Do you think Magic should draft either nerlens or ben at 2 or trade down for burke or any other point guard?
Welcome in everyone. Sorry for the gap in chats. I have been on the road for most of May checking in with really tall guys looking to be millionaires. Lots of questions in the queue, so lets get after them.
I have said a dozen or so times that Orlando is in asset collection mode. They don’t have anything that is a game changer yet. They have a lot of nice pieces, but they don’t have the cornerstone guys. Noel would be another chip and a pretty promising one at that. The Magic are going to have to pay Nic Vucevic pretty soon and frankly he may need a huge check before it makes a lot of sense for Orlando to give it to him.
That said, at #2 Noel should be gone… I think Cleveland grabs him and trades him to the team that grabs Otto Porter for them at #3 or #4. If by chance Noel is there, that is a tough call… Orlando could do the same with Noel, draft him to trade him down the line.
I have tweeted about this all morning… Trey Burke is a nice player… that said there isn’t a lot of logic behind the hype. People love him because he plays hard and he’s a known name on a team that was solid this year — in the NBA he is a touch slow, isn’t a great a shooter and is small. I had a team at the Combine compare him to DJ Augustin, I had another say he wouldn’t start over Darren Collison.
Some one is going to draft Burke, because of what they “feel” about him, but I don’t think Orlando is that team, although they have the situation in which they can take a chance if they want to. I just don’t think that is where they are going to go.
Hi Steve, just want to ask,if Dhoward stays in LA,is Pau get traded?if traded,a KLove for Pau a possibility?a read in an article the possibility of a pAU FOR Shved,Pekovic + 1st round draft pick?
If… Can’t do the If thing in a chat…
Kevin Love is not available in trade, so you can remove that from your thought process. Flip Saunders and Kevin are on the same page and Kevin is under contract for two more years before he can opt out.
As for any rumors about what the Wolves will do… Flip is still assembling a staff, so I doubt seriously that there is anything going on on the trade front that Flip is entertaining. I am certain some people are trying to get him to talk, but I don’t think trades are at the top of his list.
Im stunned at the same retreads being brought up for coaching jobs. Im stunned mike brown was hired. There are several elite foreign coaches, not to mention college coaches, not to mention very very very good assistants, some of whome are in play. BUT….why by scott, larry drew, mike brown, etc….the same guys….i even heard avery bradley’s name twice. Your thoughts.
Not sure why you are stunned… how did Mike Dunlap work out?.
Coaching an NBA team is not always about ability. Its about trust. Do the guys in the locker room trust the guy giving them instruction. NBA guys respect winners. They respect former players. They respect guys that have won at this level.
Unproven college guy, international guy, emerging assistants all battle the same problem — their roster has usually won more than they have.
I can’t tell you how many times I have heard a player openly ask “Whats this guy won?”.
Teams tend to go with guys that have a track record, that know how to run a team and know how to win in the NBA.
Steve, what do you think the Celtics will end up doing in regards to veterans Paul Pierce and Kevin Garnett? Has “The Truth” played his final game in green? Also it there any chance Cleveland trade out of the number one position in the NBA Draft, and is so what would they look for in return?
I wish I could tell you I had a feel for what Danny is going to do… I think a lot of it has to do with Kevin Garnett. If KG comes back, I think Pierce is back… if KG hangs them up I think Pierce is traded/bought out.
Eastern Conference Final Game Two: Another tight game down to the wire or is Indiana about to get a hiding like Game 2 of Miami v Bulls?
Western Conference Game Three: Memphis wins at home or Spurs go three up?
I think Indiana has a punchers chance, but Miami gets better the more game film they have on you, so Indy has to do more than they did last night.
Memphis has been great at home… they need to get the low post game going and realize they can’t leave guys on the screen… Spurs just keep picking guys open and that is on the Grizz to fight through screens and stay with their guys.
On Draft night, wich player is the best fit for the Pelicans?
Tell me who goes 1 through 5 and then I can give you some names.
This draft will be MASSIVELY unpredictable because there are huge question marks at the top and virtually every player ranked 10 to 40 is interchangeable.
how do you feel about Dennis Schroeder and how his game stacks up against the other point guards? how high will he go in the draft? the knicks need to upgrade the point guard position to get more penetration, scoring, assist and defense how bad could they use a guy like dennis and can you see them trading up in the draft to go after him?
Great defender. Solid ball handler. Decent basketball IQ and has played against men internationally. He is arguably the third best guard in the class for what that’s worth.
He won;t be there for the Knicks at 24… so unless they trade up they are more likely looking at Shane Larkin at 24. A little smaller than most, but he leaps out of the building, plays super tough. Is cat quick and can shoot it a little. he has New York Knicks written all over him.
how likely is it that the knicks trade tyson chandler because of his age and his injuries?
How likely does any team in the league take his remaining two years and $28.6 million?
He is owed a ton… this is why Mark Cuban did not keep him. Tyson wanted the longest term deal he could get, and Mark didn’t want to be holding the back half of Tyson’s career.
Nobody every talks about the fact that Mark offered Tyson a two year near MAX deal to stay in Dallas…. he just didn’t want to own the down years of Chandler and the Knicks were willing to risk it, now they are stuck with him and Stoudemire.
how much money will brandon jennings command if he doesnt re-sign with the bucks?
He is not re-signing with the Bucks.
They’ll give him a qualifying offer to restrict him and then they will either match or not match what Jennings fetches in free agency. I think Milwaukee matches anything under $13 million per year… I think anything over $13 million per is going to make them seriously consider passing.
So who goes north $13 million for Jennings is the question? Not sure we know who that is. I think Dallas will consider it and I wouldn’t rule New Orleans out of the mix either, especially if they can get Milwaukee to do a sign and trade.
Which scenario is better and/or even possible?
1). Magic draft Mclemore at #2. Then trade for the Dallas pick and draft either Burke or Carter-Williams. I doubt Burke will be there but I really think Carter-Williams will be. Not many teams need a PG in the top of the draft. I think Dallas might be willing to give up that pick fairly easy. We could take back one of their expiring contracts with our TPE. Since Dallas wants cap space now and we want it next year this could work. Hell, we could even flip that expiring at the trade deadline.
2). Trade the #2 for the #5-#8 or something like that and draft Burke/Oladipo and get some assets back in that package.
I really like the first scenario and feel we could make that happen. that would give us a line up of…
And still leave us in contention for a top 5 pick next season.
I really haven’t read this entire question… Not sure why you guys get caught up in these algebra equations that are not based on anything.
Do you really think teams are just going to roll over and give Orlando whatever they want?
The magic are going to look at everything they can possibly do… so could trading the #2 for a series of picks be possible… sure is.
Could drafting McLemore at #2 be possible… sure could be.
I think you are focuses your attention at the top of the draft, when really its the bottom of the draft and the second round where Orlando has the assets to make some moves.
Ten teams control 36 picks… that means there will be TONS of late first and second round picks to be had, especially in exchange for things Orlando may or may not want any more.
who’s more likely to trade their draft pick the cavs at #1 or the mavs at 13?
Cavs… I think they draft Noel and trade him to the team that drafts Otto Porter for them.
I think Dallas likes where they are and can get the player they covet.
The surprise of the lottery is obviously Washington getting pick #3, how do they go about using it and what do they look to add to Wall and Beal?
They need a big that can play and there are several of them… would not be surprised at all if they went Anthony Bennett, boy he’d look good in that situation.
I would like to know what is your opinion on a possible Pekovic – Varejao trade (sign & trade). Minnesota can’t afford to keep Nikola but they would really use a C who is a veteran in this league and a hustle guy with a reasonable contract (2 years – 18 mil per). On the other hand Cleveland was shopping Andy last year and they need a younger yet mature and more polished big man, who can mesh well and develop with their young star backcourt, but also help them for the playoff push right away, exactly what Pek would provide(for let’s say: 4 years – 50 mil). Maybe they can toss CJ Miles and/or the 19th pick or future draft pick to sweeten up the deal and make salaries work.
Also, what’s your take on using the 1st pic on Noel and then trade for Porter, no matter who drafts him, and maybe snag a bench piece from that deal ? How would you use the 1st pick ?
Thanks & greetings from Macedonia !
I appreciate the question, going to be in your hemisphere in a few weeks for adidias Eurocamp.
I don’t think Andy V is tradeable… do some research on blood thinners and athletics and tell me that is a good risk for your team. Equally, the Cavs love Andy V. I was told the Cavs gave Andy the option to be traded, and he said he wanted to stay in Cleveland, so I doubt they turn around and trade him, not until they know they have a viable replacement.
The Cavs have options galore after landing the top pick. They still have tons of salary cap flexibility and lots of picks to play with. I think they could pull off any number of things just given how much they have to work with.
1. Are u hearing anything about Eric Gordon and possibly been traded this summer?
2.Starting PG for the Pelicans next season? Dont think they will draft Trey Burke, I think the will take a run at Brandon Jennings though I would rather Tyreke Evans.
Nothing credible. EG’s knees and ankles are a problem. I just don’t see anyone taking Eric for anything of value. NOLA would have to take back luggage in a deal.
I agree they will look at Jennings. I think Burke could be there and could be an option for a team looking to build excitement. As for Evans. You are going to have to overpay to get him and I am not sure he makes the Pelicans better.
Who will be the better pro Mclemore or Oladipo
Depends on situation… I think they both have a high ceiling. Shooting is a skill at the next level. If you can flat out shoot it, you’ll have a long career. Oladipo is the better athlete and defender for sure.
hi steve.is there any chance the lakers will try to get into the 1st round of the draft?what position are they going to go after at the draft?
Unlikely. There is a guaranteed salary that is 100% taxable for the Lakers. Any pick they can get isn’t likely going to be a game changer. They did not take the combine process seriously and they have scheduled workouts with guys in their 2nd round pick range, so if they are trying to move up they are not acting like it in the market place.
As for what they are looking for… someone who can contribute. They have looked at guys that can play today, not project guys.
Having talked to an agent involved in the process… The Lakers are saying they may have as many as six open roster spots, so they are trying to get real veteran players or guys with serious experience to play summer league for them with the idea of making the team.
Who do you think will be atleast a borderline nba star in this year’s draft
Again situational… I think McLemore, Bennett and Noel have the kind of skills that could lead to an All-Star berth, but there are no absolute locks in this draft. For everyone its all about where you land.
Tobias Harris can’t get on the floor in Milwaukee, two weeks later he’s hanging high 20′s every night in Orlando. Its situational.
Not really sure I want this, but what are the chances the Clippers acquire Garnett and Pierce? I feel like they’ll get Garnett in trade and then Pierce with the MLE after either the Celtics or a team that trades for him buys him out.
I think KG is either back in Boston or retires. If KG retires Pierce gets traded or bought out and I absolutely think he’s in LA if that happens.
Who do you see the Knicks taking at 24? What do they need the most?
Guard… I’d watch for Shane Larkin, Dennis Schroeder and Myck Kabongo.
Not what they need most, but what they seem to want the most. Younger more dynamic guards.
Steve, any chatter about Orlando/Charlotte swapping 2 and 4 or Orlando/Phoenix swapping 2 and 5? I have both Burke and Oladipo above B-Mac in my big board, but McLemore makes more sense for both the Cats (with MKG) and the Suns (allegedly seeking an athletic shooter). Any scenarios you could envision where the Suns or the Cats jump to #2?
None. Not saying they are not talking, because as I said earlier, Orlando will look at everything, but its really early to be talking pick swaps, because more teams haven’t even worked out guys yet.
Can GMs negotiate trades based on allowing another team to hire their coach or one of their assistant coaches? Don’t teams have to give permission for assistant coaches under contract to interview for head coaching vacancies around the league? It appears the Houston Rockets are in danger of losing their entire assistant coaching staff. Every assistant (Kelvin Sampson, J.B. Bickerstaff, and now Chris Finch) is interviewing for head coaching jobs. Philly hired Sam Hinkie away from the Rockets to run their front office and now they are looking at trying to hire Finch as head coach. Finch was hired last year by the Rockets as a head coach in waiting, similar to Budenholzer in San Antonio. Can Morey ask Philly to negotiate a player trade if they really want Finch or are assistant coaches free to interview and take head coaching jobs even though they are under contract?
Can GMs negotiate trades based on allowing another team to hire their coach or one of their assistant coaches?
— No, but they can ask for compensation especially if a team tampers. The Magic had to give Miami a second round pick for Stan Van Gundy, and he’d been fired.
Don’t teams have to give permission for assistant coaches under contract to interview for head coaching vacancies around the league?
— Yes, however it is rare that teams stand in the way of guys moving up. There have been cases of guys moving laterally being blocked.
Can Morey ask Philly to negotiate a player trade if they really want Finch or are assistant coaches free to interview and take head coaching jobs even though they are under contract?
Do you think Chicago takes Tim Hardaway Jr if he’s there at 20 and find a backup center via free agency. Also do you think they will use the trade exception the got in the Kyle Kover deal.
I doubt they add salary, especially salary beyond this season. Chicago is primed to have tons of room in 2014, won’t mess with that.
As for Hardaway, having spent two days in the gym with him before the combine… he sure fits how they play and what they need and more importantly he can play tomorrow. he’s not a project guy that will need time, he’s a proven guy.
Who do you think the Clippers choose to be their coach and who do you think they should choose to be their coach, and why on both?
They have a few guys they seem to really like… I think Lionel Hollins would be their first choice but he’s going to command a paycheck and I am not sure he’s done enough to get that from the Clips. They also seem to be high on Byron Scott.
Hi Steve. The Wolves need a SG in the worst way (and have needed one for years).
Do you think they’ll stay at #9 and draft KCP, try to move up for Oladipo, or draft for a different position and trade for/sign a vet?
I like Caldwell-Pope, but boy is he underwhelming when you sit with him. He looks the part for sure and he can flat out shoot it, but if you interview KCP, Jamaal Franklin and Hardaway Jr — KCP is going to be third… if you are judging just based on ability to score… KCP might jump to #1, but Franklin just has so many tools and is such a savvy basketball guy. We didn’t even talk about Allen Crabbe, who might be the most efficient scorer in the draft.
I think for Minney it has to be who plays best with Ricky and Kevin and I am not sure that is KCP…. Oladipo would absolutely fit, but I think he’s gone before #9.
Think New Orleans would swap pick #6 for someone like Moe Harkless, provided Burke was on the table?
Again… I am absolutely certain Orlando is going to explore everything that is possible.
I don’t think moving Harkless is anywhere near the top of their wish list, but if moving Harkless gained them more assets and allowed them to move off things they don’t want, I know they’d look at it and it has ZERO to do with Harkless and everything to do with the big picture of rebuilding a sustainable winner.
You can not be in love when you win 20 games.
True of False – Clips and Wolves should swap Griffin and Love. Love is more suited to play pick and roll with Paul, while Griffin is more suited to go up and down the court with Rubio.
False… Wolves have built too much around Kevin Love, wouldn’t get nearly the same with Griffin. Sadly Blake’s game has not changed much since being drafted, really regressing in some areas.
since I read Hardin’s ‘recruiting’, if it were up to him, and assuming he has 17-18 mil to spend, what would you guess his preference to be? Howard and roll player, Jefferson or JSmith or West and more substantial piece such as Jack? In other words, with whom would you guess he’d prefer to play?Available only-no Lebron. So Hardin’s the GM w/ magic wan and you’re a mind reader. Thanks
James is a smart guy… like any eligible bachelor will tell you, don’t fall in love on the first date… James is talking to a lot of people.
Here is the question I wish James would answer — who is calling who? Is he calling a certain 6’10 center or did a certain 6’10 center call him?
There are a lot of players that are interested in what Houston could offer, but more important to that is that interested players are trying to understand how that team works. Whats the lifestyle like? How is the coaching staff? What doesn’t work? Whats the chemistry like?
I think if James was ever open about how these things go, you’ll find that he’s answering more questions than asking them.
Also keep in mind its not like he’s sending them gift baskets pleading them to come to Houston. James is a popular guy around the league and he likes to talk to his friends.
So I am not sure “recruiting” is the right word as much as helping answer some questions and talking to guys about his team.
Would Demarcus Cousins be a good fit for Cleveland?
Sure… I don’t think for a second that Sacramento would trade him, but who really knows what Sacramento will do or who will be calling the shots. Until we have a sense of what new ownership in Sacramento is building and who is running the show, its hard to say what they’ll do.
Guys… I am out of time. Thanks for all the questions. Make sure you are following me on Twitter (@stevekylerNBA). See you all next week.
