The NCAA denied a second appeal by the University of Connecticut that would allow its men’s basketball team to compete in the 2013 NCAA Tournament.

The NCAA’s Committee on Academic Performance’s ruling will leave the 2011 national champions barred from next year’s postseason for failing to meet academic requirements.

Connecticut on Thursday announced its appeal was denied one day after learning of the NCAA’s decision.

“While we as a university and coaching staff clearly should have done a better job academically with our men’s basketball student-athletes in the past, the changes we have implemented have already had a significant impact and have helped us achieve the success we expect in the classroom,” UConn men’s coach Jim Calhoun said in a statement. “We will continue to strive to maintain that success as we move forward.”

The school still has a slim chance to remain eligible. The Committee on Academic Performance will meet later this month and in July to decide whether to change the reporting dates for the years on which the academic criteria is based.
