2/6/12 – The Los Angeles Clippers make a big jump but don’t quite top the list with the Denver Nuggets coming into LA for the win. The Blake Griffin dunk alone over Kendrick Perkins catapulted the Clippers above the Oklahoma City Thunder. The HEAT, however, retain the top spot with some of their best play of the season. The Boston Celtics are starting to surge while the Philadelphia 76ers and Indiana Pacers remain strong. Meanwhile the Charlotte Bobcats have lost 11 straight, outpacing the New Orleans Hornets for early odds on the lottery pick. The NBA, six weeks in . . .

NBA Power Rankings Week Six

Team Rank Last Standing Comments
1
2 18-6 The HEAT have the upstart Cavs in Miami before hitting the road for six straight, where they’re a solid 7-4
2
3 20-6 After four-straight on the road this week, the Bulls will have 60.1% of their away schedule behind them.
3
8 14-7 The Clippers have beaten a number of the league’s better teams including the HEAT, Thunder, Lakers, Nuggets, Mavericks, Blazers and Jazz.
4
1 18-5 The Thunder took two difficult losses this week (Clippers and Spurs). They win most games but when the wheels fall off, they fall off hard.
5
7 17-7 Is Lou Williams a leading candidate for Sixth Man of the Year, topping his team in scoring at 15.1 points a game – all off the bench?
6
5 16-7 Paul George is (rapidly) emerging . . .
7
10 15-9 The Dwight Howard uncertainty doesn’t go away but the Magic are starting to put wins together again.
8
4 16-8 Atlanta seems to be losing a little bit of steam, beating the “bad” teams but struggling recently against the playoff competitors.
9
16 16-9 The Spurs don’t play again in San Antonio this month until the Bulls on the 29th.
10
11 14-10 The Lakers get a small boost from rookie Andrew Goudelock. Can they hold it together over the next four road games (Philadelphia, Boston, New York and Toronto)?
11
6 15-9 The Nuggets drop four of five to fall out of the top-10.
12
13 13-9 If the Jazz get through the next six with a winning record, they’re for real . . .
13
15 14-10 The Blazers are killing at home but already have nine losses on the road.
14
9 14-11 The Mavericks survived without Dirk Nowitzki (knee) but are struggling without Jason Kidd (back).
15
18 13-10 The Celtics are on their game again and could end up top-10 by next week.
16
14 12-12 Time for the Grizzlies to lick their wounds with nine of the next 11 at home.
17
12 13-11 The Rockets have stalled a bit as well but are the ninth of nine teams above .500 in the West.
18
17 12-12 Can the Wolves actually compete for a low playoff seed this year?
19
19 10-13 The Bucks beat Miami and then lose to the Pistons?
20
20 9-13 An argument can be made for Anderson Varejao as All-Star, but an even bigger argument for rookie Kyrie Irving.
21
21 9-14 The Suns continue to get steady, solid play from Marcin Gortat with team-highs in points (15.2 a game), boards (10.3) and blocks (1.7).
22
24 8-13 Has the Monta Ellis and Stephen Curry backcourt gotten enough time together yet?
23
25 9-15 Jeremy Lin . . .
24
26 8-15 The Kings have gotten their point differential down below double-digits. Losing by an average of 9.8 points nightly.
25
23 8-17 The Raptors offense has been especially anemic this year, understandable given Andrea Bargnani has only played in 13 games.
26
22 8-17 Losing MarShon Brooks is a blow as the rookie was one of the brightest in his class. The question remaining . . . how long is he out for with the broken toe?
27
28 6-20 The Pistons have won a couple of straight, climbing up from rock bottom.
28
27 4-20 Just a mess, what the Wizards are putting on the floor . . .
29
29 4-20 The Hornets will put Chris Kaman back into the rotation, either opting to keep him or giving a little showcase before the trade deadline.
30
30 3-21 Injuries have made the Bobcats, who didn’t necessarily have much upside at full strength, a disaster.
