Hey Steve! Heard the Spurs are one of the teams interested in Monta Ellis. Why are they interested in him? They already have Parker, Manu and several good wing players. Unless they want him to replace either Parker/Ginobili. Also heard Spurs are interested in Oden. Any truth to that?
Welcome in everyone. Hope the week has been good to you. Free agency is in full swing and there are lots of questions to get to, so lets get after it.
First, keep in mind where the list of teams generally comes from – either the agent, the business manager or the player. If a team calls in any way, they generally end up on the list.
As a rule I always assume that in a list of five teams, three are real and two are teams that might have expressed low key interest.
The Spurs are always in the game as far as talent. Monta is extremely talented. If you could ever get him to buy into defense and a system that is not about Monta, he could be an amazing impact player. The Spurs have to replace Manu Ginobilli’s scoring. Whether they keep him or not, Manu isn’t that guy consistently anymore and Monta really could be – at the right price.
On Oden… everyone has interest in Greg, mainly because he’s been working out hard for almost two years now and has very little set back. For a low dollar deal, he could be low risk, high reward guy.
Greg is still super skilled and super talented. What he has not been able to do is stay healthy. I think a large number of teams are willing to take the million dollar flyer on Greg, the questions is will someone offer $2 million or $3 million to get him.
What do you think about Indiana and CJ Watson? Granger staying in Indiana? Starter or bench?
Exactly what they needed. CJ has always been a little under rated.
Its not very hard to get Kevin Pritchard to gush about the endless possibilities with Danny Granger and Paul George together. I doubt seriously that Granger is moved before the start of the season. At the trade deadline maybe… but the Pacers don’t want to take back money. So they’ll let Danny’s deal come off the books and the bulk of that money goes to Paul George in his next deal.
As for Starter or not… up to Coach Vogel… my sense is both start.
If Evans joins Pelicans, does Gordon get moved?
The initial word is no… Grevis Vasquez and Robin Lopez are the guys I am hearing will be moved.
I think there is a sign and trade or the Kings match. Evans is continuing to meet with teams, so he may not even take the Pelicans offer.
Hi Steve. What’s the latest with Manu Ginobili? Is he retiring or re-signing with the Spurs?
He is going to meet with the Spurs, but nothing is firm yet. There are some other teams trying to make the Spurs move first with offers. He’ll have the chance to play if he wants to, not sure that has been decided yet.
Where is the best fit for Greg Oden and why?
If I were advising Greg… I’d say Miami. Great staff. Low pressure for him personally. Will win, will be around guys that genuinely care about each other. It is a super controlled environment. Will be a low expectation, high reward situation. There is no money there, so that is hard to consider when you are outside the NBA.
When team reps meet with free agents is there restrictions on the team in terms of what they can give a player gift wise, dinner expenses, flying him places…ala the tight restrictions in the NCAA when dealing with recruits? I mean can Houston walk in and say “D.Howard we would love to have you and here is a red cherry Porsche as something to remember us by”.
No teams can not offer a red cherry Porsche… they can offer “token” items, the Rockets are kings of the iPad.
But no, a team can’t say we’ll do our free agent meeting in Fiji, here’s a plane ticket. Most of the major free agents make teams come to them. But its not at all uncommon for teams that get guys to come to a city, for them to be wined and dined and put up in a nice hotel, completely allowed.
The New York Knicks seemed to get the best of the Raptors in the Andrei Bargnani trade. The Knicks got a 7-footer who averaged 19.5 a game only two years ago giving them a stretch four who can come off the bench and score some points. The first round pick going to Toronto will be late given the Nuggets right to swap picks. Who do you think got the best of the NYC / Raptors trade and why?
Both sides got exactly what they wanted.
Raptors are likely flipping Camby to another team, so they dump Barg’s contract money off on New York and get a draft pick for a guy they wanted gone. We’ll see what they get for Camby, maybe another young piece
If Terrance Ross was in this past draft, where would you rank him among fellow SG: Oladlpo, McLemore, Caldwell Pope, and CJ MClummon.
In that mix… the problem with TRoss is that during the workout process he was a little smaller and teams didn’t see him like you see him now.
It was absolutely about workouts not being a good indicator of his ability in the NBA. Not sure that would have changed much.
The New Orleans Pelicans has reportedly offered Tyreke Evans a 4 year / 40-44 million dollar contract. If you were the GM of the Pelicans would you have done the same or try and sign one of the bigs: Jefferson or Pekovic. Knowing your teams needs to make a playoff run this year given they traded their first round pick for next year.
The most expensive players in the NBA are players other teams want… for NOLA to get Tyreke they have to over pay for him or Sacramento matches.
As for the bigs you mention, you are missing the key part… just because I want you in NOLA does not mean you have any interest in NOLA. Tyreke was interested in NOLA because of the money offered. Al Jefferson and Nikola are going to get offers better than $11 million per year.
I think George and Granger can co-exist now that George has had his chance to show he is the guy, what do you think? How would Stephenson look as 6th man?
I think the Pacers agree with you… as for Lance, as long as he’s playing a major role, I am not sure it matter if he starts.
There are different reports out on the New Orleans / Philly trade with Holiday and Noel. Some say the first round pick is top 3 protected. Others say top 5. Can you please confirm which one.
I have been told its top five protected in 2014. The initial Twitter reports had it as top three, but after that flurry it was made clear by people I trust its top five protected.
What do you think of the rumoured Dunlevy to Chicago signing? Seems like another offseason of the Bulls not really addressing their needs. Surely SG and a reserve C are their most pressing needs. For 3 mil per, I would prefer to bring Belinelli back, assuming he couldn’t get more elsewhere. Even better, someone else who can create his own shot to take pressure off of Rose. Your thoughts on Chicago?
Dunleavy is a better option that Marco — he is more versatile and he can play defense. Marco struggled on defense.
As or the two guard stuff… they told Jimmy Butler to be ready to start at the two next year, so that’s why no two in the off-season although Dunleavy plays like a two.
The Bulls are not done yet, they will have to wait for the money to dry up because they don;t have the means to compete with some of the dollar amounts being thrown around.
I think Chicago is in a great position if they can get and stay healthy.
What would it take for Portland to consider letting Aldridge go? Deng makes no sense for them, they already have Batum. But with a 3rd team involved it could get a little more interesting. Cleveland could really do with Deng for instance.
Cavs – Deng
Por – Varejao, Cha 1st rd, ballast
Bulls – Aldridge
I seriously doubt Portland moves LaMarcus… they are a bench away from being a real team in the West and they’ve addressed a ton of that in the draft and will round it out in free agency.
Was just watching some Aldridge highlight vids and man he’s got some pretty good low-post moves! I was wondering if the Rockets can pair him up with DH if they get him. He has the size, skills and length to play the 5 as well. Got good range so DH can hog the paint while he can still contribute. Lin + Asik and some draft picks be good enough?
Again… not sold that the LaMarcus trade talk is real.
I don’t really get LAC’s interest in Tony Allen. While his defence would help, do you think his lack of shooting would be a problem? They need an upgrade in that area. If they could find an upgrade for Butler, that would be a step in the right direction too. Would Bledsoe entice the Bulls to discuss Jimmy Butler?
Tony is one of the best defenders at his position… he has a history with Doc Rivers and he is a hard nosed player that would bolster the Clips locker room.
Clips turning away Bledsoe offers and there is almost no scenario is which Chicago trades Jimmy Butler.
Rumors of Mavs/Clips S&T Mayo for Bledsoe.
If Mavs get Bledsoe, do you flip him for Rondo, or do you hand the keys to the unproven starter?
Boston emphatically denying they are willing to trade Rajon Rondo — from the minute the Dallas rumor surfaced Boston has been shooting it down.
I know Doc Rivers likes OJ Mayo, but he has said repeatedly he’s looking to add to the roster not subtract and has turned away Bledsoe trade talks. Its Doc’s show now on personnel and he is not worried about next summer.
Hi Steve. What is the most plausible long shot you can see the Spurs making in free agency?
Not sure they are aiming for long shots… heard they love Al Jefferson and that they made calls on Marcin Gortat. They just came off the NBA Finals so its not like they need a major overhaul. They have money to add, but keeping the core together (Manu, Splitter and Gary Neal) is first priority, then add to it.
What do you think Mark Cuban’s plan will be if he misses out on Dwight? Does Cuban look elsewhere for immediate improvement to appease Dirk, or does he try remain flexible for next summer (like he did last year)?
They have been reaching out to other guys… Andre Iguodala, Josh Smith, Monta Ellis… they have talked to OJ Mayo about coming back.
Hey Steve, all these teams are talking it seems, but as usual you dont hear anything really from Utah. Theyve got 27m+ they have to spend just to get to the minimum. Who do you see as their biggest signing?
Kevin O’Connor talked about it yesterday on 1280 The Zone
“You’ve got to sit on your hands a little bit and understand that the first five or six days, it’s usually a deal that’s in favor of the player.”
They have reached out to a dozen or so players including Paul Milsap and OJ Mayo, so they are not idle… they just are not going to overpay for talent.
Any chance Orlando Magic move summer league to UCF/Rollins College so fans can attend in the near future??
No plans for that. Magic and the teams that commit to Orlando like the private, non-fan nature of the Orlando league.
I asked why they didn’t open up the main arena for a day or two, turns out the Magic can use their practice facility at any time, but use of the main floor in Amway has a cost associated.
As far as moving it… not sure I see that in the future.
Is David Lee really on the move?
No. The Warriors would consider it if they could seriously upgrade, but its not like they are trying to get rid of David Lee.
When you want a better asset you have to give up a good asset… so would they move David Lee to get Dwight Howard? Absolutely. Beyond something major like that the Warriors are not “shopping” Lee. They know he is a valuable asset.
Is Josh Smith in Denver, good fit? And what should Denver do with Faried ih they sign Josh?
They have no money to sign Josh, it would take a sign and trade deal to happen.
A. Bynum – with the injuries what salary is he trying to sign at?
Its not like he has a price tag around his neck… they are looking for as much money as possible, but also a situation where Andrew can thrive. Not saying he’ll leave money on the table, but he’s looking for the perfect match or money, opportunity and role.
He is a huge risk because of the knees. He could head some of that off with a knee exclusion in his deal that lets his team out of money if he misses a ton of games to knee problems.
What’s going on with the Pistons? DO you think they will land Josh Smith or Iggy? If Calderon signs elsewhere will they pursue a PG?
They are being aggressive in getting in front of guys, but until dwight Howard takes some money off the table a lot of guys are in holding patterns. Detroit supposedly made a solid impression on Josh.
Dear Mr. Kyler,
question from Lithuania: majority of people in Baltics and Europe see and really like Mindaugas Kupsas development during past 2 years.
Do you see him one day playing in NBA and what he needs to improve more to open NBA doors?
Any other comments on Mindaugas Kupsas form Your side, Mr. Steve?
thank You so much!
I like Kupsas… really thought he’d get drafted. The rumor was he was supposed to be with New Orleans in Summer League but they changed course not sure where he’ll land.
Teams like his low post skills, but he has to get significantly better at basketball and that’s not going to happen in Lithuania (no offense) – had Kupsas done real training in the States and done real workouts for teams he might have been drafted.
I get the loyalty guys have to their national teams and programs, but if you want to be in the NBA you have to train for it and unfortunately he did not get a chance to do that, so he is on the outside looking in.
Jefferson to Bobcats? Wise or foolish?
Just talking at this point… they need to get some talent and Al Jeff is super talented. I think others offer more.
is brandan wright a “cheap” bargain like mini MLE cheap?
Doubtful… he has to go where the money is and someone might offer him better money that the mini-Mid Level. There is too much free agent money laying around. He’s a guy that could get a silly one-year deal.
How will eric bledsoe do as a starting 2 guard on the LA clippers? try out the experiment or trade him?
Have heard nothing at all about Bledsoe starting at the two… they are aggressively looking at shooting guards in free agency. The could trade him at the deadline, but all indications are he’s staying with the team.
You never say never, but it doesn’t look like Doc wants to part with him. Remember Chris Paul is not the most durable point guard in the NBA, you’ll need a capable starter for at least ten games every year and you can not spot the West ten games and compete for homecourt.
Should the Wolves look at Ellis to pair in the back court with Rubio, or preferably after resigning Pekovic, maybe getting Iggy and starting Shabbazz at the SG?
He is not someone they have targeted… the order looks like JJ Redick, OJ Mayo, Kevin Martin…
Since Marcus Camby has expressed his desire to play for a contender, will a trade to Miami for Canadian Joel Anthony + varnardo work for both Heat and Raptors?
Doubtful… why would Toronto take on Joel Anthony’s contract?… Have heard nothing along those lines.
Guys… I am out of time. Thanks for all the questions. Make sure you are following me on Twitter (@stevekylerNBA). See you all next week.
