For 15 years now, Tim Duncan and the San Antonio Spurs won’t go away.
They’ve battled small-market stature, overcome the loss of a legend and watched their key players get old and injured. And they still are on top.
The Spurs claimed the No. 1 spot in USA TODAY Sports’ NBA power rankings for the first time since late November, passing the Oklahoma City Thunder and Los Angeles Clippers in the process. An eight-game winning streak will do that for you.
Our NBA panel comprises USA TODAY Sports’ Sam Amick, Adi Joseph, Kevin Spain and Jeff Zillgitt and Hoopsworld.com’s Steve Kyler and Lang Greene. And we all agreed (which never happens) the Spurs are on top.
Here’s the top five from Monday’s poll (points on a 30-29-28-27-etc. scale):
The MVP vote featured a flip at the top, too, though this one was in favor of the Thunder. Here’s that top five (points on a 7-5-3-2-1 scale):
Also receiving votes were Houston Rockets guard James Harden (three points), Spurs guard Tony Parker (three) and Los Angeles Lakers guard Kobe Bryant (three).
But nothing changed with the rookie of the year award. Here’s the top three (points on a 5-3-1 scale):
Also receiving votes were Washington Wizards guard Bradley Beal (two points) and Cleveland Cavaliers guard Dion Waiters (one).
How did we do? Let us know in the comments.
