The Atlanta Hawks named Danny Ferry general manager and president of basketball operations.
“Over the past nine years Danny Ferry has earned tremendous respect as a front office executive in the NBA,” said Hawks’ co-owner Bruce Levenson. “His philosophy, character, and commitment to creating enduring and successful organizations exemplify exactly what we are looking for in a leader of the Atlanta Hawks. Danny’s systematic and value-driven approach has helped him become one of the preeminent minds in basketball. He is passionate about building an organization the right way, knows how to win and knows how to forge winning teams. We look forward to having him as our leader of basketball operations.”
Ferry was vice president of basketball operations with the Spurs for the past two seasons. He was the GM of the Cavaliers for six seasons (2005-10) prior to joining San Antonio.
The Hawks opted not to renew the contract of Rick Sund but weren’t sure Ferry would be available after he interviewed for open positions elsewhere and was a finalist with the 76ers.
Ferry enjoyed a 13-year NBA career including stints with the Spurs and Cavaliers. He won an NBA championship as a member of the Spurs in 2003.
—LeBron James carried a golden NBA title and not a scepter, but he received a celebration fit for a king as the Miami Heat paraded through a city bursting to honor the league’s champions.
James, Chris Bosh and Dwyane Wade were the key attractions for thousands of fans who erupted when James took the microphone and called Monday one to remember.
“This is the best feeling I ever had in my basketball career,” he said. “I started playing basketball at 9 years old. I have state championships, I have Little League championships, but this is the dream right here.”
–Ohio State’s Jared Sullinger will not attend the NBA Draft this week but plans to watch the event from a restaurant in Columbus.
According to ESPN.com, Sullinger was not invited to Newark, N.J., to be in the green room at the Prudential Center because teams indicated he wasn’t likely to be drafted in the top half of the first round.
NBA executive vice president Stu Jackson reportedly said Sullinger is likely “to go in the teens or in the 20s.”
The two-time All-American has reportedly been eliminated from the draft boards of some teams because of an issue with his back.
–One week into his tenure as Orlando’s general manager, Rob Hennigan cleaned house in the scouting department.
Hennigan fired assistant general manager Dave Twardzik and six scouts, including pro scouts Bob Staak and Al Walker. By the end of business Monday, Twardzik’s desk was taken by Pistons vice president of basketball operations Scott Perry, who was named Hennigan’s assistant GM.
Hennigan plans to move in a new direction, rebuilding the Magic through the draft. Reports circulated Monday that the Magic could move Dwight Howard for multiple draft picks, or a package of draft picks and young veterans.
–Anthony Davis, the likely No. 1 overall pick in the 2012 NBA Draft to be held Thursday, filed a trademark for multiple phrases related to his physical feature getting the most attention — a unibrow.
Davis told CNBC that trademarks were filed for “Fear the Brow,” a popular saying during Kentucky’s national championship run, and “Raise the Brow.”
–The Bulls might be willing to listen to offers for 27-year-old All-Star forward Luol Deng, but he’s been told there’s “no chance” of a deal to the Golden State Warriors.
Multiple reports on Sunday linked the Bulls and Warriors in a deal that suggested Chicago targeted the Warriors with a goal of landing the seventh overall pick in Thursday’s draft. Yahoo Sports reported that Deng has been assured privately that deal won’t happen.
