2/13/12 – The story of the week has been the emergence of New York Knicks point guard Jeremy Lin. How does a twice-waived rookie come from nowhere to put up 26.8 points and eight assists on 51.5% shooting, leading the Knicks to a perfect 5-0 in that span? How long can he keep this up and will it work once Carmelo Anthony and Amar’e Stoudemire get healthy? Meanwhile the San Antonio Spurs haven’t lost in seven games. The New Jersey Nets (six), New Orleans Hornets (eight) and Charlotte Bobcats (14) haven’t won in, well, quite a while. The NBA, seven weeks in . . .

NBA Power Rankings Week Seven

Team Rank Last Standing Comments
1
1 21-7 The HEAT did drop a game this week to the Magic but Miami is now the lone team in the East scoring over 100 points a game.
2
2 23-7 The Bulls are surviving despite the precarious health of Derrick Rose (then toe, now back).
3
3 17-8 The Clippers can somewhat replace Chauncey Billups during the regular season but in the playoffs?
4
4 21-6 The Thunder have played seven more on the road than at home and are in first in the West by three games.
5
9 19-9 Forgot about us? – Spurs.
6
5 19-9 The Sixers have split their last six but have been strong all year. The rest of February is a gauntlet (six on the road – the two in Philly are OK City and Dallas).
7
8 18-10 Josh Smith was snubbed . . .
8
7 17-11 The Magic have won five of seven – or five of 11, depending on how you look at it. That kind of embodies the season . . .
9
6 17-10 The Pacers are struggling after an amazing start to the year. Despite Miami on Tuesday, the rest of the month is light on competition.
10
10 16-12 It was an ugly six-game road trip, but it was also a 3-3 road trip.
11
14 17-11 The Mavs are starting to roll again but will be tested this week with Clippers, Nuggets, at Sixers and at Knicks.
12
17 16-12 The Rockets just won three on the road to climb to sixth in the West.
13
11 16-12 The Nuggets lose Danilo Gallinari for a month and Nene isn’t exactly healthy either. That’s a problem.
14
15 15-12 The Celtics muscled out a win on Sunday but it took all they had, at home, over the Bulls who didn’t have Derrick Rose.
15
12 14-12 The Jazz have slowed considerably. Much of that having to do with their 3-7 away record. No other playoff-positioned team has below four road wins.
16
13 15-13 It was about time for LaMarcus to get the nod . . .
17
16 14-14 Now that Marc Gasol is an All-Star and brother Pau is not, is it finally definitive that the Kwame Brown trade wasn’t so one-sided after all?
18
23 13-15 Jeremy Lin? Yes, the paradigm has apparently shifted.
19
21 12-15 Michael Redd on the come-back, 12.2 points per game over the last five.
20
18 13-15 Nikola Pekovic? A number of GM David Kahn’s moves are starting to pan out well.
21
19 12-15 The Bucks have yielded the number eight spot in the East to the Knicks. They may not get it back.
22
22 10-14 Despite their poor start, the Warriors are only three games behind the Jazz.
23
20 10-16 Kyrie Irving sidelined with a concussion – Anderson Varejao with a broken wrist? Ah well . . .
24
24 10-17 Offseason acquisitions J.J. Hickson and Jimmer Fredette are both shooting below 39%.
25
25 9-20 The Raptors had the Lakers on the ropes but just couldn’t get the ball in-bounded.
26
27 8-21 The Pistons won four straight! Well they beat the Bucks, Hornets and Nets twice but yeah, four straight!
27
26 8-21 The Nets are nearing health. Will Brook Lopez and MarShon Brooks help pull this squad out of their funk?
28
28 6-22 The Wizards did take apart an apparently-hot Pistons squad, so there’s that.
29
29 4-23 The Hornets are struggling to keep pace with the Bobcats. They won a game a couple of weeks ago or so.
30
30 3-24 They shoot better from three (29.2%) than the Lakers (28.4%)? Looking for something here folks . . .
