HOOPSWORLD Publisher Steve Kyler will hold his weekly chat at 10:30am EST on Thursdays. Drop in your questions regarding NBA trades, the NBA Draft, roster moves or questions about your team.
What time is the trade deadline?
Welcome in everyone… the deadline his hear and I am going to try and keep up with the chat and news at the same time, so please bear with me. There has also been some pretty aggressive site caching added to handle the increased traffic of the Trade Deadline so what I type is going to be about 300 seconds behind. Lots to get to, so lets get after it. I will add this little short cut for you if you need it — [REFRESH THIS PAGE]
The Trade Deadline is at 3pm EST today (Thursday the 21st). All trades must be submitted to the league for approval before 3pm EST, however trade calls can and often do take place after 3pm.
As long as the trade is submitted by 3pm EST it can be consummated assuming it meets the league requirements for a deal.
Every trade has to be cleared by the league, it involves a designated representative from each team and the NBA’s legal team. They go over every detail of the trade and make sure that its in line with league rules on trades and works under the salary cap.
Hey Steve – what are the chances that Andrea Bargnani gets traded? It’s looking unlikely in Toronto, which might not be the worst thing even though fans think it is.
If an 11th hour deal is reached, what team players are most likely to be involved?
I have been warning you guys on this… the league is not overly interest in Bargs. He has a suspect work ethic. He is owed a mountain of money and in Toronto’s case he is worth more to them on the roster now than they can get in trade.
I expect Toronto to try and move him this summer around the draft or free agency, but it just does not seem like there is a deal for Bargs that makes sense for Toronto.
Seems like Sebastian Telfair is the guy they are targeting today, should get done barring something silly.
What are the odds of Smith not getting traded to Milwaukee or Brooklyn.
Not sure Brooklyn is in the race anymore… looks like Houston and Milwaukee. ATL would rather move Josh to a Western Conference team, but Houston is not giving up the world for a guy they can sign in 3 months for nothing.
I still see Phoenix as a dark horse… They have the pieces for a deal. ATL did the background on the guys Phoenix offered. I think Phoenix is worried Josh will cost too much and could walk away if they don’t offer MAX money.
I think Houston is being mindful that if they do too much for Josh, they wouldn’t have room for Howard too. That is their dream plan… to get both guys. Thats also why ATL may not trade Josh to Houston… could take them out of Howard sweepstakes in July.
Why doesnt Utah move Jefferson, Marvin WIlliams, Evans to Phx (whom seem willing to over pay for a star player)for Dudley, Gortat, Johnson, Picks? Utah retains around the same amount of cap space for next offseason While adding to there bench for next season. Phx gets a player thats known as a scorer, which they desperately need?
Then Utah trades Millsap, Bell for Roy, D. Williams, Luke Ridnour, Pick. Utah waives Roy adds to there deepth and moves forward with Max Salary Space this next offseason and a few more assets for the future. It might not be a championship team but they will built better for the future.
See… I said I wasn’t doing this today.
Why doesn’t Utah do the dream trade you’d love… because they can’t pull it off.
It takes two teams to agree on a deal, and Phoenix isn’t going to do the one sides deal you want. Doesn’t work that way.
Its also monumentally hard to trade a ton of guys at the trade deadline without completely destroying your team. Huge risk for a borderline playoff team like Utah.
Making the postseason matter more than almost anything in Utah.
Why doesnt Utah gamble and make a move for D. Howard? Will he really leave 30 million on the table to go to Dallas? Utah has the pieces to get it done, Either Jefferson, Millsap, with Marvin Williams, Bell for Howard, Peace, Blake or Duron. Might be worth the gamble? Favors with Howard….Unstopable with Kanter off the bench
Lakers won’t trade him and he’d never ever agree to stay there.
SO whats the Max for Josh Smith? And why don’t we hear about Josh Smith being traded to Utah?
The exact number is based on where the salary cap gets set… the latest projections from the league peg the cap to clock in at just at $59 million and the tax to be just at or over $71 million. Those numbers get finalized in July and the cap gets agreed upon then.
Based on last year… Max is determined based on how long you have been in the league. Josh Smith has been in for 9 season including this year.
As for Utah… he won’t re-sign there.
so beside jj will magic move any of there other assets. Will jj get traded??
Looking more and more likely JJ is moved… not sure Orlando feels like they “have” to move JJ, but there are offers meeting Orlando’s price. They’ll try and jockey a little more out of it and that is where another player might come into it.
I know Orlando would love to move Glen Davis, Al Harrington and Hedo Turkoglu, but all of them have their own issues… injured, suspended, health status unclear.
I think it will be JJ and that is about it and there is just too much talk surrounding JJ to think Orlando doesn’t make a deal with him.
Could a Timofey Mozgov for Steve Novak be a possible trade scenario?
Not sure that is what Denver is looking for… works under the cap.
At the end of the day, where will Josh Smith end up?
Right now… Milwaukee or Houston. As I said earlier, I still think Phoenix could get him if they are willing to risk they next part which is re-signing him in July.
Both Milwaukee and Houston have something to play for this year and a compelling situation tomorrow. Phoenix doesn’t offer that so its a bigger risk for them… better pieces for ATL.
Any chance Big Al or Millsap get moved? If so, who are the suitors?
Really quiet on those guys. If Utah does something, they have kept it on the down low for sure. Thats how they do it.
I’d watch San Antonio – they could do a DeJuan Blair Stephen Jackson deal and then buyout Jax, but that’s garbage in terms of return for Jefferson. I think they know they can do better in a sign and trade.
With the Knicks on this current losing skid, should the make a move today?
They swung for the fences with Josh Smith… offered Amar’e and Shumpert… Atlanta said no.
They have Ronnie Brewer and Steve Novak out there… they like Jared Dudley and Luke Ridnour, not sure either guy gets that done.
At the end of the day, JJ Redick will be wearing a. . . .?
Bucks, Spurs, 76ers and Pacers are all in the mix… Orlando not tipping their hand yet.
Are the Celtics and Lakers really going to sit out this trading deadline?
Lakers trying to dump non-core guys (EBanks, Duhon, DMorris, Steve Blake) to reduce tax hit… Celtics dangling the likes of Brandon Bass and Courtney Lee for a veteran point guard.
Celtics are said to still be in the Josh Smith discussions, not sure they have the pieces to get him without including Paul Pierce.
Is it true Toronto cant find a suitor for Andrea, if so do you see him as a raptors for life considering that Bryan cant seem to let go?
As I said… he’s got a touch contract to rationalize in a new tighter NBA economy.
He is owed $10.7 million next years, that is 18% of the salary cap – that a huge chunk for what he is as a player and he’s owed two more years at $22 million. Raptors might have to wait until he’s expiring and Jose Calderon him.
I think they could move him, but what they could get back would be garbage contracts.
Things are heating up, pacers shopping, augusting, hansbrough, and green, also offered magic a 1st for redick. Do you see anything happening here?
They are trying… they’d love to get Redick and feel like they could re-sign him.
If the Lakers Renounce Dwight and amnesty Pau would they have enough cap room to make a deal for Smith over the summer? He would seem to be a better fit for them and they don’t have the parts to get him now.
Seek medical attention… I think you have a head injury.
Steve, you do a great job, just wondering if the Knicks could sneak in and land a guy like Milsap? How attractive, how much is a package of Shumpert, Brewer, Copeland worth? Does Pablo have any trade value to a team seeking a backup PG?
They do not seem to be moving in that direction… heard Carmelo got pretty agitated when Iman Shumpert rumors surfaced and went to ownership urging them to keep team together. They have really downgraded their pursuit of trades. They wants a veteran guard and that is about it.
Hey Steve, Do you think the Warriors will do anything before the deadline?
They need to dump about $850K to get under the tax line and are AGGRESSIVELY trying to do that, so there are some free players to be had in Oakland… you may not want them – Jeremy Tyler, Charles Jenkins and Kent Bazemore — they might give up a pick to get under the line, simply to avoid wasting a Tax payer year in new repeater system.
who might the pistons trade
They may be done. Keep hearing that they won’t move Rodney Stuckey, but it seems like he needs to go for their salary cap plans in July.
Do you think the San Antonio Spurs do any move? Looks like there playing great together so far this year and maybe a trade would mess up what they have going for them?
I like to add a Al Jefferson, Josh Smith or JJ Red…..but if you laying this well, do you stir the pot?
They have to do something with DeJuan Blair, even if its a 2nd round pick.
They are at the table with Orlando and JJ Redick and they have sniffed around Ronnie Brewer in New York.
Raptors Panic Trade for Boozer?
Chicago won’t do it.
Will the new CBA limit teams with big cap money like the Jazz have? And will it make it easier for Jazz to lure big free agents, since they cant sign other places? If so, would it be smart for Jazz to let everyone expire and go after free agents or should they make a trade?
Not at all… whats its going to do is make Utah’s money more attractive because teams will be forced to the middle.
The first thing players care about is $$… 2nd is lifestyle and 3rd is team environment and for some that is likely interchangeable.
When the money is equal, that’s when where you play matters a lot and Utah loses that argument every time. No nightlife, no social scene, no media exposure. Its beautiful city and a nice place to raise a family, not a very special place to be a 20-something world class athlete.
The new CBA will make money more important, but shorter contracts mean more teams will have money every summer. Utah has to build a winning culture and be smart about who they ay going forward so when big fish come along they can say we have money and a winner… they might get guys that way.
But seriously… at the end of the day smaller markets have to draft and develop players, they can’t count on free agency. Remember cap space can be used to trade for guys already under contract too.
Will the Wolves be able to move Ridnour for anything useful, like Courtney Lee or can they snag Redick from Orlando with a 1st rounder and something?
Not sure the Wolves are at the front of anyone list… I think once Redick domino falls, then Wolves assets become more attractive.
Mayo gor granger? Who says no?
Not on the table
I keep hearing Millsap to Minnesota rumors. Why would they trade for a three month rental when it’s alrady looking like they’re out of the playoff race?
They’d love to have him, but its not going to happen.
As for why, once you have a guy and his Bird Rights, you have a better chance of keeping him especially if you’ll overpay a little.
Is Thomas Robinson looked at as the future PF of the Rockets, or more likely just a trade chip to flip for some other star player (e.g. Josh Smith today)? What is Robinson’s upside, and would the Rockets be smart to just sit pat and let this team develop with Robinson and DMo (who has the higher upside?) getting time at the 4?
Love the TRob deal… he was a shell of himself in Sacramento, he’ll flourish in Houston and he solves their biggest problem… post oriented offense.
As for Donatas Motiejunas he still hasn’t put together a solid string of games. He is great one night and really average the next. Needs to find some kind of consistency.
I was going to apply for some jobs today online, but this seems more interesting.
Do the Wolves make any moves by the deadline?
Prior to Toronto signing Telfair, I always thought a good deal for both the Raptors and T-Wolves would be Ridnour, and Williams for either Ross, or DeRozan.
What names do you hear Minny targeting?
Good use of your time… who needs money right?
Wolves are trying to make a deal.
Raptors would never have traded DeMar or TRoss, so cross that off the list.
Minnesota tried for Timofey Mozgov (turned away), they have been at Orlando for JJ Redick and they have tried to pry Paul Millsap out of Utah… they just don’t have the sexy chips to really make a deal.
Any word on if the Pacers will make a move?
They are trying… not sure they are there. Watch them on JJ Redick, they could go all in and give Orlando multiple picks (first and second) – they feel like if they can get him they can re-sign him.
As a downtrodden Bobcats fan can you shed any light on what the Cats are doing and what you think they might really swing today?
I don’t think Charlotte has anything they can do… Brooklyn passed on Ben Gordon… Gerald Henderson is attractive and could be an option for Indiana, but hard to read whats real with them.
What about the Thomas Robinson deal? Is this bad lottery decision just a result of an overhyped March run like many of us thought? Or… does TRob actually have a huge upside and just didn’t get along with Demarcus Cousins?
It was terrible fit in Sacramento… He was miserable and ineffective because of how they play. I think he’ll flourish in Houston. Better system, better teammates and a chance to win games. He’ll see more open looks because of the perimeter game Houston has and he’ll get post work that he rarely got in Sacramento.
Sacramento cashed him out… it was a money grab to the tune of about $2.2 million ($1.2 mil in prorated saved salary, roughly $1 million in cash) for the Maloofs and that is why it was done on their side.
Sure seems quiet in Utah. Does it look like both Al Jeff & Milsap stay for the season? Are they really willing to get nothing for a good big, strange.
They have had this stance all year… making the playoffs is all that matters. if they move a guy its because they get better. If not they feel like those guys get their best financial offers in a sign and trade and that is where Utah gets something for those guys. Neither is expected to just walk away.
Who would the Rockets have to give up to acquire Josh Smith?
Not as much as you would think… this was the same process they did with Dwight Howard… won’t give tons of assets for a guy they can sign as a free agent in five months or for a guy that could walk away in five months.
Do you forsee any moves by the Thunder for a big man? Anything to get some scoring inside. I’d take JJ Hickson at this point, maybe a swap for Maynor?
Thunder not overly interested in messing with their team. It is working and they are fine. If they do something it will be minor… Eric Maynor or Reggie Jackson
Morning Steve, While i don’t care if Eric Gordon stays or goes. New Orleans definitely needs upgrades at SF & the 2nd unit. Any chance something gets done by 4pm?
Not sure they get it this year… thats what that high draft pick will be used on.
Which team would balk at a deal of Ridnour for Shumpert and filler?
Sounds like new York… Melo went off when Shump’s name was brought up in rumors. Not sure New York goes there.
Can Hornets convince anyone to take Gordon? Any other minor Hornets deals?
Its hard to move him now because he can veto any trade… New Orleans gets control of the situation in July, that is when I think they can trade him especially after he pays more games.
