Nets’ Prokhorov to run for presidency
New Jersey Nets owner Mikhail Prokhorov announced on Monday that he will run against Prime Minister Vladimir Putin in the March presidential election.
Prokhorov, 46, has a strong chance against Putin, who has seen his authority impacted by his party’s poor showing in Russia’s Dec. 4 parliamentary election – as well as allegations of widespread fraud during the balloting.
“The society is waking up,” Prokhorov said at the news conference he held in Moscow to announce his candidacy. “Those authorities who will fail to establish a dialogue with the society will have to go.”
President Dmitry Medvedev promised that the alleged vote fraud will be investigated.
