Pelicans really need a small forward for the rookie year, but a free agent market is dry in that area. Unless we get lucky in the lottery then the draft doesn’t look promising either. Should we stick with Aminu for abother year?
Welcome in everyone… a little early in LA, but its all good. Headed over the Clipper practice shortly but there is time to squeeze in the chat so lets get after it.
There are a couple of scenarios… first they draft at #5, that means a decent player could be there… you can also look at deals involving small forward and Eric Gordon. Then there is the Ryan Anderson factor, he could get moved depending on how the draft goes.
There is a little pressure to compete next year so I don’t think you’ll see the team go all young guys, they need to be in the discussions for the 8th seed or patience in the program is going to waver a little.
Do you think the pelicans starting front court will eventually be Anderson/Davis or will Davis never be big enough to start at 5 and Anderson will be our permanent 6th man.
I think Ryan was obtained to help lessen the pressure on Anthony. I know they like Ryan a lot, but I also know that if dealing Ryan helps them upgrade to the point they can compete for the playoffs, they would look at that.
Sometimes when you are a team like the Pelicans you have to acquire assets, and in NOLA’s case they had money to spend, they had a player they liked and they felt they needed some quality shooting and leadership… Ryan was all of those things – but never lose sight of the fact that he was obtained because he could be obtained and that a long-term marriage is unlikely especially as Davis emerges as a full time starter and Ryan role diminishes.
What do you see the Celtics do to rebuild? Do they wait until the end of KG & Pierce’s tenure to tank and get high draft pick, or do they have any other options?
They are in a tough spot, they won;t get low enough cap wise to really be a free agent player and they don;t have much coming in terms of draft picks. They need guys like Avery Bradley and Courtney Lee to really blossom much as Jeff Green has lately.
I think you’ll see this core back for one more year and then a major overhaul.
Greetings from Australia Steve…
David West and Paul George get most of the cred for the Pacers, but what about George Hill? Few turnovers, decent shot and good D.. i believe underrated, your thoughts?
Not sure you can say a guy that just got $40 million is underrated… the Pacers have him highly rated, but we tend to run a year behind in our praise of guys and with the season PG has had everyone gets crowded out… I think Lance Stephenson deserves a lot of praise as does Gerald Green.
No one outside of the Indiana really pays attention to the Pacers, so they are always going to have guys under the radar, but I agree George Hill has done a great job lately, he’s a next ten point guard.
Is Tim Leiweke the type of power broker who might shock the basketball world, by sitting on Coach K’s front lawn with a “complete autonomy, unlimited resources, you become the highest paid coach/executive in the NBA” offer? Should Raptors fans expect that all doors are now open and to expect bold moves? Thanks.
Yes… he is that kind of power broker, but you are not getting Coach K to leave what he has. If he were 15 years younger and a little less accomplished, maybe, but he has nothing to prove anymore.
Why is Xavier Henry such a bust? I thought he was supposed to be a safe pick once upon a time.
Would never say anyone is a bust… just not fair to the guy.
Xavier has had some injuries that really set him back. He had a terrible situation in Memphis and I think that impacted how hard he worked. He’s been caught in a numbers game in New Orleans because of what they have in Austin Rivers and Eric Gordon.
I think X will play in the NBA for a while, he just won’t be a high level talent like most of us thought he’d be when he came in to the league.
How fast would the Lakers trade Howard for Vucevic straight up?
Not even close.
Howard is a multi-time Defensive Player of the Year and All-Star, he is one of the most dominate big men of his generation.
I think your sipping the Vuc Kool-aid a little much. Go look at Nik’s against numbers… the trend is Nic pulls down a solid double-double, but gives up an even bigger one. Center who play Vucevic tend to have career nights. He has to improve defensively.
Don; get me wrong for a toss in, in the Howard deal he has paid HUGE dividends. But lets not get it twisted, Dwight Howard is one of the best players at his position. Nik has a ways to go on that front.
braniani and ross trade for studamier.
can be a great deal for both sides.
Come on dude, you can do better than this.
Especially when taking into account the new CBA, do you think Lakers fans are on the precipice of having to start dealing with long, drawn out rebuilding years, the likes of which every other fan of every other team has had to deal with off-and-on in the previous decades? Or does the Buss family manage to pull more magic out of their hat?
Here is the problem… not just because of the CBA, but because of how the CBA works… who can LA really get in 2014?
Brandon Jennings could take the Qualifying Offer in Milwaukee and hit unrestricted in 2014… Rudy Gay could opt out and look at LA… but the serious game changers are not going anywhere.
Now I’d argue that with the right coach, Jennings, Gay, Howard and a re-signed Kobe Bryant and Pau Gasol make a formidable lineup. But the turth is there is no future Kobe-type star coming, so its can the Lakers trade into a major guy or buy a draft pick that yeilds an unexpected star.
The Spurs will have this problem too… once Tim Duncan is gone, they are not going to be a storied frnachise. Once Kobe is gone, its going to be tough for the lakers to be the team they have been because they have transitioned from one iconic star to the next pretty seamlessly.
I can tell you the Lakers have told people they are getting major players in 2014, and I think when you look at what they have been able to do with Nash, Howard and Gasol… they tend to get guys they want. Just not sure that anyone they can really get in 2014 makes them world-beaters.
Good morning Steve:
Hi Doug: If Raps bring Phil in, do you see the following changes (let’s say salaries match):
1) T-Ross and J-Val for DMC and filler if needed: Phil has lots of experiences with players such as DMC. Ron Artest, Dennis Rodman. so I’m sure he can Get DMC under leash for his antics plus we will get All-Star Potential.
2) Flip AB7 and Fields into Gasol. Phil is very familiar with his style of play and they won championship together.
3) Phil comes in, B.C and D.C are gone, SVG, or some one similar ( I was gonna say Jerry Sloan but he has no desire to come back in coaching).
AGAIN, ALL DEPENDS IF PHIL ACCEPTS THE JOB.
Your thoughts pls?
Its a little early in LA to process the Algebra equation you have written here.
I think its a clever amount of creative thinking, but I can tell you none of it is going to happen, so whats the comment to make? Its fiction, and a good piece of it at that.
Also… Phil is not coaching if he comes to Toronto, so a lot of your assumptions about reaching guys goes out the window if he’s not with them every day. Also if Phil comes in cross Stan Van Gundy off the list.
What players should the toronto raptors make and what free agents should they sign? Is J.J. Hickson an option
Too early to seriously consider free agency… the draft and trades in and around the draft are the first order of business.
The Raptors are looking at roughly $72 million in salary commitments assuming Lowry, Kleiza and Gray stays in their deals, so they are a tax team as they sit which means no full mid-level and no room to really offer anything. Hickson looking for a payday that Toronto currently can’t offer.
They have to shed some money if free agency is going to be an option that matters.
Hey Steve! Thanks for the chats. Do you see Amare’ coming back anytime soon? He seems to be a very underrated piece to this Knicks team (missing alot of games to injury typically does this). I think Amare’ is the kind of leader who can keep his composure and lead when games start to get chippy, and you’re relying on 2 streaky shooters (Melo and JR). Thoughts?
Do you see Amare’ coming back anytime soon? — Yes he has started practicing with the team and could be part of their second round if they can close out Boston.
Amare is easy offense for them… the Knicks have been way too perimeter oriented and jack-up shots when things go bad. They’d have gotten blown out last night if it were not for Raymond Felton driving to the basket – Amare will give them some post game that will keep the defense honest.
Is Ben McLemore a.safer and better pick than Nerls Noel?
Too much is being made about Noel’s broken growth plate injury… that is not a major injury and was never a factor in high school or at Kentucky and that is not a precursor to other knee issues.
He has a torn ACL… I think that is all that matters. He had Dr. James Andrews do the surgery, and Dr. Andrews will give NBA teams a complete overview of Noel’s knee and what they can expect. Based on that teams will make a decision on what Noel’s career will look like. Saying the kid has knee issues is flat out wrong.
As for McLemore, there are a lot of guys in the NBA that play like Ben. He is a solid NBA prospect and he could be the top overall pick depending on who picks. He is not the next coming of Ray Allen, he is not the next Wade or Chauncey Billups.
He is a little skinny for the NBA, so he’ll have to add weight, but also keep in mind he is 21 now, will be 22 in February. That will make him a little older than his peers in the draft.
So is he safer… sure he hasn’t had an ACL tear, but 6’11 shot blocking bigs are extremely hard to come by… 6’5 shooting guards are much more plentiful.
With how well the Rockets are showing in these playoffs with a young and up and coming team, with a superstar in Harden, Dwight Howard has got to have Houston at the top of his list come this summer?
He does not.
I think you have to prepare yourself that Dwight Howard is not nearly as interested in Houston as Houston is in Howard. You can try and rationalize how good the team is and all of the things Rockets fans say, but the truth is Dwight wants to be a megastar on a team that he plays a dominate role. He wants a major NBA market and he wants all the jewels that come with that.
He has never been a fan of Houston (or Chicago for that matter) – so will the Rockets make a pitch at Dwight? — sure. Do the Rockets have a real chance at grabbing Dwight? not likely.
The smart money says the Lakers are going to bend over backwards and make Dwight happy and he’s going to re-sign in LA. If they don’t, then maybe Houston gets more consideration, but the love affair Rockets fans have with Dwight is not mutual on Dwight’s side.
Are there any moves besides a draft pick out their for the Cavs to take the next step?
The Cavs are waiting for their James Harden trade… they have a ton of assets and will keep adding, but ultimately they have cap room and flexibility to make a big trade once the right move presents itself.
Keep in mind Kyrie Irving is the superstar, so its not like they need much more… if Andy V had stayed healthy who knows where they’d have ended up.
does enough of the blame for this lakers season rest on mike d’antoni to be fired? i used to think he was a decent coach, but after last season i’m not so sure. which coach would a good fit in LA if they do let him go?
The blame on the season is impatience and injury… Mike played a role in that… so did the Buss family for trying to force one more championship in for Dr. Buss. It falls on Dwight Howard’s health… Pau Gasol’s feet… Kobe’s Achilles… Nash getting old and not realizing how much the Phoenix training staff did to keep him going.
Is Mike going to be fired? I think they have to change coaches to keep Dwight. But I also know he refuses to be the guy that asks for that. So when Dwight turns and walks it might be because they didn’t fire Mike D. I know there was a lot of finger pointing internally about Kobe’s injury… I know no one was happy with the way things played out in the media.
So short answer is I think Mike gets tossed on the sword, but I don’t blame everything on Mike, because it was the prefect convergence of bad situations.
Where do you see Gasol going if they decide to trade him?
I am not sold they trade him. I am of the belief that you ride these contract out and clear out the cap and build new.
The Lakers will never get the player they have in Gasol in return in trade… so they downgrade in talent. if they hold on to both Pau and Kobe they can re-sign them to cheaper deals in 2014… they can add free agents or trade for players using their capspace.
You can cross LeBron off the wish list, thats not happening… But Brandon Jennings and Rudy Gay may be obtainable. How different would the Lakers look with Jennings, Gay, Bryant, Howard and Gasol… with Nash playing the Chauncey Billups role if he can get healthy again.
That is not the Miami HEAT, but that is not terrible either. If they trade Gasol that might be hard to pull off. The Lakers want no money on the books beyond 2014 if they can avoid it, not sure anyone gives you a ton of ending contracts for Gasol, who is an ending contract.
Is there any reason to hire mike brown back in Cleveland or is Gilbert just a black eye to a cursed organization.! Q2 can mello beat this Boston team
Mike brown is a solid defensive minded coach… that is what Cleveland wanted.
Melo can’t beat Boston alone… he needs other to contribute and yes I think the Knicks can win this series, but they have to stop jacking up threes.
The HW mock draft has my Blazers taking Alex Len at the 10 spot. Is that because he is the best player available, an upgrade over last year’s 11 pick, Meyers Leonard, or ??
Niel Olshey talks constantly about needing a defensive minded center, so if that is all that is there that is Alex len.
Do you see the Cavs a player for any impactful additions this off-season in Free Agency or Trades? Likely targets?
Not working on that yet… working on the draft.
Your personal opinion on the Pelicans rebrand? I feel a lot more people got on board with it when they saw the logo and colors looked NBA caliber.
For what it is, they did a good job with the logo and branding.
I would ask you this… how cool is the Clippers logo? The Lakers? Wizards? Magic?… The players make the team. Teams that win are celebrated. So its now on NOLA to make the Pelican name mean something on the court.
I am interested to see how they use that in game… the Hornets were one of the best in the league at using their identity in games… from the Honey bee dancers, to Hugo the Hornets… to chanting Bee-Fense. They really did a great job, curious to see how that works in the new re-fitted arena.
Hello Steve. I would like to know your opinion on Harrison Barnes. Throughout the season everybody saw he was very good, just didn’t have huge numbers, because he was playing for a winning team, with big responsibilities. He even proved to be better defender than expected. But now he really has exploded in the playoffs… Did you expect this from him, so soon?
Moving him to the four was amazing… Harrison’s biggest issue is he is not an aggressive player… when you think of Kevin Garnett you think mean and nasty… Kobe Bryant would step on you to get to the basket… Harrison is too nice.
I think his ability gets lost in his niceness… but boy has he been amazing since David Lee went down.
Guys… I am out of time. Off to Clippers practice. Thanks for all the questions. Make sure you are following me on Twitter (@stevekylerNBA). See you all next week.
