Did I see correctly that Jason Kidd:
a) emphasised that his Nets team was going to respect the refs and not argue; and then
b) went out and got a tech at the Nets’ first Summer League game?
Welcome everyone to this week’s chat! Sorry about all the time shuffling, schedule is crazy here on the road for summer league. My question queue is pretty full right now, so I’m only going to be able to do quick-hitting answers. Let’s get to it!
Arky, you did see that right. But it’s not like Kidd was called for a tech for crossing the line verbally. He was called for a tech for crossing the halfcourt line, big difference.
If you’re the Knicks GM, how the heck do you get out of Amare’s contract? Would there be any way to send him off to a non-contender along with a 1st round draft pick or two in exchange for mostly expiring contracts? (Examples: to Orlando for Turkoglu, Harrington +; to Phoenix for Frye, Scola, Beasley; to Charlotte for Gordon, Haywood, Sessions) Or would that be wishful thinking on NY’s part?
Wishful thinking. They don’t have picks to give to my understanding after the trade for Bargnani. They’re stuck with him.
I’m super excited that the dubs have a legit starting five, but sad that we couldnt keep jjack and landry… I’m confused why with the salary we saved with the trades w/the jazz that we couldn’t resign at least one of them. why did we have to give up our bird rights for jack? i personally think we should of paid jack to keep our bench strong. will the dubs be signing anymore more free agents soon? who of the remaining free agents would be a good fit? thanks in advance
They still had to renounce them to free up enough space to land Iguodala. The Warriors core is locked in, they’re only going to have exceptions for at least the next couple of seasons.
with the knicks running out of FA options? any chances they can bring in a player like tyler hansbrough, tyrus thomas, samuel dalembert, kenyon martin or lil nate with the money they have left?
Depends if they want to come for the minimum.
North Texas alum here…it seems the Josh Smith signing in DET means T. Mitchell needs a HUGE summer league showing to avoid the d-league, right?
Are you of the opinion that playing time in the d-league is better than riding the bench in the NBA?
I think he was D-League bound anyway. He’s a great athlete and an intriguing prospect, but he’s got a lot of developing to do in terms of his skill set and being able to play at the NBA level.
Yannis, will Rondo get traded this summer and for whom? The Detroit rumor makes sense, esp since they signed Rondo’s buddy Josh Smith. Would Drummond and Stuckey be enough, or would Ainge want at least one first-round pick, too?
Seems like Drummond is staying put. I don’t have the feeling that they’ll let him go, even for Rondo. I think Boston is holding onto Rondo as well. Maybe they revisit after the deadline. If he has a big first half, he could bring much more in return.
With Holiday, Gordon, and Evans on the Pelican roster do you see Austin Rivers getting consistant minutes?
Do you see him improving from last year and becoming a valuable role player? It isn’t really possible to get any worse…right?
He can’t get worse, but he’s not getting time. They also signed Anthony Morrow. Rivers is going to be doing a lot more watching than playing this season.
I know that it’s a longshot that Lebron leaves Miami. If he does, where is his most likely destination? Cleveland, LA, Dallas? What about Carmelo?
I think LA and Cleveland are the only two teams that have a serious chance to get him, but I don’t even see that happening. I think he stays in Miami, re-signs with Cleveland after his next deal to end his career there.
I am confused about what the Nuggets are doing. They lose Masai, fire Karl, and fail to resign Iguodala. They trade for Arthur and sign Hickson. What do you think is the plan for this year? And do you think they will make the playoffs again?
They’re not going to be as good as they were this last year, that’s for sure. I’m not sure what the plan is there to be honest, hope to talk to some people who can shed some light on it for me in Vegas. They’ve taken some steps back, without a doubt.
Yannis, the Lakers need some players who do u see that is willing to sign this year for little money?
They’re pretty set now with Young, Kaman and Farmar coming in. I think they could use another four. Lamar Odom would be ideal. If not him, bring back Josh Powell. They’re all about cap space for 2014.
What do you think about the G.S. trade with Utah? If Utah is going to put there trust in there young players like they should have last year, i think this was a great trade? got them some 3 point shooters, Biedrins who needed a new team for 5 years and a nice haul of 2 unprotected 1st rounders, 3 2nd rounders, plus cash. Plus, Utah retains cap space with the hopes of Labron coming in Utah in 2014 (might be realistic if Utah gets the 2 lotto picks next year. PLEASE G.S. tank again
Smart move by them. I know Utah was probably hoping to make a bigger splash, but they need to trust in Dennis Lindsey. He knows what he’s doing and their young core is as good as any team’s in the league.
How bad will the Jazz be next year? Top 5 pick? Do you think the Jazz will have a few recognitions on this team next year?
Defensive Player 1st team (Favors)
Most Improved (Burks, Kanter, Favors?)
Rookie of the Year (burks)
6th man (Rush or Burks)
Not sure they’ll be in the mix for any awards or bad enough to get in the top five. They’re probably lottery bound, though, that’s safe to say.
Yannis, Do you see a BOLD trade with the Pistons moving Monroe and knight for Rondo and C.Lee?
Na, I don’t think Monroe or Drummond are available – even for Rondo.
should the spurs tank for andrew wiggins since we just blew a chance the title?
No. They were 24 seconds away and have the entire gang coming back. They’re not tanking.
Yannis, Do you think Drummond will be the best Center after this season.. I can see him avg 14pgs, 13rbs, 3blks,and 2 stls a game..
He’s got crazy talent and potential, but I’m not ready to crown him the best center in the league.
i think kawhi can be a potential franchise player, thoughts?
I’d rather see it first. He’s in the perfect role and he’s excelling, but that’s led a lot of people to say he can be a top option. I’m not so sure. Once you become the top option you have a lot more attention focused on taking your strengths away than Leonard currently does.
can the spurs realistically win a title now?
No reason to say they can’t, they were awfully close.
Yannie, if you were Joe D would you trade Drummond, Knight,Singler, and Stuckey for Rose and Deng..
Detroit starting 5.. Rose,KCP,Deng,J.Simth and Monroe.
Not worth discussing, Chicago wouldn’t do it.
KINGS questions: 1)Isn’t Monta a movement stopper? Would he be good for KINGS? 2) What if KINGS could swing a deal of JIMMER to the JAZZ for Brandon RUSH. Who wins the trade? 3) Would a HAYES to MINN for Derrick WILLIAMS be a good move for the KINGS? Thanks.
Yes, No. Doubt Utah does that. Doubt Minnesota does that.
I’m lost…how does Josh Smith fit in with Drummond and Monroe?!?
Starts at the three, slides to the four to spot Monroe/Drummond or deal with the inevitable foul trouble Drummond is likely to face.
Is John Stockton’s record of 15,806 career ast untouchable?
J Kidd played 19 yrs and he barely got over 12k averaging 8.69 apg…
If they maintained their career apg
CP would take 12 yrs (most realistic?)
at the age of 40
Nash would need 7 more seasons
Rondo would need over 17 seasons
Mind = blown
It won’t be easily surpassed that’s for sure.
I’m constantly arguing with my friends about waiting for next year. Big Cavs fan here and I’m tired of hearing how the Cavs are saving cap space for next year. What is up with all this talk about free agency in 2014? Other than the rookie contracts (where a team can still hang on to the player) there’s Lebron James and a bunch of aging players like Tony Parker, D. Wade, and Kobe. Gay is nice but we see he’s not a difference maker by himself. I seriously doubt that James comes back to the Cavs so I say improve your team now with the players available now. I could make an argument that the top free agents in this year’s class will have a bigger impact than the top free agents in next year’s class. Hopefully by the time you do your chat the Cavs will have signed Bynum and he proves to be healthy.
Part one has already happened. We’ll have to wait and see if he’s really healthy. Cleveland clearly wants to win now.
Yannis, I read online that everybody’s “tanking” to get Wiggins, yet I see only three teams doing so–Philly, Utah, and Orlando (I’ll add Boston if Ainge trades Rondo). The other lottery teams seem to be adding pieces for a playoff push next year. Which teams do you see tanking?
People are exaggerating. Those are the only three that are clearly rebuilding through youth right now.
Yannis, a few signings/trades have me scratching my head, perhaps you can explain. Why would the Pelicans dump their C and back-up PG, to overpay for a 6th man? Why would Sac be interested in Ellis (don’t they already have a plethora of shoot-first guards who can’t shoot)? Why does DET add a veteran front court player when they need shooting and time to develop? Why would ATL sign another PF and let theirs go for nothing (Horford can’t be happy)? Very confused by these deals, what are GMs thinking?
It’s all about collecting talent. Can’t win without players. Plus, it’s early in the offseason. Whose to say there aren’t more moves to come?
Under league rules, if the Lakers amnesty Kobe and he sits out next season, could they ‘re-sign him the year after that? Thanks!
They’re already amnestied World Peace, but hypothetically yes if they amnestied him they would have been able to re-sign him in a year.
There were many articles discussing Kobe Bryant being at the Dwight recruitment meetings where he challenged Howard – telling him he needs to learn to be a winner. This strategy makes sense for a personality like Kobe, who has overdrive in ambition – where this challenge would inspire him. But many questioned this decision by Kobe as a somewhat sensitive Howard may be turned off my this challenge. Does this example prove players (even with the prestige of Kobe) should stick to playing basketball. And let the executives do their thing – as Kobe seemed to turned off Howard by doing this. He just didn’t understand the playing of the game during free agency. Do you agree with many analysts that Kobe helped contribute to Howard not resigning? Why or why not.
I think Howard’s decision was already made. Kobe didn’t come off in a way that Howard wasn’t already very well aware of. They spent the last year together. Howard knew exactly what playing with Kobe was like and about. Nothing new came out of that conversation. Kobe played a part, but that conversation was a non-factor.
If you were starting a team from scratch, how many current NBA players would you choose above Dwight Howard. My list would be Lebron James, Chris Paul, then Dwight Howard. What would your list look like?
Give me LeBron, Durant, Paul, Howard, Anthony in that order.
There are many Laker fans trying to save face after Dwight Howard ended up choosing Houston over LA in free agency. The argument being, he was selfish / prima dona and they can bank that cap room for free agency in 2014 where they will be able to land Lebron, etc. I for one am not buying those cupcakes. Not only did they loose the top defensive center in the game, it most likely ensures they will not improve next year, will not be bad enough to get a good draft pick, and there is no guarantee of Lebron in 2014. I believe they will be hard pressed to find a player to replace Howard in 2014, let alone improve. Two questions: Do you buy the argument from many Laker fans?
Laker fans are eternal optimists. They’re going to walk away with some quality players, maybe not LeBron – but they won’t be down for long. Look at their history. They’ve definitely taken a step back, though.
If you were a GM of an NBA team, which shooting guard would you prefer: OJ Mayo at 8 million a year, DeMar DeRozan at 9.5 million a year, Tyreke Evans at 12 million a year or Eric Gordan at 15 million a year.
Give me DeMar DeRozan at 9.5 million a year.
Hey Yannis? What’s going on with Brandon Jennings. Would he be a good fit on the Pistons? What free agents would fit with the Piston? Should they amnesty CV?
Would he be a good fit? Yes, but I don’t think they have to go out and get him because he’d tie up a lot of money over the next 3-4 years. Amnestying CV is only necessary if they feel like it puts them in a better position to improve.
How much better can Terrence Jones become playing next to a dominate center like Dwight Howard? He is athletic, with decent range and seems like a great player to put in the lineup with Howard.
I think he’s a great fit. Definitely a potential breakout player next season.
Yannis my man!!! Been busy? LOL Hey just wondering what you think of the moves that Vivek has made here in Sac? Malone, Petey D’, Granger and now the take over of the Reno Bighorns. Seems like solid moves. Now the roster….I understand that takes time. I am impressed with the people Mr. V surrounds himself with. Your thoughts?
Just a little bit. I think they’re on the right track. I hope they don’t get Ellis, that’s not what that team needs. I’m all for NBA teams getting single-affiliate D-League teams. Every team needs to have one.
Hi Yannis! With Kobe not wanting to take any pay cut after his contract, Do the Lakers have any money left to get a franchise player of say, Lebron’s caliber and good role players to back them up?
Yeah, they can sign two max guys next summer.
i was wondering what kind of ceiling do you put on bennett, do you think theres a possibilty he could become an all star, and do you see any trades in the near future for the cavs??
There’s not enough minutes to go around for the power forwards and centers they have, so something is going to have to give. But, I can understand them hanging onto them first in order to make sure everyone is healthy.
Monroe, Knight, Stuckey, and Villaneuva for Green, Rondo, Lee, and Wallace. Who says no?
hey yannis hows it going wit u?…So the clips picked up Reggie Bullock who, admittedly, i have not seen much of. I hear he can shoot and defended the other teams top wing player so my question is do u think his foot speed can allow him to guard the 2 guards in the nba? Jamal at point with a 3&D shooting guard sounds like a pretty potent 2nd unit considering the 3 position is already 2 solid defenders deep. What do u think? Thanks bud
No. He’s a three.
What do you think of the bulls two draft picks
I’m a fan, they draft well.
Yannis! Hear me on this 1 bro! Cavs send Alonzo Gee & CJ Miles to Nuggets for Wilson Chandler.
Chandler starts at the 3 for Cavs
Miles can compete w/ Foye for starting 2 guard spot & Gee comes off the bench for Gallo
Interesting idea. Not sure That’s enough for Denver, though.
Kirilenko takes 7 million plus less to sign with Prokhorovs nets? What is to prevent an owner like Prokhorov from making a side deal with kirilenko to get him on his team? I just find it very suspicious that a player who turned down 10 mill would agree to so much less on a team without some sort of side incentive.
Serious repercussions from the league, including a blocking of the signing all together. The NBA will investigate. I’m not saying there’s a side deal, but if there was – good luck getting the people in Russia to cooperate with the investigation.
What about trade like this:
Blazers get Asik, Barnes, Bobcats 1st rounder via Bulls and Mirotic
Warriors get Deng, T. Jones, Leonard and 1st rounder from Rockets
Rockets get Lee
Bulls get LMA
After this trade Bulls can amnesty Boozer and S&T Ellis for Teague and future 1st rounder
HOU: Lin, Harden, Parsons, Lee, Howard
POR: Lillard, Matthews, Batum, Barnes, Asik
GSW: Curry, Klay, Igoudala, Deng, Bogut
CHI: Rose, Ellis, Butler, LMA, Noah
I’m ending on this one folks, have to hop on a flight to Vegas.
This wouldn’t happen. Too many moving parts, guys that teams aren’t necessarily willing to let go of.
See you guys next week at a time to be determined!

Danny Granger has the opportunity to really be a difference maker off of the bench for the Indiana Pacers... Kobe Bryant more optimistic going into his second game back from his torn Achilles.
