Heat have no picks but could use one
Returning most of the roster from a third consecutive Finals run, the Miami Heat might seem set. But this draft is loaded with the type of interior defenders they lack, such as Gorgui Dieng, Jeff Withey and Mason Plumlee.
Knicks’ aging roster needs youth injection
Picking 24th overall assures little, but the New York Knicks’ biggest need would be hard to miss: youth. The frontcourt is older, but the backcourt is shorter because of Jason Kidd’s retirement. The Knicks can afford to pick the best player available.
Pacers should target backcourt depth
The Indiana Pacers rely too much on inconsistent guards George Hill and Lance Stephenson, so finding help should be a priority. Tim Hardaway Jr., Allen Crabbe and Reggie Bullock all can knock down open shots, which the Pacers need.
Nets’ tight salary cap will impact decision
The Brooklyn Nets won’t be able to afford much in free agency for the next few years. Expect them to save on luxury tax by stashing away a foreign player or pick a polished player who can help them win now at No. 22.
Backcourt takes center stage for Bulls now
Derrick Rose is coming back, but who will join him at guard for the Chicago Bulls? They have the chance to remake much of Rose’s support, and players such as Kentavious Caldwell-Pope, Tony Snell and Jamaal Franklin fit.
Ferry gets to build Hawks’ roster from scratch
The Atlanta Hawks have three players under guaranteed contracts for next season, meaning general manager Danny Ferry can do whatever he and new coach Mike Budenholzer want with their four draft picks and salary cap space.
With future unclear, Celtics should start inside
Even if the Boston Celtics decide not to go all-in on rebuilding, they need to bring back their toughness. They can target defense (Gorgui Dieng or Jeff Withey), polish (Mason Plumlee or Kelly Olynyk) or potential (Steve Adams or Rudy Gobert).
