I am sorry to ask this but I am very conscious regarding the ranking for the upcoming 2013 NBA Draft.
Is there any chance that LA Lakers will grab a spot for 1st round in that draft?? Of course, you know that the Lakers giving their future picks for Howard and Nash, right??
If you know how to answer my question, what specific rank of the Lakers in 2013 NBA Draft? It’s totally confuse me right now.Lakers needs fresh legs.
Welcome in everyone… hope the holiday weekend was good for you… lots of questions already, so lets get after them.
Here is the short of it… If the Lakers don’t make the playoffs they will keep their pick. If they make the playoffs the pick goes to Phoenix first as part pf the Nash deal.
The Lakers have a ton of fresh legs… Jodie Meeks, Darius Morris, Darius Johnson-Odom, Devin EBanks and Robert Sacre to name a few… none of them are gonna see the floor for a team looking for a championship, neither will a rookie.
This is who you have, and unless they trade Pau Gasol for younger parts or picks, this is who you’ll have going forward. The Lakers won’t be in the 2013 draft in a meaningful way.
hi is rob looking to bring back gortat we need him back in orlando
Rob doesn’t talk about things like that. I mean in those terms. The Magic are and will be active participants in the trade market, meaning they’ll be around anything that happens.
I can tell you Gortat isn’t going anywhere anytime soon. The Suns have him locked up for two more seasons, so maybe around the draft or the trade deadline in 2014 he could be had.
The Magic are not “after” Gortat… there was a report, I believe from Poland that listed Orlando as a team with interest… interest and actively trying to acquire or having the assets to acquire are two separate things.
Hi Steve, so how long does LA give the D’Antoni experiment? I realize they are missing Nash and Dwight isn’t 100%, but a team with Pau and Kobe should not be 7-8 at this point in the season. With Miami, you could see the intensity, the potential, and you just wondered if they could put it together; but with LA, they just don’t seem to be a very good basketball team right now. Can they get it right? What needs to happen both on and off the court? Thanks.
How long? as in when will they fire him?… Not gonna happen.
Mike would have to flame out badly, and that’s not happening.
Everyone and their mother warned you about this… you can’t just toss 8 guys together and it work… equally, who the Lakers are today is not who they will be in March. They don’t have Nash, D’Antoni just got here and Dwight Howard isn’t a 100% yet physically and no one knows the offense or the defense.
Mike D’Antoni has had the job for what 17 days? — I think you have to give this time and understand that the Lakers early struggles were not entirely because of Mike Brown.
Are there any scorers that the Pacers could go after? Will Paul George be a project like Batum, where it has taken till 5th season to put it together on offense?
It does not seem the Pacers are actively trying to acquire anyone… as for Paul George, hard to say what he’ll be… but Nic Batum is a fair ceiling, he thinks he can be more than that.
Remember he was a really young guy coming into the league and they have a lot of turmoil going on… they miss Darren Collison badly.
Steve, I’m a little concerned with my Celtics. What do you think of the current mix of players? What trade would make sense for the C’s (and the other team, of course)?
I talked with a lot of them about it… 1st – they have like 8 new guys, that’s a lot to change. The way the Celtics do things is different and guys are struggling to adjust. I think like the Lakers, who the C’s are in march isn’t who they are today.
Doc Rivers still doesn’t know who he can go to and all of the new guys are learning how to play with Rondo… How many times has he dropped a pass on someone and them not be ready.
I watched him direct players to specific spots on the floor and them look lost, so its about getting guys to understand where they need to be on both ends of the floor.
2 Gasol questions sir:
1) I keep hearing fellow Laker fans speculate on Josh Smith and Ryan Anderson but as far I can tell neither team has any reason to trade those younger players for Gasol and his $19 for this and next year. What benefit would either team get in trading those guys for Pau in your opinion? I don’t see any.
2) However I’m curious what the chances would be of Lakers doing a trade, possibly a 3 way, where Gasol could get swapped for Paul Millsap? I know they already have a logjam so that’s why a 3 way would probably be needed.
(p.s. I’m not saying Lakers need to trade Pau, just curious to know if and how a Gasol for Millsap move would work.)
#1 – Laker fans are speculating about the gems they can get for the things they no longer want. Neither players is available in trade and neither team wants anything to do with Gasol, especially not in exchange for the players mentioned.
#2 – Gasol’s deal is toxic for a team looking at cap space… Utah is looking at cap space… the only way a Gasol deal works is if he;s traded for an equally bad contract… Think Arenas for Lewis… The Lakers will never get value back for Gasol, he is not an attractive trade asset. Teams are not tripping over themselves to get Pau Gasol, unless they take back far less talent or longer contract years.
He become far more tradable next trade deadline.
watchin this thunder rocket game the worst thing about houston is no royce white i sympathize with his condition but his on court potential could really be a key to help evryone on this team..thoughts…
There is a reason Royce was there for Houston… there is a reason teams passed on him. You can not separate the player from the person. I hope Royce finds his way, but like Delonte West and Gilbert Arenas, sometimes you can be your own worst enemy especially in sports.
I am not sure it can ever work in Houston and I have had numerous people tell me Royce doesn’t want to play, until that changes, this is the situation and Houston has little choice. They are fining him, so he’s losing 110th of his salary every day he’s out, so its not like he’s at home collecting a Houston paycheck.
What is wrong with the Clippers, Steve? They got off to a fast start and have slowed down since.
Game film… Once you give teams a little film on what you are doing they can start to counter… also look at the teams they trucked early in the season… They get up for big games, but tend to take lesser teams lightly.
They are also not a good rebounding team, so when they face teams that board they lose possessions because they don’t rebound well.
The Clippers are fine… no one is gonna win 70 games anymore, there are too many good teams. The Clippers are at .600 now, that maps out to 50 games and I projected them to be a 50-55 win team… that’s who they are.
Any thoughts on that Brawl last night at the Garden? Do you think Humphries ejection was wrong?
Rondo is a dirty player that takes his frustrations out on others. Whether that’s teammates, other teams’ players, coaches or reporters that ask him questions he doesn’t like.
Hump pulled Rondo into the stands… he hacked Garnett pretty aggressively and was clearly engaged with Rondo. The NBA wants you to walk away, especially when the refs get involved, that dd not happen. Wrong? Not sure trying to establish order in chaos is wrong… Hump was involved in a material way and was hardly an innocent bystander.
Just like you teach your kids… if it breaks off, defend yourself, but walk away… get as far away from it as you can. Thats not what Hump did and he was bounced for it.
Now that Fisher is with the Mavericks, I heard he had two other teams in mind. Who were they?
I have not heard teams mentioned… it was said contenders… so I read that as Miami, Thunder or Lakers. But I had not heard anything specific.
Do the magic commence tank mode after last nights performance? Is there any hope for the season or now do they deal the vets to get rookies
No… The Magic’s view on the subject is how do you build a winning culture and mantra and then not compete. Everyone involved says the same thing… we’ll play hard and try to win every game.
There are no guarantees with the draft and frankly there is no one in this draft that’s worth tanking for. Now I do think the magic have to try and offload some contract money at the trade deadline, but they are getting the young guys minutes and they are trying to win games.
Trust me… I have talked to those guys in the locker room, they all want to win and are pretty pissed when they don’t.
Time for toronto to hit the panic button? What is the trade value of andrea bargnani? We will take anything give us a bag of chips for him
Panic?… no, but there is a reality that this team is not very good. Could they trade Bargs? maybe… but what do they get in return? They won’t get appreciably better unless they take on contract dollars.
Good morning Steve ok here goes if things fall apart for the bulls what trade do you think they could and should make to get back in title contention. I and a couple buddies have discussed this and I was wondering if the pau gasol rumors are true would a gasol for Boozer and rip trade be adequate for the Lakers or if Memphis gets eliminated early would they trade Rudy gay and tony Allen for luol and rip and maybe a pick or maybe just gay for deng and someone else
Not this year in terms of trading… they are without their best player and he won’t be back any time soon… so this is a through away year in terms of contending.
Could I see them dealing Luol, only if they could dump Boozer in the process. Thibs likes Luol Deng, he is the glue guy and their best all-around player.
Celtics will make a trade before or come trade deadline time right?? Because they not getting past the first round as currently constructed..
Maybe… as I said who they are today is not who they will be once they have a couple of months under their belt.
Why don’t orlando play harkless more minutes & how good can he and Nicholson be ?
I wonder why they don’t run more plays his way. He never touches the ball except to pass to someone else.
I asked this question last night and found the answer interesting… the magic don;t run many set plays for players, they create “actions” and based on reactions from the defense players pass to the open guy. Jameer tends to go to Aaron Afflao on his actions, not Mo… when Aaron comes out JJ comes in and they run the same stuff.
In that situation I think its about trust and confidence and Mo has to earn that by making shots and making plays.
Hi Steve, why no love for Deshaun Thomas? Draft Express has him going late in the 2nd round. This lefty can play.
He’s ballin’… Its really early in the process. I remind people all the time that predicting the draft is an inexact science… its about opinions and those are often ill-formed early.
No one had Dion Waiters going 4… or Thomas Robinson sliding out of the top four… or Jared Sullinger or Perry Jones in the 20′s.
Thomas is playing really well, so we’ll see teams view that.
What moves, if any, do you see the Jazz making as the trade deadline approaches? Do they let Milsap and Jefferson play out and walk at the end of the year and use the cap space going forward, or trade Favors or Kanter in a big move for the future? They need an indentity and they need it now.
Where are you Jerry Sloan?
I think a lot depends on where they are as a team… if they are in the hunt for homecourt you hold firm and see what you can do… if you are flirting with the 8th seed maybe you accept it and trade assets.
I think everything is about where are you at the deadline, not what do you have at the deadline…. Also, what are you offered plays a big role too.
Lakers trade Gasol to the Celtics for Jeff Green, Courtney Lee and Fab Melo. (once the trade restriction is lifted for Green and Lee)
Boston fixes the interior problem with pairing up KG with Gasol. LA gets a shooter and a running athletic forward to fit D’Antoni’s system.
Not sure that’s gonna happen… But the C’s will have a log jam at Shooting guard when Avery Bradley returns. Keep in mind both Green and lee are owed a bunch of money and the lakers don;t have the open roster spots to trade one for three, so no your talking about more guys in the deal.
What do you think the Magic could get for Harrington, will he get packaged with someone to get better picks? What do you think the Magic could get for just JJ?
Not sure the magic will trade JJ… I think they want him long term.
As for Harrington, while rehabbing a knee, they won’t get anything unless they take back bad contracts. They need him to play and prove that he can help a team.
Josh smith for Jeff green, sullinger, and Avery Bradley.
Maybe at the deadline if Danny Ferry gets scared, but they have talked a lot and Josh understands what Danny is doing and Danny understands what Josh wants and they are on the same page.
Could change at the trade deadline, especially if someone offers something good, but what your proposing isn’t good for Atlanta.
Why is Lawrence Frank not starting Andre Drummond ahead of Jason Maxiel for the Pistons? Are the Pistons jockeying to ensure their first round pick will not be available to the Bobcats fin the 2013 NBA draft?
No clue… my guess would be because Drummond is being brought along slowly because he has energy and effort problems.
Drummond is the perfect 48-minute stat guys… you look at his 48-minute numbers and you think he’s a beast, but the truth is he gets winded quickly and struggles to be aggressive for extended stretches of games. So you play him in spots and he looks great, but he declines the longer he’s on the floor so you manage that and the expectations that come with starting.
The Nuggets do that with JaVale McGee
How happy is OKC that the Raptors are so bad (draft pick)? Any hope for the Raptors? Are they actively chasing deals?
Not sure its anything they think about… lots of games to be played still.
As for hope? Sure, teams will start looking at trades in about three weeks – December 15th – and there could be some things there, but there is no silver bullet for shooting poorly. I thought Kyle Lowry’s return would right the ship, but its just not happening.
Who could the Celtics trade to get Martin Gortart. Would Kenyon Martin or Eddie Curry be a good FA pick up for the Celtics ?
Not sure Phoenix is looking to trade Marcin, so do you want to put Rondo on the table?… Gotta have a seller before you can be a buyer.
Not sure either guy change the Celtics dramatically… both are bench guys. The Celtics problems are defense and chemistry… adding more guys doesn’t solve that.
What are you feeling about Gordon and the Hornets? I’m thinking it’s not gonna work and they’re gonna have to move him at some point.
I have never thought it would work… was told too many times that he didn’t want to be there.
The problem is because the Hornets matched his offer sheet, Gordon has veto power for the first year. he has to approve any deal, and that’s going to limit what NOLA can get in return. But I agree eventually he’ll be traded, the question is to where and for what.
Steve, the Raptors are looking lost – do you see them moving Bargani and/or Calderon and what sort of return could they expect if they do?
Not sure they are there yet in terms of blowing up the team, but you’d be selling low if you sell now… I think there is inevitability to needing to make a trade.
Chris Paul is still mum on a commitment to the Clippers. Do you see that escalating into the trade deadline and the Clippers asking him for at least a verbal commitment? Or will they just risk re-signing him in the off season without any kind of verbal commitment?
He can’t commit… they can’t ask him to commit. That would be a verbal contract.
Chris has made it clear he is happy and wants to remain where he is, he can’t do anything more than that. The Clippers know he could walk away but they have enough assurances that Chris wants to stay to risk it.
Now if the sky falls on them or Chris gets vocal about the future, then maybe, but Chris likes the situation.
Guys… I am out of time. Thanks for all the questions. Make sure you are following me on Twitter (@stevekylerNBA). See you all next week.
