoberts is kinda scrawny for a PF and way too small to play center.
hey mark now that the lakers are apparently back on cp3 do you see them going to the rockets again to help them land paul?.Houston has young talent and draft picks that might interest the hornets.
I’m sure the Lakers will do everything they can to land either Paul or Howard and they will give up whatever is necessary.
josh smith & marvin wlliams for brook lopez travis outlaw & jordan farmar…
No one wants Marvin or Outlaw, and the Nets won’t trade a cheap Lopez for an expensive Smith. I think the Hawks would jump at the chance to rid themselves of those contracts AND bring back a starting center.
After the lakers got hit with the stern burn, then traded odom to the mavs thus releasing a big bargaining chip. do you think stern will take bynum for cp3 straight up?
No I don’t. I think Stern wants lots of pieces, not just one. Plus Bynum is a long-term contract, which I think the Hornets are trying to avoid unless it is for a true star.
A.iguodala,kirk hinrich 2 Orlado magic
J.nelson, elton brand 2 atlata hawks
M.williams,Q.richardson,josh smith,J.richardson 2 76ers
I can’t really see why the 76ers would ever do this. I think this makes them considerably worse. It’s great for the Magic and Hawks, but there is little chance the 76ers would even consider it.
Ur toughts t-wolves interest in k-mart/other Beasley /others
Rashard mcCants making the Lakers from camp
Nets plans -d12 ,draft?
thx. Lets go Knicks!!!!!!!
Haven’t heard anything about any of the guys still in China, those rumors will heat up come February.
I’m still waiting for Redd to sign somewhere. I would have thought someone would have grabbed him for the league minimum already.
Mark, When & If The Bulls Sign Rip. What Do You Think There Next Move Will Be. Do You Think They Offer Micheal Redd The Vets Minimum. I Think That Would Be A Fantastic Signing For Them Or Do You Think They Go After Joel Pryzbilla
I think the Bulls go after a big. Gar Forman even said as much at media day. My guess is they make an offer to Pryzbilla first and then look at some other bigs, Elson maybe. With Hamilton on board, I don’t think they go after Redd.
If R.balkman isn’t the same as he was when he was drafted and has no trade value.y can’t we buy him out and put the money toward Jamal c I hate to do the same or package b.walker but is that a thought or opinion to make space rather than Atlanta.s&t proposal
The Knicks with ‘Melo, Stoudemire, and Chandler are over the cap and they amnestied Billups. So they can’t spend any more then the mini exception that is 2.5 million. It doesn’t matter what they do with Balkman, so they might as well keep him.
Pacers seem to want a shooting guard. Doesn’t George Hill fit that need, and would Crawford or Mayo really been an upgrade?
Hill is really a combo guard who is best suited to coming off the bench. He is only 6’2” and not physically strong enough to play heavy minutes at the 2, in my opinion. Mayo would be, I’m a big fan (except of his attitude). Crawford is a bench scorer and I don’t believe he would start. I think the Pacers are really looking for a 6th man which both Mayo and Crawford would likely be. I think Paul George is there starter at the 2 this year.
Mark, Utah Jazz fan here. Was really hoping that AK is resigned this year to start next to Hayward. Caron got 8m per, I think thats a good amount for AK esp after he was a max player forever. What do you hear/know about AK resigning? I’m DEFINITELY resistant to Josh Howard coming in; I think he’ll just be a disappointment(slow, no athleticism anymore).
I hear that AK-47 is more interested in staying in Russia than returning to the states. Also, if someone offered him 8 million per, he would be here in a heartbeat. I think he’d probably come back if someone offered him the full mid-level exception. He is realistically looking at 3-5 million per, and probably only 2 years.
Howard would be cheap and low risk. the Jazz could cut him at any time with little penalty.
if the nets arent able to land dwight howard, what do they have to show for their off-season with a ton of cap space, shelden “the landlord” williams? is the effort that they’ve put into free agency enough for deron williams to believe that this management can build him a core group to go all the way?
If they don’t land Howard either this year or during the offseason, they have nothing to show for their cap room. They are pushing all in on Howard, I believe, and that is why they didn’t make any significant offers to free agents, like Nene.
is there a better candidate than the suns for the 14th pick in the draft? or will a full shortened season with Gortat in the middle, nash and hill fighting and surprisingly winning against father time be enough for them to reach the play-offs as an 8th seed? right now im projecting 7 teams to make the play-offs in the west, in no order, dallas, san antonio, memphis, portland, oklahoma, and both LA teams.
Of last year’s playoff teams, I think New Orleans misses, and I think both Denver and Portland will be near the bottom and may also miss. I think the Clippers make it, and I think Golden State has an outside shot, As does Houston, as does Phoenix. If I had to bet on the 8th seed I’d probably go with Houston, but with all the potential trades on the horizon, a lot teams could look different come the end of the season.
when he was still in college and playing for australia, i saw patrick mills do a jj barea and just score on team USA’s all-star selection of athletic and fast defenders. what has prevented him from showcasing that sort of ability in the league? is the injury he got in last year in college that bad?
It’s not easy to crack the lineup of a NBA playoff team. Mills has been blocked by veterans and Nate McMillan isn’t building for the future, he’s in win now mode.
who do you think will be memphis’ first option on offense, zach randolph or rudy gay? do you think rudy can get into the next level by letting zach get more touches and use more energy on defense where he has all-defense team potential? and what does mcrobert bring to the table that darell arthur doesnt?
I think the Grizzlies will try to run, which means Conley and their guards will get out on the break and then in the half court sets I think Randolph and Gasol will be the top two options. It worked in the playoffs so that’s what I expect them to do this season.
They failed to land McRoberts, and I’m not sure he’s better than Arthur, so I have no idea why they wanted him in the first place.
with josh smith dropping the weight, do you believe he can move back to his old position of small-forward? and if he does, who starts at center, zaza pachulia? jason collins?
I don’t believe he is a good enough perimeter shooter to play the three in the NBA, it can work if you have a stretch four, but the Hawks don’t. I think the Hawks are stuck with Smith playing most of his minutes at the four.
Remember when Chicago offered Gordon a long term deal that Gordon turned down hoping for something more lucrative only to find the deal no longer available the following year? Is Rodney Stuckey going to be along the same lines?
I believe the Stuckey deal was around 5 years and 40 million, and he ‘balked’ at it according to sources. I think Stuckey should jump at that deal and happy someone was stupid enough to give him a long-term extension like that. There is some talk Stuckey may sign the one year offer so he can become an unrestricted free agent this offseason. If he does, that would be a huge lucky break for the Pistons. If Stuckey doesn’t sign this deal, I think he is going to lose lots of money.
So whats the word on Iverson, has any team shown interest or is it safe to say he is officially retired?
I don’t believe he’s gotten a camp invite yet, and I believe his days in the NBA are over.
Why pay K.Brown so much? Wouldn’t Dalembert be a better big or is it because it’s a 1 yr deal. Any thruth to Monta to Orlando, I assume J.Rich would be going back to GS. Any teams looking at Arenas?
Dalembert isn’t interested in a one year deal, he want’s the most years and money possible.
Richardson can’t be traded right away, he just signed his deal.
I haven’t heard anything on Arenas except he’d like to play with Howard next year. I suspect he will land on a team, but it will be for the minimum, the Nets and Hornets make sense because they don’t have a lot of players on the roster currently.
I don’t think Portland is gonna get anything valuable from this trade.. They surely are thinking about trading G.Wallace for picks or Bench player to let merge Nic Batum, I still think K.Humphries will be ST to blazers.
a Trade including D12 Duhon or Richardson and Turkoglu’s contracts for both Wallace and Lopez is not a bad moove from O.Smith. A Davis-Lopez if not dominant will be at least ok. Your Thoughts?
This is all talk right now, I don’t expect the Blazers to trade Wallace, I think he at least starts the season with Portland. Also, I hate it that they would trade Wallace for some unlikely to be high draft picks and cap space. Wallace is good and the Blazers should be a playoff team with their current roster.
Do you think Ben Gordon will have a bounce back year? He used to be my favorite player what happened to him in Detroit, too many guards or the coach didn’t use him properly?
Too many guards, and he didn’t have the freedom that he had in Chicago, be careful what you wish for as they say. I don’t expect him to have a huge bounce back year, I think he needs to get out of Detroit and get on at team where he can just be unleashed as a sixth man.
bulls signing hamilton instead of crawford do you think thats a mistake?
not a huge Crawford fan. High volume shooter with bad percentages and is an indifferent defender. Rip is a low volume shooter with high percentages and while it’s unlikely his D is great, he puts in the effort. I like the move.
do you think bulls get the #1 seed this year or are you under the impression of everyone on espn that its pretty much miami and then everyone else
I think they get the number 1 seed in the east because of their depth. I still think the HEAT are the favorites to win it all right now though.
the knicks desperately need a another guard i dont think the need a pg the knicks need sg like dahntay jones hes likely the odd man out in indiana because they have to many wings the knicks could get him for a 2nd rd pick and cash is this possible?
Not sure the Pacers will trade a cheap backup like Jones. I think the Knicks are kind of stuck at the moment.
if the pacers sign crawford does tht mean brandon rush dahntay jones lance stevenson are on thier way out?
It seems like the Pacers are out of the running for Crawford. I believe he narrowed it down to Portland, Sac-town, and NYK.
why havent the knicks signed shawne williams? he can score off the bench and should be able to more with increase playing time which is like because harrelson and jordan are rookies
They are waiting on Crawford. Once Crawford makes his decision that will determine if the Knicks keep Williams or not.
it seems like all summer the only guards you heard aboutwere josh selby and iman shumpert do you think either be better than most think they are?
I think both will be ok, and most likely bench guys. Selby is undersized for a 2 guard, and not really a passer, so he will almost definitely be coming off the bench most of his career.
Shumpert is a little bigger and has the potential to play either PG or SG, so I think between the two he definitely has the better shot at starting one day.
would the knicks try to get toney parker in exchange for douglas if the spurs start rebuilding this season if they dont start off good?
I’m sure the Knicks would love that, but that won’t happen.
Who do the tpups go after now that we got JJ? Mayo, K Martin, Ellis, Crawford? Other? And who do we have to give that other people want (that is not named K Love or proabably Dwilliams and Rubio)!
I don’t think the ‘Wolves go after anyone at the moment, I think they maybe look to move Beasley or one of there other forwards. They have a logjam at the 3/4 and clearing some room could help them a lot this season.
why cant the sixers get in the mix for d howard or cp3? They have as much young talent as any team in the league, then you throw in iggs.
because neither has said they would consider re-signing there, so why would they gut there team just for a one year rental?
I personally think, that Howard will become a free agent after this season if nothing special happens. And for this i expect him to sign with the Mavs, maybe followed by Deron Williams.
And for this upcoming season i think the Mavs will have another shot for championship. I think they made the right roster changes to keep the team motivate but still have good chances for free agency coming 2012.
What are your thoughts?
I don’t think the Mavs will win a championship, but they will be in the playoffs and be competitive, but I doubt they can get it done with either Dirk or Haywood at the center.
As for Howard, I believe he either signs with the Nets or the Mavs during the offseason, that’s my best guess. And i think where ever Howard ends up I think either Paul or Williams ends up as well.
Why arent free agent enticed to come to Chicago with D-Rose?
I don’t know. Some players seem to want to be recruited by stars, and Rose doesn’t do that. So that could be part of the problem.(by the way, I love it that Rose doesn’t do that) Also, lots of star players WANT to be the man, and that is clearly Rose in Chicago. Plus it’s crazy freezing here during the season!!!
Projecting the next 3 years are there any can’t miss lottery prospects on the horizon ie Dwight Howard ,Lebron James that the Hornets fan base can look forward to hopefully landing?
I think Anthony Davis is about as can’t miss as you can get. I’m not saying he’ll definitely be a superstar, but he’ll be at least a starter in the NBA, barring injury. Shabazz Muhammed has gotten a lot of hype to, but I won’t judge until I see him in college, but he seems pretty can’t miss as well.
Regardless of whether or not the trade actually happens. If you were the GM of the Hornets, would you prefer the Minnesota pick or Eric Gordon in a trade package for Chris Paul. Its easy to answer Gordon, but next year’s draft is STACKED!!! And that pick is almost guaranteed Top 5.
Gordon, and it’s not even close. There is an outside chance the ‘Wolves fight for the playoffs, whereas Gordon is a potential all-star. I love Gordon and would take him in a heartbeat.
If you were the GM of an NBA team, which aging point guard would you prefer to sign at the veteran’s minimum and why: TJ Ford, Mike Bibby, or Jamal Tinsley
probably Bibby. he can knock down the three and doesn’t have the injury history of Tinsley or Ford.
Do you think Eddie Curry will play any significant minutes in the playoffs for the Miami Heat this year?
Why don’t clipps go for Dwight? They were linked to say they were going after him right?
They were, but I don’t think they got the sense he would consider re-signing with them, so they went after Paul instead. Plus it has always seemed like the Magic haven’t been serious about trading Howard, while it’s clear the Hornets are looking to deal Paul.
I don’t think i do the clip/NO trade either way. you are giving up a top 10 center (who is also a expiring), young prospect, above average PG and a pick that is very likely top 5. that is just to much. whats ur take also, friend said clip pick included they get that deal done yesterday!
The problem is the Clippers won’t trade Gordon and the Minny Pick, which is what the Hornets are asking for. If I’m the Hornets I would make a deal with the Clippers, Gordon, Bledsoe, Aminu, and Kaman is a solid deal, maybe if the Clippers thru in a future first rounder as well.
Hey what you think about the raps… do you think the core of derozan, Ed Davis and bargnani is good enough? And should raptors be sellers in terms of the long term picture? build up thru draft may be a year or 2… where do you project demar and Davis two years from now?
I like what the Raps are doing, minus the Amir Johnson contract, but I still think they need a true star in order to compete. If they could land Barnes or Davis they would have a core that should be in the playoffs for the next several years.
Will the Mavericks add Dalembert or Pryzbill with their trade exceptions?
Doubtful, both are free agents, and are likely to sign somewhere
Hey let’s say lakers don’t land d12 nor cp3… how would this have an impact on Kobe… should kobe demand a trade or amnesty. I know it sounds crazy but look at what they lost… they made a huge mess with odom and gasol and brought down the team morale. And fisher, don’t know if he’s a starter in the league. Could we see a Kobe move is lakers lose out in big names?
Kobe won’t demand a trade or amnesty, he has no leverage. he will complain a lot when the Lakers struggle this season because Odom is gone. i think this is going to be a bad year for the Lakers and they don’t have any cap room next year, so in effect I believe they just wasted two years on the back end of Kobe’s prime.
Magic Fan Here. What Package could we offer either Philly for Iggy or Golden State for Monta?
JJ Redick and Nelson? Nothing too exciting that’s for sure.
So is O-town always going to be an NBA farm town for young superstars as well as the last stop before retirement?
At this point, everywhere but New York and LA is like that. So it’s quite possible that continues. By all accounts Howard wants to stay in Orlando, but he also wants to win. So if the Magic can put one or two more pieces together they believe they will be able to convince Howard to re-sign with them.
I would like us to push all our chips in the table to land either Monta Ellis or Iggy from Philly
US? is that the Bulls? or the Magic? The Bulls won’t take on that salary, there is too much risk with the stiffer luxury tax penalties.
Denver overpaid for Nene
I agree, but they wanted to keep him and that was the only way that was going to happen.
Rip to CHI = best team in the league by far, probably the best 10 man rotation in the league, great D, probably the best starting lineup in the league, etc. CHI can win the ’12 NBA championship.
I believe the Bulls have the best lineup 1-10 in the league, I believe the HEAT have the best starting lineup in the league with the Thunder and Bulls second. I absolutely believe the Bulls can win the title this year and I think it will come down to them and the HEAT in the East. I also believe the Bulls will again have the best record in the NBA because of their depth.
I saw an article comparing amir johnson’s and deandre jordan’s stats last year. they are similar in many areas. Yet Jordan will make a lot more $. If you are a C in the NBA you’ll get paid.
Being a center, and being athletic and competent, are big pluses in the NBA and it’s the hardest position to fill. Therefore, you have to pay to get one.
I heard from a site that George Karl would give Rudy Fernandez the starting spot in Denver. Does that mean Affalo will leave Denver? Maybe Affalo goes to Indiana? Scary – Collison,AA,Granger,West,Hibbert.
I see them both starting maybe. I could see Rudy at the three, Afflalo at the 2, and Galinari at the Four, with Nene at the five. The Nuggets are in talks with Afflalo and they seem confident they will sign him to an extension.
Will Jamal Crawford land in Portland? SAK will have Jimmer/Tyreke/MT
I think he ends up in Portland. He doesn’t seem as interested in going to Sacramento because they are unlikely to compete for the playoffs, while Portland is. So unless the Kings make a big offer I think he ends up with the Blazers. I don’t think he ends up with the Knicks because they can only offer 2.5, compared to the Blazers 5.
Hey what you think about Harrison Barnes… is he overrated or is it the system he’s in? I like Jeremy lamb reminds me of Reggie miller but is he athletic enough?
I love Barnes, i think he will be at least as good as Joe Johnson, who is an all-star.
I think Lamb will be at least a NBA starter.
will the lakers get paul or maybe milsap or laundry
I don’t think they get any of them this year. They have two assets, Bynum and Gasol and I don’t think those two will bring back as much as the Lakers think.
what about this trade – Gordon, Minny Pick and Kaman (expiring) for Paul?
The Clippers have been adamant that they won’t trade Gordon and the Minny Pick. I’d do that in a nanosecond if I was the Hornets.
Mr. Nugent, you just said the “Minnesota Timberwolves will fight for the playoffs” this year. Really?? No one and their brother think the Wolves are going to finish outside the bottom three in the west this year. Please justify the statement.
NO! I said there is an outside chance they could fight for the playoffs. They have a lot of talent, and now they have one of my favorite coaches. There is no reason they can’t be better than they were last year and I could see them being in the hunt for the playoffs until the last 5-10 games of the season, which would be a huge improvement from last year.
