HOOPSWORLD Publisher Steve Kyler will hold his weekly chat at 10:30am EST on Thursdays. Drop in your questions regarding NBA trades, the NBA Draft, roster moves or questions about your team.
Hi Steve. @LosAngelesCLippers future is bright with a new coach on the way and with young trade assets in Bled and Dj+Butlers expiring contract. What is the biggest upgrade this team needs, Do you agree we need a Hibbert/Gasol/kaman type of center to open up the post for Griffin? Do you think Clipps can trade for DMC or Granger+Mahinmi? Would Dang work? I think this team needs a Tall Shooting Guard and Tall Small Forward what do you think about Derozen or Gallo? what free agents should the Clipps go after do you think Bynum is a possibility? #CIipperNationRepresents
Welcome in everyone… hope the week has been good to you. Lots to get to so lets get after it.
There is no scenario in which I count on Andrew Bynum, so no… the Clips won’t have the money and it would be a terrible decision.
As for the center question… I think you are writing off DeAndre Jordan too easily… a new coach is going to do wonders for DJ’s game.
The Clips have all the talent they need… they were simply not unified and Vinny played a big part in that.
What will the Cavs do with their #1 overall pick: Select Noel or trade it?
Noel solves so many future problems… the risk is that he may not play and ownership wants to be in the post-season or things get tough when it comes to keeping some of the guys happy.
Otto Porter is the best options, so its not going to surprise me to see them draft Noel and trade him to the team that drafts Porter.
Has Atlanta now become a free agent destination for free agents with the addition of Coach Mike Budenholzer? Maybe they get Chris Paul or Dwight Howard?
Its a step in the right direction, but hiring an assistant coach isn’t like landing Phil Jackson where players would line up to play for him. Its a solid hire and a smart hire, but Atlanta’s problem is no one cares about basketball there. Its a tough sell because you can’t get anyone to care about the team.
What’s the latest on the Kings GM and Head Coach search?
Also, shouldn’t the Kings now be focusing on building a playoff team, now that the Kings are staying in Sacramento?
Looks like Warriors’ assistant Mike Malone will be the next head coach… GM/President still in process.
The Kings have always been focused on being a playoff team, they just were not successful at it for a number of reasons. They have a lot of good pieces, so it will be interesting to see what new ownership does in terms of cashing a few of them out for veterans that want to win.
Sacramento’s biggest problems is they developed a me-first culture, because of how they did things. That is not easy to change without massive roster upheaval.
What would be an easier matchup for the San Antonio Spurs: Miami Heat or Indiana Pacers?
six of one, half a dozen of the other.
Miami is the tougher out for sure… Indiana could be more beatable simply because they don’t have that one game changing guy. The Spurs did a nice job on Memphis, I think the rest and the game film will allow them to get an advantage on either team.
Could you maybe fill me in on Coach Steve Clifford, the new Bobcats coach? What kind of system will he bring to Charlotte?
Clifford is a solid x’s and o’s coach. He is structured and he’s a worker. As for system, not sure you can say he has a system… you can expect a lot more emphasis on defense. Thats a decent hire, not sure its leaps and bounds better, but its a solid veteran hire.
Does Paul Pierce come back to the Celtics or will the team not pick up his salary for next year?
Ask Kevin Garnett… If KG is back, I think Pierce is back. If KG calls it a career, then Boston buys out Pierce or trades him to a team that buys him out.
How do you think the referees have been officiating these playoffs, after some questionable calls Tuesday night?
I don’t do that. Game are called how they are called. I know too much about the officiating process to buy into the conspiracy theories.
Dr. Travis Heath wrote an amazing piece on the transference fans have on officials (http://www.hoopsworld.com/the-great-nba-referee-conspiracy)
I think we have tools available to us that Refs don’t have… they are not permitted to run over and review everything they might want to review and at the end of the day they have to call what they see on the floor.
In my job I get the benefit of being on the floor and experience the speed of the action, the deliberate deceptions and all of the chaos that takes place on a play and how it makes officiating one of the toughest jobs in the world.
Refs are instructed to watch certain actions on plays and things are going to get missed. Equally, things are going to get called you don’t agree with.
Here is my challenge to anyone that questions NBA officiating… go to a busy intersection… run back and fourth eight times and tell me how many license plates you can recall? Colors of cars. Your brain is not wired to recall information that way. Its amazing officials get it right as much as they do and statistically they get it right far more accurately than inaccurately.
Why does everybody keep saying the Spurs will beat the Heat? The Heat won the title last year, they have the experience and are capable of beating almost anybody. What’s your take?
Because the HEAT have struggled to be a convincing winner in the post-season and the Spurs have.
I think game 7 is played in Miami and that gives Miami the best shot at winning it.
Do you think the Mavs would be interested in trading their 1st round pick and vince carter to the Magic for cash consideration and possibly a throw in type player?
Sure… not sold the Magic have any interest in such a deal.
Can free agents be traded for each other? If so would a j.jack for mayo work for you. Thats if cp3 stays in l.a.
In sign and trade deals yes… both players would have to agree to terms and the trading teams would have to be under the Luxury tax when the trades where finished.
It seems most reports are comparing 2013 draft of bench players to 2014 draft of potential stars already. Any chance the Cavs can catch a desperate owner/GM who is willing to take this years 1 & 19 & Cav player to be named and send the 2014 potential top 7 & their player to be named? I find it hard to believe that LA or Love are available. Maybe a 2nd tier center or SF.
Maybe, but that’s not what I am hearing… The Cavs know they won’t get any real value for the #1 this year so they are going to add to the roster… no one is desperate to get Noel or McLemore, especially not with the value the 2014 class could have in the top 10.
I’m hearing that the Bobcats might be willing to deal the 3rd pick. If so do you think Chicago might try to swoop in and make some kind of deal where they trade the future pick that is owed to them.
Bulls not overly active on this front… a top pick is expensive salary wise. They’ll get a solid guy at 20 and that seems to be enough.
As for the bobcats, they have tried to trade their pick every year so its nothing new… every team is shopping their pick at this time of year, its how business is done.
Do you think Howard will sign on July 10 or will he drag this on for a while? If it does go until near August, do you see teams moving on from him?
I think he’s going to meet with everyone the first week of July and make a decision before the moratorium opens. He wants closure as much as everyone else and whatever team he chooses will want to add around him, so I don’t expect it to drag beyond the 11th. I think we’ll know before that.
What about S&T deal like this:
Boston get Al Jefferson
Sacramento get Jeff Green + Celtics first round pick
Utah get Tyreke Evans and Brandon Bass
Celtics wants Big Al back, and they get rid of Bass awful contract
Kings needs SF so badly, Green would be a good addition for them.
Jazz get one more young asset and their backup PF
sure… its not been discussed, but lets put it out there and see who gets in front of their team’s GM first.
S&T CP3 to Chicago ,D Rose to LAC, who say no? Both team coming better, what you think?
Rumor has the Mavs shopping Marion + #13.
What clubs do you see as a good fit for Marion’s versatility?
Mavs are trying to dump cash and that is hard to do especially for a Vet like Marion who only fits with a team trying to play for something and those teams don’t have cap space.
Be careful about how much stock you put in to the “this team trying to trade pick” scenarios. Every team in the league is going to talk about moving up and moving down or moving out.
The Mavs are one of 30 teams trying to achieve the same goals… get their rosters better.
Just how screwed are the Lakers long term if DH 12 walks?? No young talent, most of their future draft picks belong to PHO and ORL. Could we see them down for years?
They get a ton of salary cap space in 2014 and can rebuild that way… but it won’t be pretty, they don’t have the next big thing, even if Dwight stays, he’s not a future Kobe.
I don’t think the Lakers are down for long because its a great market place and guys will want to play there, but Lakers fans have different expectations than most teams… the playoffs are not good enough and I think the championship window is closed.
Victor Oladipo’s press interview at the combine reminded me a bit of Kobe Bryant. Not saying that the talent compares, but his demeanor and personality, especially with the “I’m a weird dude” comment, made me think of Kobe. So, in the debate that teams like the Magic are having now between Oladipo vs McLemore, how much does one’s mentality and personality weigh against one’s skill level on the court? It seems to me that between those two shooting guards, they are similarly athletic and closely skilled on most aspects of the game, with McLemore being a better shooter and Oladipo having the edge on defense. Given Oladipo’s intangibles and work ethic, do you see him developing his offensive game enough to be considered an all-star someday? He’s already shown improvement in shooting in 3 years at IU, can he do the same in the NBA?
They are not separate… they are part of the make up of a player. Talent is what you see, but whats drives a guy to be great is personality and the things you don’t see. This is why I don’t put as much stock into a player’s college career as some others do.
I spend a lot of time in the gym with these guys figuring out how these guys are wired. I sit and talk with them about what they hope to be in the NBA and I have rarely been wrong on my draft guys.
Victor is compelling. He’s absolutely not anywhere near Kobe, but he could be a game changer in a class with few game changers.
I keep hearing Jeff Van Gundy’s name as a strong candidate for the Clippers job. Is there any chance he takes the job or are the Clippers just throwing around big names?
Its recruiting… they are not throwing names out… they’d genuinely like to have him. I don’t think we’ll see Jeff back on the bench any time soon. He has become a rock-star on TV, they pay him tons of money and he gets to stay home with the family more.
I think eventually someone will pry him out of TV, but its got to be a real contender and an organization Jeff respects and I don’t think Jeff has respect for the Clippers organization.
The three names being mentioned the most for the Magic at #2 is Mclemore, Burke, and Oladipo. Who do you see as being the best fit?
McLemore is the safest pick… Oladipo has the most upside… and I don’t think Burke is the guy everyone wants him to be in the NBA. I think the Magic have a better point guard in Jameer Nelson and I think they can address their long-term needs either in free agency or later in the draft.
Would be a shame to spend the #2 on Burke and him turn out to be simply average and watch Oladipo or McLemore flourish somewhere else.
Hi Steve, Do youthink Orlando can trade or Eric Bledsoe?
I think trading for Bledsoe is more appealing than drafting a point guard from this draft. It takes two teams to consummate a trade, so its not just about what Orlando wants, what do the Clips want?
Now here is something no one is hitting on yet… Clips have $45.2 million in commits including some $22 million owed to DeAndre Jordan over the next two years… Would Orlando take Jordan and Blesdoe and help the Clips clear capspace to add another player next to Chris Paul? Magic have the Dwight TPE.
It won’t just be about Orlando getting Bledsoe, its going to be about what the Clips want for him.
How high are you on Alex Len? I think he would be a perfect fit next to Davis in New Orleans, but a big man with foot problems scares me a tad. Should I be worried? And what is reasonable to expect from him to contribute from day one?
I wouldn’t spend the # 6 on him. I’d go point guard at #6… biggest area of need
Ok, So even if the Magic do not go after Bledsoe Its clear they want a new backcourt completely, new shooting guard and point guard, right?
I don’t think they are looking at the world like that… they want to improve. Not sure its as specific as “point guard, two guard” — its about talent improvement everywhere… internall growth and better fitting pieces.
2 trade proposals, what do you think. I dont see new ownership babying Cousins til he matures, everyone else his age in the L keep their composure, so should he.
1)Cousins/Thornton/Salmons for Beal/3rd/Okafor (reunited with Wall)?
2)Cousins/Hayes/Jimmer/Salmons for Bargs/T. Ross/Jonas V./Fields (could make deal smaller Cuz for Jonas/Ross)?
Here is my read on Cousins… I think they will want to meet with him themselves and get an understanding of where things stand.
If after that meeting they are not sold that DeMarcus is their guy, I could see them trading him. I don;t think they make a move based on an outsiders perspective and I think the new GM and the new coach will sit with DeMarcus and try and see whats real and whats not.
As for the trade scenarios… they have not been discussed, so its just speculation.
MORNING STEVE, DO YOU THINK THE DETROIT PISTONS WILL TRY TO TRADE FOR KEVIN LOVE? MEANING GIVE UP GREG MONROE AND STUCKEY FOR HIM.. AND TAKE CJ IN THE DRAFT AT NUMBER 8 PICK..
Kevin Love is not available in trade, so no.
Kevin and Flip have been talking a lot, Flip is mending the fence and Kevin is being consulted about a lot of things. You don’t do that if you are trading the guy.
What do you the Bobcats/Hornets do at #4? Bennet, Oladipo, trade?
Gotta know what happens at #1, #2, and #3… In my latest video Mock for USA Today I just put Victor Oladipo to them at #4.
For the Knicks isn’t matt Barnes the perfect MMLE(versus using it on Copeland or breaking up for both of them) signing he can space the floor, rebound for his position, and most importantly can guard both wing positions. Also with Barnes and Shump on the wing and Chandler hopefully coming back at full strength we would be a much better defensive team.
Not sure they are going to bring in another “difficult” to manage player. I also think they want a younger more impact type player. I agree he fits the theme of the past roster, but I am not sure they want that next year.
what do you expected lakers gonna do to move up their draft pick ? can the lakers recruit another star if howard walks and sign with rockets ? what the lakers management will do in order to rebuild ?
I do not expect the Lakers to move up. I think they’ll pick at 48 and see what they get.
The Lakers won’t have any capspace if Howard walks, so no recruiting this year… as for rebuilding, don’t you trust Jimmy Buss to lead you back to the promised land? The Lakers will have a mountain of cash and the Lakers brand to sell in free agency in 2014.
Good Morning Steve, What do you make of the rumour Eric Blesoe/Caron Butler to the Magic for Aron Afflalo Make sense for either team?
I think its one of a thousand scenarios that will play out in the media over the next 28 days…
With Chad Ford reporting yesterday about Orlando’s draft targets and an interest in Bledsoe, is Orlando just not playing things as close to vest as we thought they would? Or are they just plain rumors that Ford’s reporting?
Orlando is not talking… so anything linked to them is coming from the other side. Rumors are rumors.
Could you see a Marc Gasol/Kevin Love front court happening in the future for the Lakers? I just think they’d both complement each other, and I can see a team being built around them (plus they shoot better free throws than Dwight).
No I do not… at least not until both hit unrestricted free agency in several years.
Could Oladipo be a gamechanger for the Hawks in coach Budenholzer’s system and could the Hawks get high enough to draft him? Who do you seethe Hawks looking at in the draft?
Sure… but from what I have heard the hawks like where they are… they get two quality guys in the middle of the draft and don;t have to use a ton of cap space to get arguably the same kind of talent.
Guys… I am out of time. Thanks for all the questions. Make sure you are following me on Twitter (@stevekylerNBA). See you all next week.
