NCAA countdown: No. 56 Florida Gulf Coast

The First Word: Brett Comer was disheartened.
Mere weeks after Florida Gulf Coast became the darling of the 2013 NCAA tournament — reaching the Sweet 16 as a No. 15 seed and capturing the sports nation with its high-flying Dunk City style — the Eagles’ lob-passing point guard felt heartbreak once again.
The season was long over, but Comer and the rest of his teammates heard the news over the Internet on Comer’s phone that their coach was bolting for a high-paying gig at a major program. FGCU’s coach, Andy Enfield, was taking his coaching talents to Southern California. The news broke before Enfield was able to deliver news of the difficult decision to the team that made him a hot commodity on the coaching scene.
“I was pissed, it sucked,” Comer told USA TODAY Sports last April. “There are no hard feelings. He had to do what was best for him and his family, but we didn’t want to find out that way.”
USC also referenced the Eagles’ Dunk City motto, which didn’t sit well with FGCU players.
“Coach Enfield was the coach, he gave us direction,” Comer said, “but last time I checked the players made Dunk City and beat Georgetown, shocked the world. Last time I checked, most of us are still here.”
Coach’s Corner: 10-year Kansas assistant coach Joe Dooley was hired to replace Enfield, and he couldn’t have inherited a better situation, taking over an FGCU team that returns four starters. More than that, he’s at a program that’s now on the national map following last season’s success. And it doesn’t hurt that Dooley gets to live near the beach in Fort Myers. “I think one of the biggest enticements with the job was the fact that we return a solid nucleus that will be around for the next few years and there’s an opportunity to be highly competitive in our league. I had a very difficult time leaving (Kansas), but the opportunity was tremendous and I’ll get a chance to put my fingerprints on something.”
