Knicks’ 13-game streak might be lucky

The New York Knicks are on pace to tie the longest franchise winning streak of 18, should they win out these last five regular-season games.
Why should we care? It appears to be a good omen for this franchise. That team — the 1969-70 Knicks — won the NBA championship.
To get there, they first have to get past the Chicago Bulls, noted streak-breakers, at the United Center Thursday night (8 p.m. ET, TNT).
“They’re a complete team,” Knicks coach Mike Woodson said. “Even though they’re missing a major piece in Derrick Rose, the supporting cast that plays on that team that can play. … They’re a tough matchup not only for us but for a lot of teams in this league. It won’t be no easy game going to Chicago.”
He’s right. Battling the Atlanta Hawks for the fifth seed in the Eastern Conference, the Bulls are 3-0 against the Knicks this season. They’re also the team that ended the Miami Heat’s 27-game winning streak two weeks ago.
The Knicks are at 13, and if they have hopes of coming close to the team record, they’ll have to get by at least three playoff teams: the Bulls, Indiana Pacers and Atlanta Hawks. Oh, and they need to keep winning to hold off the Pacers for the No. 2 seed in the East.
“We wanted the (No.) 1 seed, and we didn’t get that, but we’ll take the (No.) 2 seed. That’s what we’re fighting for,” forward Carmelo Anthony said. “So these next couple of games are definitely big games for us.”
The Knicks success starts with All-Star forward Anthony, who is scoring 28.6 points a game, ahead of the Oklahoma City Thunder’s Kevin Durant (28.3 points per game) for the NBA scoring title. He has scored 50, 40,.41, 36 and 36 in the past five games.
“Melo’s been on a nice run. It’s nice to see. He’s been beautiful to watch all season,” Woodson said. “He’s been trying to do it on both ends of the floor.
