  1. Sabin C

Hi.Otis should call Raptors for Calderon and get him. He’d be a great fit for Magic.I don’t think that Raptors will ask much in return.Your thoughts ?

    • Steve Kyler

Welcome in everyone. I hope the week has been good to you. Lots of questions in the que, so lets get after it…

Not likely… first, Jose is slated to earn $9,78 million this year and $10.56 million next year… thats going to be hard for the Magic to absorb…

Second Orlando doesn’t have the assets to trade back. Toronto is not going to take Orlando cast offs for a starting point guard.

  2. ricky neal

from ricky who will the chicago bulls get at trade dealine march 15th

    • Steve Kyler

The Bulls are not very active right now… so the short answer is no one… I do think they will look for two guards as Rip Hamilton is still hurt, but don;t expect a huge trade… it looks like they might get Joel Przybilla as a free agent.

  3. Matthi

What do you think about a trade like this:

    Lakers get D12 / Turk / Nelson
    Kings get Bynum / Anderson
Magic get Gasol / Evans / Cousins

    • Steve Kyler

      Not terrible…

Its not likely… but the deal is not terrible… I doubt seriously that the Lakers give up both Bynum and Gasol, especially if they have to take back Turkoglu.

  4. andrea

what do you think about this trade:
    Bargnani&Calderon for Pgasol+ebanks+first lakers pick.
IMHO lakers needs a player like calderon who can move the ball, and Bargnani could become new Gasol in a few year and he is younger and cheaper than Gasol. If than the lakers thakes dwight they become a really good team.
Raptors keep a young SF and a great PF wh can lead the team and teach to ed davis and DDerosan.

Even if I would see very well bargani after KG to boston

    • Steve Kyler

No chance I’d make that deal… not nearly enough value coming back to Toronto… Ebanks does’;t even play for the Lakers, he has sat five of the Lakers last ten games… why would he have value to the Raptors…. equally, whats a Laker first round pick – a pick in the late 20s…

      No deal.

  5. Leslie

Hello Steve. What moves will the Knicks make in the next couple weeks? Thanks

    • Steve Kyler

Not sure they can make moves… they just don’t have tradable pieces.

If the Knicks sold now, they;d be selling everything they have on the low side… This is who the Knicks are for the foreseeable future.

  6. Wilson

Steve, do you see the Sixers making any moves to potentially put them over the top, or is chemistry their biggest asset at this point?

    • Steve Kyler

If they could upgrade significantly, I think they would… but thats not likely.

The Sixers are pretty happy with where they are, and they are really hyper-sensitive to how fans view them. Ownership wants to win now. They are doing that. Unless the floor falls out or someone gets silly with an upgrade of talent offer. Don’t expect the 76ers to do anything major.

  7. Wilson

If he comes back healthy and resumes his previous production for the rest of the year, what kind of market ($) do you see for Spencer Hawes? Are the Sixers priced out?

    • Steve Kyler

Short answer… yes… the 76ers have $63.5 million in cap commits next season…. now that includes an Elton Brand option worth $18.16 million. Now EB could do the Sixers a solid and opt out in favor of a longer term deal to stay in Philly. Not sure he’ll do that, but if he does then there is room for Spencer.

Whats his value… Spencer has a PER of 22.38… thats fourth best among centers or center eligible players… that puts him in the class of and ahead of Al Jefferson (22.01), Marcin Gortat (21.81), Andrew Bynum (21.61), Roy Hibbert (20.96), Tyson Chandler (20.08), and Samuel Dalembert (19.95)

His agent will surely point to that and say he’s worth $8 to $12 million a season… not sure he’ll get that, but considering Kwame Brown got a one year deal worth $7 million – who know how silly teams will get.

  8. Wilson

No offense to Jax, but does anyone really think he is the lynch pin that keeps d12 in ORL? Between Big Baby and Jax, I’m puzzled by the players Dwight supposedly wanted/wants management to target

    • Steve Kyler

Not related… Dwight’s issue is not about roster… its much bigger than that.

You are not the only one who has questioned Dwight’s list of players… sound more like a list of fun guys to hang out with than guys that will win you ball games.

  9. Angie

First of all I love this website.

I’m a fan of Orlando Magic and don’t want to see D12 leave. My husband says its the coach SVG that needs to leave and I agree. He’s a great defense minded coach but throwing up 3′s all the time don’t cut it. I think we have talented players on the roster but we need another coach. What do you think? Because always blowing up the team doesn’t solve the problem. They need to go back and get Rafer Alston from the D-League now. And why don’t Otis Smith talk with D12 because I truly think if they had a better relationship we could get DWill to come to Orlando. But again that will be blowing up the team again. But I think we need a new Coach and GM. How much would it take for them to get Byron Scott?

    • Steve Kyler

      I will answer this with a riddle…

What kind of meal can you make with Chicken?… basically chicken… you’ll never make chicken into steak or lobster.

Stan has to work with what he has… the Magic have been trying to change their identity for years, but it still comes down to what do you have to work with.

Stan is part of the problem, but the other part is that Dwight has decided he can’t win in Orlando. He’s had a lot of people in his ear all summer convincing him that there is more for him in a bigger market and that where ever he goes he’ll have what he has in Orlando or maybe more.

Thanks for the love on the site… we work hard at it.

  10. willie

hi howard for klay thompson david lee stephen curry and let gstate talk howard into staying in the summer and orlando can move on im sick of the dwight drama

    • Steve Kyler

      I’d do it…

      Not sure Golden State would.

  11. willie

jr smith to orlando sign and trade jrich hs to go and orlando has to get quicker more athletic at the 2 guard

    • Steve Kyler

You are assuming Denver would take J Rich… you are also forgetting that J Rich can not be traded until March 1st.

To be honest, I want no part of JR Smith… he is a talented player, but he can be a toxic influence in the locker room.

  12. Robert

Why do some players like Tracy McGrady and Vince Carter lose their skills but players like Kobe Bryant and Ray Allen maintain it?

    • Steve Kyler

      Work ethic.

Tracy and Vince have never been known as hard workers in the off-season… Kobe and Ray are relentless in their conditioning and how they take care of their bodies.

I’d also say that TMac and Vince were raw athletic freaks… not a lot of skill. Kobe and Ray are extremely skilled… Ray more than Kobe.

But at the end of the day its about how hard you work, and neither Tracy or Vince have been hard workers…. Great players, but not hard workers.

  13. Robert

    Thoughts on this trade?

To Orlando: Andrew Bynum, Goran Dragic,Andrew Goudelock, L.A. 2012 1st Rounder, Dallas 2012 1st Rounder

To Lakers: Dwight Howard, Hedo Turkoglu, Luis Scola, Hasheem Thabeet

To Houston: Pau Gasol, Derrick Caracter

    • Steve Kyler

Can we get the Lakers anything else in this deal… should both teams contribute cash towards the Lakers payroll too?

The deal works under the cap surprisingly… I just think it shifts too much talent to the Lakers, but it lines up with what Houston would do… just not sold Orlando gets enough back… A Lakers pick isn’t worth much, especially after the deal and the Dallas pick is in the 20s.

Getting Bynum and two draft picks in the 20s isn’t nearly enough. GLock is a nice player as is Dragic, but neither change your franchise.

  14. Raph

The Magic are clearly falling apart, a Dwight trade prior to the deadline seems imminent. With Lopez maybe back and likely struggling to recover, plus MarShon Brooks out indefinitely, do you think the Nets can still be a good trade partner? Where does Dwight end up past the deadline?

    • Steve Kyler

Not sure New Jersey needs to trade for Dwight… they can wait, save their assets and let Dwight walk to them in July.

Will Orlando blink? Maybe… but not sure New Jersey can make a deal Orlando would do.

  15. Joe

Many new NBA coaches seem to attempt to implement their “system” without maximizing their players strengths and that is why they end up getting sacked fairly quickly. The most obvious recent example is Mark Jackson at Golden State.Yes,try to improve the defense but not if it hamstrings your offence. They may be allowing 6.5 less points a game but are scoring 7.2 less points a game.Unless Mark makes better use of his players on offence he’ll soon be shown the door.agree/disagree?

    • Steve Kyler

Agree… but Mark is not an experienced coach, so he has to learn as he goes.

How many points a guy or team, scores is only relative to how many they allow… if I score 60 a game, but hold you to 58 a game… I win.

The Warriors on the season are scoring 96.2 while allowing 99.2 thats a differential of -3.1… Last year the Warriors scored 103.4 while allowing 105.7 a differential of -2.3… given the injuries to Steph Curry and a shift in philosophy for a young team, thats not terrible.

The Warrior’s biggest problem is they really don;t have a take over the game player… Monta is close, but they need better fitting piece for what Jax is doing to work.

  16. Eric

I like the idea of having veteran bigs surrounding a group of young guards. that said, would a package of cousins, thompson and pick (protected)for kaman be acceptable to both teams, assuming kaman agrees to re-up at sac town?

    • Steve Kyler

I doubt New Orleans takes Cousins… they are about character guys and Cousins is too much of a loose cannon.

Keep in mind Kaman had a trade kicker that bumped up his salary to over $14 million this season… thats a hefty number for the Kings to absorb.

  17. John

Hey Steve, what do you think of Lakers possibly getting Dwight Howard and Deron Williams? What if Lakers get Dwight, do the Nets trade Deron Williams or keep him? Are Lakers potential suitors? A line-up of Dwight, Kobe, and Williams would do some damage in the West, don’t to think?

    • Steve Kyler

I don;t see a scenario in which both Howard and Williams end up in LA… just does not seem like thats going to happen.

  18. Will

Who do you see D12 signing with this summer Brooklyn or Dallas?

  19. jayjay

If the Cavs truly want to compete this year, is there a possibility of a trade sending Philly Jamison and Gibson for Brand and Turner

If not Philly, any ideas on young players that you would be interested in picking up for a team like the Cavs

    • Steve Kyler

I see the Cavs on Friday and should have more next week… but in talking with people close to that situation, they like where they are… young guys are playing well… the team is responding and growing with Coach Scott… not sure they will break that up unless its a real upgrade.

I do not see Philly making that kind of trade, so scratch that one off the wish list.

  20. Trevor

What do you think about a deal of Hedo for SJax? Same money and Hedo would help Jennings in the distribution part, while Jackson adds some toughness and is reunited with JRich? Also is Duhon really that terrible, he looks lke he would have a tough time in the D-League?

    • Steve Kyler

Don’t see Milwaukee or Scott Skiles agreeing to Hedo Turkoglu… if Jax is traded, younger player would have to come back.

This is who CDu is… he’s has some OK games in his career, but this is basically who he has been in the NBA.

  21. Marco Selorio (Sydney, Australia)

What can Ramon Sessions give LA that Gilbert Arenas cant provide? What does Mike Brown need to address in order to move the Lakers back to the top?

    • Steve Kyler

Gilbert can be had for the change in your pocket… Sessions will require you to surrender assets. Sessions has two years left on his deal worth $4.25 this year and $4.55. The Lakers pay tax on those dollars, so is he really worth it?

The days of buying your way out of roster problems is over… you now have to be smart with your money and make sure the deals you give out work in the long term…. thats new territory for the Lakers.

Not sure Mike Brown can fix the problems at point guard and small forward… thats on Jim Buss and Mitch Kupchak

  22. Marc Cuban

What happens if the mavericks strike out in free agency with D12 and DWill? Who do they sign instead? They have to fill the 1,2 and 5 with young talent. At the sign kidd or nash or hinrich 1 year with a team option and wait for the 2013 free agents. at 2 sign gordon or fields. at the 5 who would you choose between mcgee, hibbert and lopez?

    • Steve Kyler

Not sure its “all in” for Dallas… having space means you can trade for players too… so while landing Williams and or Howard is the dream scenario… Its unlikely. Whats more likely is Howard gets traded somewhere else and Williams leaves the Nets after they miss landing in Dallas.

If not Mark goes shopping for younger guys that fit next to Dirk using his space.

  23. davide gorini

hi steve, there is any rumor about next timberwolves SG?
what do you think about courtney lee, iguodala, and george hill? could they join the wolves?

    • Steve Kyler

Lee could be had… Iggy not likely… George Hill no chance.

It takes two teams to make a deal and the Wolves are looking.

  24. Pete

    Steve,

Based on this season so far, who would you vote in as each teams all star reserves?

Here are my picks and let me know what you think:

    West: Russell Westbrook,Kyle Lowry,Marc Gasol,Paul Millsap,Kevin Love,Monta Ellis, LaMarcus Aldridge

East: Chris Bosh,Deron Williams, Roy Hibbert, Brandon Jennings, Joe Johnson, Paul Pierce, Andre Iguodala

    • Steve Kyler

I am not there yet on reserves…. Jermaine O’Neal bet me dinner that Ryan Anderson gets in – I am not buying it. We kicked around the Eastern Conference guys this week… but I haven’t given it enough thought yet to put mine out there… Next week I’ll have more ideas on that.

  25. Kirk from CLT

Are the Bobcats the worst team ever? Is there anything they can do this season to make them at least borderline competitive?

    • Steve Kyler

      Ever?…

Not sure about Ever, but they were not constructed to win anything more than the draft lottery… The Bobcats are trying to amass young cheap talent…. hard to win with that.

  26. Pete

Do you see the Wizards finally breaking away from the cancerous like players (Blatche,Young,Lewis)and build with more character guys?

Also do you see Sacramento doing something to better the 3 spot by trading John Salmons or even moving Tyreke Evans as he has regressed the past two seasons?

    • Steve Kyler

Yes… its becoming clear whats wrong… I expect a fire sale in Washington pretty soon.

Are you surprised Tyreke is regressing… the Kings keep bringing in guards to replace him… The Kings are not overly active on the trade front, but moving John might help but he is a low value player with a hefty contract.

Guys… I am out of time. Thanks for all the questions. Make sure you are following me on Twitter (@stevekylerNBA). I gave a way an iPad2 when I crossed 5000 followers, will do it again when I cross 10,000. So make sure you are following me. See you all next week.
