Nets Officially Fire Avery Johnson

Just 24 days after being named the NBA’s coach of the Month for November, Avery Johnson was relieved of his coaching duties with the Brooklyn Nets in the midst of a 3-10 December.
“The Nets ownership would like to express thanks to Avery for his efforts and to wish him every success in the future,” Brooklyn Nets principal owner Mikhail Prokhorov said in a statement.
Johnson was just 60-116 during his tenure with the Nets, but he took over in the middle of a herculean effort to revitalize the roster and bring the franchise from New Jersey to Brooklyn.
That process began when former majority owner and current minority owner Bruce Ratner purchased the team in 2004. Construction began on Barclays Center in March of 2010 and general manager Billy King spent $330 million of Prokhorov’s money to overhaul the roster.
Despite the additions of players such as Joe Johnson, the offense began to stall after the 11-4 start. Point guard Deron Williams publicly complained about the isolation-heavy system and Avery Johnson echoed that statement before announcing the deletion of “40 percent” of the team’s offense on Monday.
Nets assistant and veteran NBA and college coach P.J. Carlisemo was named the interim coach.
