Join senior NBA and NCAA editor Yannis Koutroupis for his weekly chat this Friday May 24 at 7 pm est!
Yannis homie, you talking bout Kidd gildcrest was better than Harrison Barnes is looking real real shaky bro..HB just a jump shooter huh? Still feel that way? Didn’t think so but I’m sure you’ll come up with something to justify it. Just man up and say you was trippen homie!
Welcome everyone to this week’s chat! Let’s get right to it.
The only guarantee I’ve ever made is that I will be wrong. I only ask that you re-read this: http://www.hoopsworld.com/nba-draft-barnes-vs-kidd-gilchrist, then tweet me @YannisHW and tell me how off base I was. The draft is not an exact science, it’s tough – but, I think it’s important to realize how much better of a position to succeed Barnes was in comparison to MKG. We’re one year into what I expect to be 10+ year careers, so it’s too early to make any serious judgements. As I wrote then, Barnes was clearly the more NBA ready of the two.
How do u think will coach the Detroit pistons this year u think it be brain Shaw since Phil Jackson in Detroit.
I absolutely think so and have been saying so as soon as Phil was brought on to consult. I think they’re going through the process now to explore all options, but I can’t see how Shaw doesn’t end up with the job.
Who do u think Joe Dimers should draft to turn the pistons around.
They’re in a tough spot. They need a three, but Porter will be long gone by the time they pick. C.J. McCollum makes a lot of sense, I wouldn’t be surprised to see them go with him, or Shabazz Muhammad if he is on the board. Shabazz can play some three I think, but he’s most ideally suited for the two.
I am a long time Laker fan but a realistic one at that. I think the only way Howard stays in L.A.is if he thinks that the health issues might arise and a 5 year deal is worth more than a 4 year deal. Kobe is not going to be healthy by start of the season ask Billups and Brand. My question is should the Lakers go into rebuilding mode this year. Let Howard walk or maybe sign and trade with New Jersey (Lopez would be great for the next 4 years even at 15m- trade Gasol for maybe a pick and a player and just start new in 2014 with pick and ample cap space rather than try to bring everybody back win maybe 58 games and flame out in the second round. What do you think?
I too grew up a Laker fan and am really torn about what direction the franchise should go in. It’s tough. They’re not exactly in a flexible position, and their best path is likely determined by whatever decision Howard makes. If he stays, you build around him and are all about the championship. If he’s not staying, you have to factor in the value of sign-and-trading him in a deal that you have very little leverage in. I think they need to try and keep Howard, but if he walks I think they can rebound from it. Mitch always seems to have something up his sleeve, I’m sure he’s going to go into the offseason trying to execute plans we haven’t even thought of yet.
i heard howard considering warriors but who would lakers get in a sign and trade
Don’t think they could work out a deal. I don’t see how they could entice the Lakers. Thompson+Barnes and some draft picks would be nice, but it’s not a must-make move for the Lakers. May be better off saving cap space and exploring free agent options in 2015.
whats your top 10 mock draft
What will the Charlotte Hornets do with the number four pick (assuming Ben McLemore is off the board)? I think we are in prime position to make a deal with a team that wants Oladipo. I could see Charlotte taking him and then trading him to a team for Alex Len and another asset. What do you think the team should do?
They can’t afford to go with another promising rookie who will be at his best in a few years. They need someone who can help now. If they can get a NBA ready guy like Oladipo, it’s worth considering. I’m not sure how great the offers are going to be for him, honestly. This isn’t a draft where teams are going to give up a ton to move up.
Despite what Gilbert says in interviews post draft thinking they have a chance of playoffs next year there plan really looks like this right?
Take Noel 1st, dont add any free agents of note in offseason, save up cap space for 2014, Trade Andy V come Dec/Jan when Noel comes back for future picks, ride Noel/Zeller at C all the way back into top 5 lottery pick for next year and then pick up the SF they are looking for.
2014 Roster looks like this – Irving, Waiters, 2014 pick, Thompson, Noel… with alot of free agency dollars to through around.
Sound like a promising future?
Yeah, sometimes making the playoffs isn’t always the best thing (see: 2011-12 Utah Jazz). I think that’s an intriguing plan, but if they can flip the number one pick and pieces to Portland for LaMarcus Aldridge, you scrap that plan and take the current All-Star. I doubt Portland does that, but I know Cleveland is looking for a big name and Portland is considering all options.
Rumor have it Mavs want out of the 1st round to maximise cap space for CP3/Dwight… Think Cavs could be a good partner here? 31 & 33 are non guaranteed cap space picks right? Maybe 31&33 plus a future 2nd rounder for Mavs 13th?
Mavs get cap space, Cavs get more depth without giving up a lot?
I’m on board from both sides.
Another one for you, NOP dosnt really want Gordon, they just didnt wanna lose him for nothing last year. How does this sound:
NOP Gordon to PHO for #5 & Gortat
NOP Gortat to OKC for Perkins, PJIII & future pick
Fillers as required
Pelicans get more young assets, Perkins as a locker room presence (he isnt going to do much) plus they also get the chance to stink for the 2014 draft and add another nice piece next year
PHO gets the man they targeted last year, Gordons knees help up through the year, plus they arnt going to get someone better than Gordon in this years draft
OKC gets rid of some redundant pieces and a massive upgrade at C
You lost me at some team willingly trading for Kendrick Perkins. Before that I wasn’t that opposed.
why is Shabazz Muhammad dropping last year everyone had him going #1
A year older than everyone expected hurts him, as does the fact that for the first time since he became a nationally-ranked player, he wasn’t the best player on the floor. He’s a little bit more limited offensively at a high level than most thought he would be, but I still think he’s a top eight talent.
Rudy Gobert,Dennis Schroeder,Dario Saric,Sergey Karasev,Lucas Nogueira,Mouhammadou Jaiteh,Livio Jean-Charles can you give me a time frame for each like when can we see these overseas players in the nba
Gobert-Immediately, Schoreder-Immediately, Saric-$1.5 million buyout (reasonable enough to think he comes if drafted top 15), Karasev – not certain, but I think he will be able to come right over, Schroeder – immediately, Nogueira – immediately I believe, but not positive, Jaiteh – immediately, Livio Jean-Charles – under contract until 15-16, buyout terms unknown.
whats your view on Nemanja Nedovic he seem like he can be good PG
Intriguing talent, I’m not so sure about his point guard skills, though. Could seem him having trouble fitting in at a position. Worthy of getting a solid shot at making a roster, though.
If Phil Jackson gets into the NBA again, does it seem like he’s holding out for the Lakers? He turned down Brooklyn and Toronto. He’ll also be Jeannie’s husband soon and it’d be awkward if he joined another team.
I certainly think Phil and the Lakers reuniting is inevitable. As you pointed out, he’s married to Jeanie and he’s turned down every offer I thought would be enticing for him.
Portland needs a center badly and the FA class isnt great after D12. How does Mathews, Freeland and the 10 pick for D.Jordan and the 25 sound? Portland can gets their center, LA gets a solid 2 next to CP3 and can draft a center at 10. Plus the FA class for 2′s is deep and Portland would have cap space and can possibly go after Iggy. Dame, Iggy, Batum, LMA and Jordan is a solid starting line up.
I’m not going after Jordan if I’m the Blazers, although the Olshey connection does make it seem possible. I’d rather get Al Jefferson or go with Len/Zeller.
if the knicks dont re-sign j.r. smith, what are there chances at acquiring a guy like brandon jennings and locking him up for the future. he’s due to make either a little bit under 13mil or a little bit over.
They don’t have the flexibility to make such a big signing.
where do you see dennis schroeder getting draft on draft day which team really needs to draft him?
Utah at 14.
sources say the mavs are likely to trade their lottery pick in the draft, who are some likely trading partners and what would it take for them to ok a deal ?
Someone mentioned Cleveland earlier, I think that’s a strong possibility.
When you’re a team as deep as Denver who doesn’t even have minutes for Mozgov to play, what do you do with your draft pick?
Go international, someone who won’t be ready to come over for a year or two.
Do you see Spurs making a big run for Pekovic or their priority would be to resign Splitter? I am referring Pekovic because Pop likes very much European players. Also will they go after Tony Allen with their remaining cap.Strong defender with winner mentality. Fits Pop also
I could see them looking at Allen. Pekovic is going to be hard for them to go after without renouncing Manu, which I don’t expect them to do considering they’re two wins away from the NBA Finals.
Would the Lakers consider tanking to make it into the lottery next year? Whether Howard re-signs or not, you trade Gasol for ending contracts, Kobe will be out for most of the season, and the 2014 draft looks real good for the Lakers to draft their next star to learn from Nash and Kobe. Start the rebuilding of Rome. The Jerry Buss legacy is over (bless his soul) and now it’s the time of the Buss kids turn to create their own. I’m just scared if the Lakers fans would turn on them.
I don’t see the Lakers ever tanking. That’s never been how they’ve gone about things. Can’t see that changing now. Trust me, the younger Busses share Jerry’s passion for pleasing the fan base and competing for championships. Tanking is for teams who can’t attract big name free agents, which the Lakers certainly can do.
Who leaves their current ball club as franchise player first to look for greener pastures? Love? Wall? Walker? Cousins? Monroe?
I see Love, Cousins and Monroe being pursued the strongest by other teams. Wall too, but I think Washington can keep him.
If you were Donnie Nelson, who would you draft with the 13th pick and what would be realistic targets in free agency for the mavs?
Michael Carter-Williams or Mason Plumlee. Realistic targets? Brandon Jennings/Al Jefferson.
What are the spurs biggest needs heading into next season? Do you see them packaging some of their young assets together with draft picks and trading for youth at the 3-4 position? whats up with you picking the spurs to lose the last 2 rounds?
Really depends on how the season ends. They’ll keep the group together if they win a championship. I think to address their interior play the most. They’re pretty set at the 1, 2, and 3.
Do you think Tim Hardaway Jr. a good fit for the Blazers? Will they target him? What do you think of his game?
I’m a fan and think he fits in on any team that considers the shooting guard spot a weakness. The Blazers make a ton of sense.
Want to know your thoughts about this trade I think it works for both teams Garnett bring us defense and if I’m not mistaken he comes off the books 2014 same as deng so we could go for a max player Crawford brings us some Offense. For Boston you get a good young point guard to run the team while rondo is recovering and boozer gets them that offense they need. Plus a swap of there picks for this years draft. http://espn.go.com/nba/tradeMachine?tradeId=qbwembc
Garnett isn’t waiving his no-trade clause to go to Chicago.
Why didnt any nba team picked g rice jr out of the dleague this season and why cant a guy like pat ewing jr. Cant get a team to play? He got nba body and good defense?
He wasn’t eligible to be signed. He kept his draft eligibility intact, he has a great chance to go in the first round.
will we see changes and athleticism in the next laker roster or few tweaks?
I have no clue what their roster is going to look like, but seeing them get younger and more athletic would make a lot of sense.
Will tyson chandler for bogut be a good trade?
Not for Golden State.
Your thoughts on NBA draft prospect on Giannis Adetokoubo? Who do you could to be the “sleeper” of this year’s draft, if such player exists.
Great talent, super athletic and versatile. Needs to fill out and compete against a higher talent level, though. I expect him to go late in the first round. I have an article coming out about sleepers on Sunday, don’t want to give it away. Stay tuned!
what do you think lakers will draft ? howard staying with lakers or will sign with houston, dallas ,atlanta , cleveland, golden state ?
I think they need to get a small forward in the worst way. Would love to see them get Tony Snell. I have no clue where Howard goes. I’d be more willing to bet on his mind not being made up yet than any other particular team.
How about patrick ewing jr.? Will he ever play for the nba? Can u dare answer where pau gasol will play next season? Thanks
I’m not sure, he got some good looks and but wasn’t able to stick. The window for guys like him to get is pretty slim because there are guys like that who come through every year. He’s better off chasing bigger paydays overseas.
my top two guys in this draft, literally, are dennis schroder and steven adams. Adams is upside….he’s a couple years away but boy he could be a Bogut in time. And DS is a Rondo type…rare speed, freaky length….your thoughts.
I like them both a lot. Two guys who could be some of the best in this class down the line. I don’t see them lasting long after the lottery, if they’re still around after then.
What do u think of a rotation of:
Lillard, Matthews, Batum, Aldridge, Pekovic
Bench: Maynor, Foye, Claver, Landry, Leonard
Also, your pick for tonight ?
Thanks man ! Appreciated !
I like it, much improved roster. Think Barton could crack the rotation too.
how high do the jazz need to move up to get cater-Williams?
His range is 2-13, so it’s hard to say.
what the lakers planning this offseason ? Can they afford to trade Gasol if Howard walk in free agency
I think they have several plans, all contingent on what Howard does. If he walks, I think Pau stays and they try to find a new starting PF.
I’m out guys, thanks for all the questions!
