What happens with Memphis next? Is there a shake up coming or do they stick to what they have? Will they be a luxury tax team? Is one of Randolph or Gay likely to go?
Steve Kyler
Welcome in everyone. Hope your week was good to you. Not sure If I will chat next week as I am on the road checking in on draft guys, so we’ll see how the schedule shakes out. Lots of questions in the queue, so lets get after them.
Micheal Heisley has said he won’t pay Luxury Tax, that does not mean he has to pass on guys now or trade now… he has until the trade deadline next February before he’s locked in on tax, but it does mean someone the odd guy out.
I think they have to look at what Rudy Gay would return in trade and for a team like Houston or a team like Boston thats gonna have a ton of cash to spend they might get serious about Rudy.
The Griz tried real hard to Ray Allen at the trade deadline so Boston could try and do something with Ray in a sign and trade if he’d buy off on that, which I doubt he would.
Short answer… I expect some change in Memphis, not sure they are blowing the team up.

Where do you think Jamal Crawford go this summer??
Who are the other players(mainly role players, young veterans) which they will try free agency, (based on the sources you talk)? Can you inform it with me right now?? Thanks Steve
Steve Kyler
Wow… a little aggressive.
Jamal is going where he can get paid… I think he regrets not taking Minnesota’s deal and I know he’ll talk with them. But this is a money decision for Jamal.
I think you guys are getting too far ahead on the free agency front… Teams will try and solve problems in the draft and via trade first… free agents come after that.

What about a Turk,Redick for Joe Johnson trade,Atl saves money longterm,Orl gets a star to appease Dwight?
Steve Kyler
Are you forgetting that Joe Johnson is an All-Star?
The Hawks won’t be trading Joe Johnson for Hedo and JJ…
Also your overstating what would or would not appease Dwight Howard… He’s still trying to dig out the the knife in his back… Not sure roster change will matter.
Dwight Howard
Where do you see me playing next season?
Steve Kyler
Unless the DeVos family pulls off some kind of miracle hire at GM and coach I think Dwight is done in Orlando.
I think all the people in Dwight’s life got to say “I told you” when this thing went down, and I think the fact that so much of what was said and what was talked about got out that there is no trust between Dwight and the organization and the marriage is over.
The question is can the Magic get real value for him now or will it have to be closer to the start of the season after he proves he is 100% after back surgery?
If I had to guess where he’ll be… Brooklyn?… especially if they get some lottery luck and land a pick in the top three.

Hey Steve. Really curious about my Utah Jazz. They exceeded expectations but showed also what they are lacking: PG and shooting. They have some bigs so a trade for PG? I’d like to see them get GS’s draft pick, grab Lilliard and then also sign Steve Nash for couple years to mentor him and help this team contend. Otherwise, either go get Dragic or Mo Williams. Who could Al or Paul be traded for? What do you think they will/should do?
Steve Kyler
Guys… Players don’t mentor each other…. Steve Nash isn’t signing a contract somewhere to teach another kid how to play. That does not happen.
Do teams sign veteran guys to be role models for guys sure… but this is a cut throat business, guys really help each other that each others job… At the end of the line a guy might say I’ll go be a veteran somewhere and be a locker room guy, but guys like Nash won’t be a tutor for young guys.
Equally, I don’t see any scenario in which Nash chooses Utah… He’s either staying in Phoenix or he’s going to a bona fide contender.
I love Lillard in Utah, he is the missing piece.
Dr. J
Let’s say that someone behind Golden State moves up in the lottery and Utah gets the #8 pick. We know that GS really wants their pick in the draft this season. With this draft scenario how about this trade GS gets: #8 pick, Devin Harris, Raja Bell and Future 1st rounder UT gets: Stephen Curry and Andris Beidrins. GS gets their pick back and relief from Beidrins contract, UT gets the PG/outside shooter they need. Everyone is happy, right?
Steve Kyler
No… Warriors wouldn’t do that deal.
Sweet Dee
There was a great article on Hoopsworld recently which spoke about accountability in the voting process. Right now, media members who vote for awards (ex. MVP or ROY) remain anonymous. But looking at this years totals, there were votes for Josh Shelby and Derrick Rose even though both played less than 40 games. If names were beside the vote I believe nonsensical votes such as these would decrease. Or at worst, members of the media will be discredited and ridiculed by peers which helps self govern itself. Support this rule change? And do you think we will ever see it in the NBA?
Steve Kyler
This is something thats been discussed.
I am a member of the Professional Basketball Writers Association and this has been a topic discussed with the league…. they are all for accountability and transparency. I think you’ll see something on this soon.
The problem is not that its anonymous… the problem is who gets the vote.
Each teams designates two people in their market… so thats 60 of the votes… there are 61 more from a national pool picked by the NBA, which includes their broadcast partners.
The problem is the teams designate their own staffers, personalities or broadcast partners that would vote for their own guys.
I don’t think the issue is so much about anonymous or not anonymous… its more about having a panel thats is credible.
I think if the public saw the names of some of the guys voting, the awards would lose a lot of luster because the best guys are not always voting.
D
If there is one question you could ask the guy that voted Otis Smith 3rd in the executive of the year award, what would it be? I would ask him do you even watch basketball?
Steve Kyler
I heard a good joke on this… Otis did more than help his team… he helped all 29 other teams putting some of the guys on the roster that he did…. doesn’t that deserve a vote.
I am sure somewhere some one tried to rationalize this and say… The Magic were a winning team this year with a circus of unimaginable proportions going on around them… Ryan Anderson emerged… Glen Big Baby Davis emerged and Oh he’ll be out of a job soon, so lets give him some third place love.

Steve, the pop-up ads on this website are so annoying. Can’t something be done to stop them, change them, or remove them? Some change is fine, and I don’t disagree with your need for revenue and advertising, but these are so frustratingly annoying. Please!
Steve Kyler
We don’t control that… We are owed by USA Today and they traffic whatever they want to traffic.
Our guys are paid to do this, so in order for that to happen revenue has to be generated and they are going to do whatever they feel will do that.
We convey our concerns and user satisfaction is a concern, but we don;t control what ads are run any more. Completely out of my hands…. COMPLETELY!

A few weeks ago, you commented to a draft question and asserted that you felt Anthony Davis was a “more polished KG.” Having seen the legacy of KG’s career and all that he has brought, are you saying Anthony Davis will or has the potential to surpass KG when all is said and done?
Steve Kyler
Maybe… KG is a special talent, because its not just his skill as a player but his relentless drive, motor and competitive spirit. Not sure Anthony Davis has that same inner fire that burns for KG.
Skill wise I’d say he’s better than KG was at the same age, but Davis has to land in the right situation and keep working.
KG is a tireless worker.
John
How will you remember nash, dirk, kobe, and duncan on and off the court when they retire?
Steve Kyler
answered this last week….
Brandon
When the fireworks start for the magic. We’re getting restless in Orlando. Also i was thinking Ryan Anderson s&t for tyreke Evans who says no?
Steve Kyler
You are assuming Ryan wants to go to Sacramento. Not sure thats where he’s like to be.
The Magic are paying Otis and Stan regardless of whether they fire them or not…. so there is no urgency to this. The Magic have started draft prep with their existing staff. They have been talking with Dwight Howard and the agents for their guys, so they have a sense of things. They are not sitting idle, they just haven’t finalized anything yet.
You have to get in a room without heart ache and emotion and make some decisions and I think you’ll see that happen this week.
I think all of the guys they’d want to hire as replacements are still working… so there is no rush.
Brandon
Also the rumor of the rockets going after Dwight? Not bad for magic if they get two first rounders in this years draft and dragic s&t and parsons would this be the best offer for the magic?
Steve Kyler
Not sure Dwight wants any part of Houston, but they have trade chips and desire.
It would likely be a rental, but the Rockets seem OK with that idea assuming he gets to Houston, they have some success and he wants to stay long term.
Aristotle
Hi Steve,
Is it a fair call to say that the dreams Miami had with the Big Three will be under threat if they lose the series to the Pacers?
Possible coaching change? Bosh as trade bait? Miller amnestied?
Steve Kyler
I do think if the HEAT are eliminated Pat Riley will have some choices to make.
Not sure amnesting Miller helps much… you still pay him. You have to pay for his replacement and you likely won’t get as good a guy… If you are paying Mike $5 million, and have to pay another guy $5 million to replace him, your paying $10 mill to be different.
Whats Chris Bosh worth in trade?… People in Miami have been asking if its LeBron the HEAT should trade – not sure the HEAT would consider that but wouldn’t that be something.
Paul
Hey,
if Rose is really going to miss up to 12 months (in other words: the entire next season) wouldn’t it be smart to amnesty Boozer in the summer, let go of Korver, Brewer and get a lottery pick to pair with Rose in 2013? They’d also have capspace in 2013. I understand it would be hard to sell that to their fanbase, but their lineup without Rose just went down to an eigth seed, so getting a lottery pick in my eyes would be smarter than playing next season to reach 6-8th seed.
Steve Kyler
Hard to sell to the fan base?… It would be impossible to sell to the roster or the coaching staff.
No chance thats happening or the thought process in Chicago.
They could amnesty Boozer, but your giving him $47 million to go play for someone else — likely Orlando, Miami, New York or Boston… then you have to fill his void with more money.
Trevor
You mentioned in your NBA AM the 3 bigs who are stuck, would any of them LAL for instance be willing to send Pau for Anderson/Hedo/1st package? LAL cuts salary Anderson would play very well next to Bynum maybe even better as Bynum is a better Off player than Dwight and Hedo can help at the 3 spot?
Steve Kyler
Magic don;t control Ryan Anderson any more, so he;d have to want to go to LA.
I doubt seriously the Magic take on Gasol’s contract. $19,000,000 next year, $19,285,850 in 2013 when the Magic would have a ton of cap room before the deal.
Remember they are still paying Gilbert $60 million.
Josh
If you’re Cavs mgmt – you get the second pick in the draft – obviously Anthony Davis is gone – who do you pick? Kidd-Gilchrist, Beal, Drummond, Robinson or Barnes?
Steve Kyler
Beal… then MKG.
I think Beal is going to be an amazing talent and playing next to Kyrie locks in an old-world back-court for the next 10 years. Beal will be wide open a lot, and between Kyrie and Beal the Cavs would lead the league in 3% percentage.
ap
Do you think the raps should move their pick and a couple young pieces to try and bring in a player like jennings, tyreke, or gay?
Steve Kyler
No… stay with the draft, you can get better talent cheaper.
Lucas
Good morning Steve, great chat as always. Few Qs for you today. What do you think the Hawks do this off season to change it up? Possible to amnesty JJ instead of Marvin and free up some money?
The 76ers are just one piece away to be contender, who do you see as a good fit for the team and the system there?
Big P.Ewing fan from his playing days @ MSG, do you think he gets the head coaching job in Charlotte? So much hype surrounding his interview, if he doesn’t…
What do you hear on the D. Howard situation in Orl?
As always, thanks for your time.
Cheers.
Steve Kyler
— I think they are going shopping, but keep in mind Rick Sund’s contract is up so they could make a GM change as well as a coaching change too. That has gotta happen first.
— It does not free up money… just cap space. You still pay Joe to go and play somewhere else. No. I don;t see the hawks amnesting their All-Star two guard.
— Getting older will help. They have the draft and an off-season to fine tune. They are not missing much.
— Would be a terrible hire. He is not heading coaching material. I like Pat but he would be an awful head coach. He’ll take the job for cheap, so that makes him a possibility.
— Doom and Gloom and mass destruction. I doubt anyone is back in Orlando next year. There could be a house cleaning of epic proportions coming.

What free agents do you see the Bobcats going after this offseason and who would be good fits? I like Malone as our next coach what are your thoughs on him?
Steve Kyler
Bobcats won’t be big free agent players. They are building with youth. Do not expect much from them in the free agent market.
Adrian
How ironic is it that Steve Blake misses the shot that would have fallen to Derek Fisher last night!
Steve Kyler
I can’t believe someone hacked his Wikipedia page.

Assuming the Heat and Celtics meet in the ECF. Do the Heat need Bosh to beat the Celtics? Or, are the Heat still the dominant team without Bosh?
Steve Kyler
I am not assuming that… If Indiana can find a way to generate some offense in the 4th quarter they are going to win this series.
Bosh won’t be back for the Eastern Conference Finals, so his role is moot… as for the Celtics. If they play they way they did last night, not sure anyone can beat them.
Vincent
do the rockets have a chance at nicolas batum or eric gordon?
Steve Kyler
Not unless they offer Max money… both will likely be restricted and anything remotely reasonable will be matched.

In the history of the NBA, has there been a team who won the NBA lottery that traded their No. 1 pick? To your knowledge, in the last decade was there ever a time that two teams were in serious discussions in trading the No. 1 player for another/others, that just did not push through?
Steve Kyler
Not sure I understand… has a team ever traded the top pick?
The Orlando magic drafted Chris Webber #1 overall and traded him for Penny Hardaway… but that was on draft day.
Teams talk about trading the #1 all the time, but the price gets too high.
Jake Smith
What will the Orlando Magic try to do this summer in terms of their roster?
Steve Kyler
hard to say… we need to know who is calling the shots in the front office and on the bench.
Hard to talk about a meal until you know who is buying the groceries and doing the cooking.
Reggie
If you had to guess, when next season tips off who will be:
the magic’s GM, Coach, Best Player?
Steve Kyler
It would be a totally left field guess and I am not putting anything out there thats not at least based in some information.
I can tell you I don’t believe it will be Otis Smith, Stan Van Gundy and Dwight Howard…

Hey Steve, good day to you! Couple of questions:
1. Besides the obvious (Sac Kings), what other teams could move to Seattle?
2. Could expansion be an option?
3. If so, what markets are realistic? (ex. San Diego, Seattle)
4. Who do you have coming out of the East as of today? West? I’ll go with Boston and San Antonio
Steve Kyler
Sacramento is the only club that does not have a hefty lease or contract attached. Memphis, Atlanta and Charlotte all have MONSTER exit penalties. Memphis is possible in like 2017 if attendance stinks. The rest would require $100 million or more payments to the cities they play in. So the Kings have value because they can be moved relatively cheaply.
Not in this economy. The NBA has said domestic expansion is no longer an option. Too many existing teams are struggling to sell their games. They won’t toss a 31st team into the mix. if there is expansion in the next decade, it will be International expansion in Europe.
If Seattle builds a new building, they are in the mix. Kansas City, Anaheim, Las Vegas, Louisville and St. Louis have all been mentioned. Larry Ellison wants a team in San Jose and the Warriors are likely moving to San Francisco in the next five years. I know there was talk of Vancouver again, but the folks that run the building say its not in the future.
Guys… I am out of time. Thanks for all the questions. Make sure you are following me on Twitter (@stevekylerNBA). See you all next week.
