NBA Draft Obligations 2013

Draft picks are often used as currency in the NBA.  While they hold no dollar value in matching salaries, many high-dollar players are dealt with draft picks the returning bounty (along with flotsam and jetsam to make the numbers work).  Teams are unable to trade consecutive future firsts, which can become even more complicated a subject when protections are factored in.

Looking backwards, if a team did not have a first-round draft pick in 2012, there is no restriction on trading away their first in 2013.  If, however, a franchise does not have a 2014 first-round pick, they cannot trade away their 2013 first without bringing in an additional pick in either 2013 or 2014.
