Met you last year with Coach Vince, enjoy reading your guys stuff. Do you think Al Jefferson is done in Utah? Where he might end up is so.
Welcome in everyone… the NBA season is in the books… The Lakers are in the playoffs and coaches are being replaced, so its officially the off-season. Lots to get to, so lets get after it.
I don’t see Utah spending a ton to bring Al back, so its about price. I think there is a market for Al and I think Houston will be one of the teams at the table. I think you can put Charlotte and Dallas there too.
Its going to come down to money and I think once guys like Dwight Howard come off the board it will be a little clearer. I wouldn’t rule out Philadelphia.
Like you, I refuse to speculate on who the Magic will draft this June. Hennigan and co. will do their research and make a solid and reasonsble choice. My questions are about the current roster.
1. Do they look to trade Glen Davis before next year’s deadline, and if so, what teams could you see being interested in his services and at what price?
2. Do you think Maurice Harkless has it in him to improve his shooting enough to possibly play more SG in the future, what with a crowded front court and the possibility that they get Wiggins or Parker next year? Makes Afflalo another potential trade chip down the line, which is nice to have.
3. Turk and Harrington. What teams could possibly be interested in obtaining them in order to waive them to get under the cap? Is a 2nd round draft pick out of the question to get in return? Or do you see the Magic waiving them themselves? Something tells me Turk could have a lot of value as a $12 million expiring contract if they keep him on the roster until February.
I don’t think you can speculate, because they have made it clear they are not close to anything yet on the draft… so any speculation would fly in the face of what they are saying. equally it would be incorrect information.
I could say “They’ll draft Ben McLemore…” but that is not true and I know its not true today.
As for your questions…
Yes, I think they will shop EVERYONE on the roster at some point, because they won 20 games and have the worst record in the NBA. But Glen was never long term in Orlando – so yes, I think all parties involved would like to see Glen moved. Is there a buyer? that is something else.
Yes, I know Mo well. He’ll be at IMG after summer league working with Dan Barto on his jump shot. Keep in mind Mo is 19… not many 19 year olds shoot the ball well, especially not with Mo’s physical attributes. I’d be surprised if Mo isn’t shooting in the 30-32 percent range from three next year. If he’s not its Dan’s fault.
The Turk/Harrington question isn’t equal… I think Turk is trade-able, especially if Orlando will take back a bad ending contract. The Magic are gonna pay Hedo $6 million and that is going on the cap… can they take back a bad $6 million contract from a team that wants to clear money in July?… Orlando gains nothing cutting Hedo this year, so swapping his $$ even if its not equal for a player they might be able to move at the deadline is possible. That is a very specific criteria but thats what Orlando has to explore.
Al is a different animal because there is money guaranteed this year and next year if he is cut. That is not nearly as attractive in trade, so its a question of a team wanting Al, and I am not sure there is a team that does.
Hi Steve. Re: Kobe’s injury, do you not agree with Simmons’ stand that it’s on the coach to control playing time and to reign in someone as competitive as Kobe, lest he risks running himself into the ground? Your assesment on D’Antoni’s job this year in general, and on the power structure/void(?) in LAL? Thanks!
I don’t ever agree with Bill Simmons as I don’t read or pay attention to him.
That said… The Lakers are fighting for their playoff lives… Mike D’Antoni is on shaky ground to start with and Kobe wants in the game.
Mike is not not nearly secure enough or powerful enough to survive missing the playoffs because he sat Kobe, who wanted to play. Equally. Imagine what happens in the media if Mike pulls Kobe, they lose and Kobe puts Mike on blast saying he wanted in the game and Mike wouldn’t let him.
Imagine the backlash Mike gets if the Lakers fail to make the playoffs and Kobe says he wouldn’t let me play.
Its easy to second guess the coach after an injury… Tom Thibodeau went through it with Derrick Rose.
You ask the guy are you ready, he says yes and you pull him when he says he needs a break or you see his energy level or effectiveness go down.
Mike is trying to win games. Kobe is trying to win games… injuries happen and to put the blame on Mike or to say he could have changed this is simply second guessing.
With the playoffs on the line and so much hanging in the balance in terms of trust and belief, Bill Simmons plays Kobe and so do I.
so what do the magic do with Harrington/Hedo and their Howard TPE? Will they use the TPE to get more picks or anything?
The Magic are going to be aggressive in looking at everything they can do… here are things you can expect… they will be aggressive around the draft. They will try to trade anything they can trade to get the team in-line for the future and the TPE isn’t going to be used for a free agent contract or major money player. They are clearing out their cap, not adding significantly to it.
This team will be young at its core next year and this team will have flexibility in 2014… more so to be like Houston/Cleveland and have the ability to absorb contracts or make trades than to “buy” a free agent.
Keep in mind in two years they have to pay Tobias Harris and Nik Vucevic.
Steve, your pick for W conf finals opponents? Thunder pretty big favorites to make it, then field is wide open, agree?
OKC and Memphis.
Hi Steve. Plenty of candidates for COY as usual, but what are some coaches you feel have done a poor job or at least underachieved? Would Corbin be high on that list?
Byron Scott, Lawrence Frank, Doug Collins, Dwane Casey and Ty Corbin come to mind.
Do the Bucks even deserve to be in the playoffs? They’ve been playing terrible basketball as of late. Thoughts?
Deserve?… they earned it winning four more games than the Pistons and Raptors.
Milwaukee has not been good, but how many eight seeds in the east have been over the last few years? Not many.
Hi Steve, Mitch came out with the dreaded ‘coach guarantee’ yesterday, which usually means the coach will be fired soon; but as you have pointed out what realistic alternative do they have? In regards to D’Antoni who seems to be a one-trick-pony, do you see him making the right adjustments next year to better use Dwight and Gasol? Even last night he had Blake thinking he was Kobe, jacking up 20 shots! He does realize he has two 7-footers who should dominate inside, right?
Here is the problem with the Lakers… they still owe Mike Brown (some $4 million), they still owe Mike D’Antoni (some $4 million)… so if they fire Mike D, they owe coaches $8 million plus who they hire.
I think Mike’s future is about how well they play in the post-season and whether Dwight Howard, Kobe Bryant and Steve Nash believe in the system Mike wants to run.
The roster in place now does not suit the style of play Mike wants to run. Can you change that enough to be better and how do the guys, especially Howard feel about another year.
That is whats going to decide Mike’s fate. I’d also put Jim Buss in that discussion too. Not sure he is thrilled with Mike D’s approach either.
Can anybody beat Denver at home, especially with the altitude being a factor. I could see them making a deep run into the postseason, because they have that advantage.
The altitude is a factor for the first quarter… its also not much of a factor for teams who stay there for extended time, you know like the playoffs. When you get off the plane from another city and its Game 36 of the regular season its a factor, not as much in the post season.
Denver is a very good team, so that is their big advantage and they can come at you with so many different weapons.
Steve, what is your assessment of Cuban’s handling of roster/cap post championship, and do you think he secretly regrets letting Chandler go and dismantling team?
maybe… but here was the problem then and its still true now.
Look at how Jason Kidd has dropped off… how about Jason Terry?
If all of those guys would have signed two year or three year deals, mark would have signed them, but they all wanted long-term deals and that is where Mark got concerned… he didn’t want to pay Luxury tax and be tied to the oldest team in the NBA and have no means to improve.
I also think mark knew that he had a window for Deron Williams – which was very real and a chance at Dwight Howard before he waffled in Orlando.
Had Chandler been willing to do a shorter term deal he’d still be in Dallas. The Mavs did this with Steve Nash too, Don Nelson convinced Mark that Nash would break down in three years so they didn’t give him the big offer Phoenix did… Nelson was wrong and Nash flourished far longer than Don Nelson projected.
We’ll see what Chandler looks like next year and the year after to really know if Mark was wrong on that too. Mark wanted to keep that team together, just not nearly as long as those players wanted.
Which coach is perfect the Sixers now that Coach Collins will be stepping down?
Thats a tough one.
I am calling Stan Van Gundy if I am Philly. I am also looking at the Lionel Hollins situation in Memphis too.
When will the details come out for the playoff version of the Pick’em game?
We’re going to work on that today.
Not sure what we’ll give away.
Looking over the roster, I struggle to understand how the Atlanta Hawks team, as currently constructed, is a 5/6 seed, even in the comparatively-weaker East. Smith is a talented guy, but irritated and kind of a tweener. He’s good not great. Al Horford is a solid quality piece. Teague is developing nicely. Lou is a nice scoring threat, but they haven’t had him all season. Jenkins could develop into a deadeye shooting specialist. But this combination should not end up as a 5 or 6 seed quality team. Am I missing something?
They have two borderline or bona fide All-Stars depending on how you look at it… they also have a lot of guys playing for contracts, that is generally going to yield better play.
They are a pretty cohesive unit and they play well off each other.
There is rumbling in charlotte that the bobcats need to get a new coach. I think that the cats winning the last 3 of the season and 7 of 10 of the last home games shows that even though they were bad the team never stopped fighting which gives me hope for the future. what are your thoughts on dunlap
Mike Dunlap was brought in to teach and to build… Charlotte was not constructed to win. I am not sure they keep him long term, but I am not sure any coach could have gotten more wins out of that bunch.
Morning Steve, My question is. Do you think with Owner Gore of the Pistons will spend a lot of money to bring in guys like Josh Smith to play with Drummond?
Unlikely because fairly soon they are going to have to pay guys like Greg Monroe, Brandon Knight and eventually Drummond.
I think the Pistons will be opportunistic, but I don’t see another Ben Gordon/Charlie Villanueva spending spree coming.
Do L.Frank get fired today by Detroit Pistons? and Do you think Detroit Trade Knight this summer?
Yes on Frank… highly doubtful on Knight.
lakers Making A Run In The playoffs likeThe KingS In The NHL In theThe NHL?
No… but pulling the Spurs is a great matchup for them, simply because they have played the Spurs very well all year.
Good Morning. Who do you see the Hawks looking at in the draft? Most mocks have them drafting the kid Saric from overseas. Heard anything about him?
here are all of our detailed NBA Draft Prospect reports:
Not sure the Hawks care about the draft… they’ll get into that more seriously once their season ends.
Dario Saric is a nice player, but I am not sure he fits the Hawks unless they know Josh Smith is gone, could be better options, especially centers available. Saric is more of a long small forward.
do you think the pistons are better off with oladipo this year and waiting for a superstar wing next draft or would they consider trading knight for a proven point guard instead
No scenario I trade Brandon Knight unless I get a bona fide star in return. They will hire a coach that can use Brandon better this summer.
As for Victor, he’s a nice addition. I like Otto Porter there too.
Do you think Jefferson would be a good fit next to Horford? I would love for D12 to come back home ,but I don’t think it’s gonna happen. Thoughts?
I do and I do not think Dwight Howard is even a remote possibility for Atlanta.
Who should be the next coach of the Hawks? I think they need a different voice and I believe that Nate McMillan would be a good choice. Thoughts?
Again… I am calling Stan Van Gundy first. Nate Mac has not been a very good head coach. I think keeping Larry Drew makes more sense. I wouldn’t be surprised to see Mike Brown there. He has some history with Danny Ferry.
What moves should the raptors do this off season
They need depth and defense. They also have to get some continuity and I am not sure that is happening.
Should the Cavs take a major league flyer on Bynum? It would end the dream of an LBJ return but it would certainly build up their roster for a playoff push next year.
If getting a veteran small forward is a way to go, which of Granger, Deng, T.Young would be available if Cavs gave up picks and absorbed salary
Depends on what Bynum will accept… he may want more guaranteed money than makes sense.
I think continuing to draft smart and aggressively is a better option than trying to “buy a veteran as its going to cost you your young guys in return.
Guys… I am out of time. Thanks for all the questions. Make sure you are following me on Twitter (@stevekylerNBA). See you all next week.
