Knicks help out in superstorm Sandy relief

NEW YORK — As New York City and the tri-state metropolitan region recover from the impact of last week’s devastating super storm, the New York Knicks and Madison Square Garden Company continue to assist.
Former Knicks Larry Johnson, John Wallace and Charles Smith, former WNBA New York Liberty players Sue Wicks and Kim Hampton and the Knicks City Dancers volunteered at Staten Island’s Midland Beach on Wednesday to help the American Red Cross, FEMA and NY Cares.
This Friday, MSG Network will host a telethon to raise money for the American Red Cross and The Mayor’s Fund to Advance New York City. The same day, the Knicks will host the Dallas Mavericks and at the game will honor two citizens for what the club says is “their heroic efforts during super storm Sandy” by making a donation to a charity in their names.
The Knicks also donated $500,000 to the Red Cross and Mayor’s Fund.
There had been debate whether to play last Friday’s game against the defending NBA champion Miami Heat at the Garden — a day after the postponed Knicks-Nets game at Brooklyn’s new Barclays Center. But the Garden was nearly a full house.
“We’ve got to be open-minded and try to be helpful if we can to people who are struggling to feed their families and have a roof over their head,” Knicks coach Mike Woodson told news reporters.
